Natural bast fibers can be used in automobiles to reduce cost, weight, and manufacturing time while improving safety. Bast fibers have been used for thousands of years before synthetic fibers and are a renewable resource grown with little pesticide or herbicide use. European automakers have adopted bast fibers and are expected to use 70,000 metric tons by 2005. For bast fibers to be a viable domestic resource, investment is needed to expand farming and processing in North America.
