A basic pneumatic system uses compressed air to provide linear and rotary motion. It consists of an air production system including a compressor to generate compressed air, as well as an air distribution system including tanks, filters, dryers and pressure regulators to treat and distribute the air. The air is then used in an air consumption system which includes control valves to direct air flow and pneumatic actuators such as cylinders and motors to perform work through linear or rotary motion. Compressed air is advantageous for pneumatic systems due to its availability, simplicity, low cost, reliability and safety.
