What is Vegan Leather and why should we
have them in our closet

Why Vegan Leather?
More than a billion cows, pigs, goats, sheep, alligators, ostriches,
kangaroos, and even dogs and cats are cruelly slaughtered for their skins
every year.
Many of these animals have their tails and horns cut off without painkillers,
and some are even skinned and cut apart while still conscious. Vegan
leather offers a killer look without any killing.
It’s time to make the switch necessary to stop the animal cruelty and of
course, to protect the nature itself too.
Not only does vegan leather make you look good, it also makes
you feel good because it’s cruelty-free.

What Exactly is Vegan Leather
So what exactly is vegan leather? And why should we have that
instead of real leather?
Most vegan leather is made of polyurethane, a polymer that can be
made to order for any designer’s whim. It can sparkle, have a nice
glossy sheen, or be saturated in all kinds of shades that put real
leather to shame.

Pros and Cons Of Vegan Leather
Vegan leather is cruelty free –
no animals are hurt in the
process
There’s been no toxic tanning
process
It is affordable
Vegan leather can be made in
some qualities and colors
leather can’t provide
Vegan leather is essentially
plastic which is a non-
renewable and non-
biodegradable resource.
Synthetic leather such as PVC is
not breathable.
The quality can vary making
vegan leather less durable.
To transform oil into vegan
leather requires chemicals
5
Eco-Friendly Vegan Leather
Up until recently, pretty much all vegan leather was made of
plastic-based materials.
But over the past few years, innovators have discovered many
ways to make vegan leather out of everything from pineapples
to cactus leaves to flowers.
The vegan leather industry has come so far from the days of
good old pleather.

Cactus Leather
Also known as Nopal leather or Desserto, this eco friendly
vegan leather is made from the sun-dried fibres of cactus
plants in Mexican state of the Zacatecas. It’s durable, smooth
and water-resistant.
Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez have developed a
method of transforming cacti into a vegan leather that looks so
realistic, you'd never guess it was made from this desert plant.

Pineapple Leather (Piñatex)
Piñatex is made from waste
parts of the pineapple bush
It is 100% vegan and is also
ethical in the sense that it gives
pineapple farmers yet another
source of income from their
crops.
The fabric feels like thick
cowhide leather, is watertight
and very durable.
*Fun-fact: H&M recently created
a bunch of cowboy boots from
the stuff

Mushroom Leather
Mylo is certified bio-based, meaning it's
made from predominantly renewable
ingredients that can be found in nature.
Soft, supple, and less harmful to the
planet – Mylo is a sustainable alternative
to leather that will become available to
the world.
Fun Fact: Hermès' Victoria bag, its first
vegan-leather luxury bag, is created using
an innovative material made of Fine
Mycelium

Apple Leather
When the apple falls from the tree, I bet
you didn’t expect it to be turned into a
leather bag?
This is a new form of eco friendly vegan
leather; apple waste can make a textile
that is incredibly chic whilst being
cruelty free.
Italian footwear brand Womsh is
working with northern Italian apple
Leather company Fruman to create
vegan footwear that is both ethical and
sartorially on-point.

FAQs about Vegan Leather/Pleather
What does vegan leather smell like?
Vegan leather made of plastic often has chemical-like smell
What does vegan leather look like?
Good quality vegan leather is almost similar to real leather
Is vegan leather good for the environment?
Vegan leather is a huge benefit for animal activists but the manufacturing
process is not eco-friends. Nevertheless plant leather is eco-friendly
Maintaining vegan leather
As it is made of plastic, it easier to clean by using a mild detergent or just by
wiping it with a damp cloth

Switching to Vegan Leather
Planet Earth loves vegan leather, too. Turning skin into leather takes loads
of energy and a toxic brew of chemicals—including mineral salts, coal-tar
derivatives, formaldehyde, oils, dyes, and finishes, some of them cyanide-
based.
Tannery waste contains water-fouling salt, lime sludge, sulfides, acids, and
other pollutants.
So what’s in your closet? Start shedding your skins today with
new and perennial trends.
