Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressant derived from the fungus Tolypocladium inflatum. It was discovered in 1970 and found to be an immunosuppressant in 1976. Cyclosporine works by suppressing T-cell function to prevent transplant rejection. It was approved for use in organ transplants in 1983 and for severe psoriasis in 1997. Cyclosporine comes with risks of increased infection and kidney toxicity due to its immunosuppressive effects.
