BIM AND FUTURE TECHNOLOGY
BIM- Building Information Modelling is a pin to pin Collection of information of any System
at any point of time. Information is up to date collected and is readily available at any point of
time to everyone associated in that System. BIM helps the System work efficiently,
conveniently and correctly with time.
BIM is a network, connected between a System of Work. For example if we consider Civil
Engineering field as a system; the network will be consisting of Owners, Architects,
Structural Engineers, Contractors, Suppliers, Fabricators, planners, each member in the
system as an equal value and each member’s decision reflects the system development. It is
very important that the system is connected. Here, in the connection BIM plays a vital role.
For example, If there is any change made by an Architect or a Structural Engineer the
information should reach to all the members in the system so that proper rectification can be
made before the execution.
Ex:- BIM LOOP
The Extent of Connecting the network depends on the nature of the project and
requirements of the Project Head. It can be so developed, that the costs of each material
used in the project can be connected to the vendor and if there is any change of price in the
market, the price of any particular material affecting the Budget of the project is brought to
notice to all connected in the network. And further decision can be taken for the alternate
material.
BIM is simple, collect the information and distribute to all in the real time. A lot of references
are available to use and develop BIM. Some are Spreadsheets, XML’s, Sketch, and Cad. It
is left to each professional to adopt and develop his own BIM module or take a help of the
available software’s.
As an example I like to quote how efficiently Singaporeans are utilizing BIM technology for
their development. Using the BIM, they have created complete layout plan of roads, houses,
commercial, institutional establishments etc. Pin to pin detailed information they have
collected; Information collection includes no of persons in the house, no of persons in the
building and their movement. If the new building has to be build in any area of the
Singapore, through BIM the data of the new building to be created is transferred to Mass
Transport Authority, Land Authority and other authorities. So that on the basis of no of
occupancies of the building the authorities can have a check on the Mass Transport
Facilities and other facilities will be sufficient to that area, if not they reconsider the sanction
of the new building.
The modern technology like 3G phones, ipads, and tablets can be used efficiently as a BIM
Tool. With growing technology one can sit in the office and can visualize what is happening
in the site using Google. This helps the engineer or an architect to make a correct decision
of rectification if any required. Also how the conversion of 2D drawings to 3D model will help
the project to continue efficiently.
Future Technology is more interesting and exciting. It is the advancement in the IT industry.
Much higher technology means much sophisticated and more convenient job is possible.
Future Technology is highly dependent on our IT industry. We, civil engineering industry is
dependent on IT industry without I.T life would be much slower when compared to now.
Imagine without Staad Pro, Auto Cadd and other software’s available, how our life with
manual calculation would have led us.
Creating 2D drawings and imagining how it could be at site are going to be obsolete in
future. 3D drawings will make the work easy and without any assumption; it will be possible
to read the drawing accurately and precisely. Further adding animations to that 3D drawing
draws more understanding on the building and also help the building to execute in much
better ways. It also leads to innovative thinking. Since, we have saved the time imagining 2D
to a 3D building, the same time could be utilized to improve the 3D model.
Further it is up to each professional to consider what type of technology he needs to improve
his business and so on. Numerous technologies are available today and it is improving day
to day. Gaming technology like using JAVA, 3D technology, Animation Technology, Video
conversions and it goes on. The movie like AVATAR is a clear example of our technology.
We can see the artificial house, a tree or a layout is created in the film which looks so real.
The same technology could be used to create our building on computer which would help us
to execute efficiently. One day it might come, the robots build at site and we can control the
execution by sitting at office. It is possible and definitely it will be our future technology. But
with the improvisation in the technology rate also increases. This is a short glimpse of our
future technology.
BIM improvises with these technologies. The system works with much more ease and
conveniently resulting growth in the business.
