Here are the key steps to help someone who is having a burn:
1. Cool the burn with cool (not cold) running water for at least 20 minutes. This stops the burning process and reduces pain and damage. Use whatever is available - tap water, a wet flannel or towel.
2. Remove any clothing or jewellery from the affected area unless they are stuck to the burn.
3. Cover the burn loosely with a sterile non-stick dressing or cling film. This helps protect it from infection.
4. Never apply creams, lotions, ice or break any blisters as this could cause further damage or infection.

- 2. • Recognize basic first aid situations and emergencies • Know the difference between a simple first aid situation and a true emergency (call 911) • Know how to protect yourself and how to ensure personal and resident safety while administering first aid Objectives
- 3. First, survey the area! Remember to use Standard Precautions!
- 4. 1. If the wound is bleeding, apply pressure with a clean cloth or bandage. 2. Gently clean the wound and surrounding area with mild soap. Rinse. Blot dry with a sterile pad or clean dressing. Cuts/Scrapes/Bleeding
- 5. Cuts/Scrapes/Bleeding 3. Cover the wound to absorb fluids and to prevent contamination. (Handle only the edges of sterile pads or dressings.) 4. Secure dressing with first aid tape to prevent dirt and germs from entering.
- 6. • Immobilize the area. Make sure that the broken bone doesn't have to move or support other body parts. • Numb the pain using a towel-covered ice-pack. Fractures/Sprains
- 7. Fractures/Sprains • Use a splint or a sling – A broken finger, for example, can use another finger as a stabilizing splint. A broken arm can be tied with a sling around the shoulder. • Elevate the extremity on a pillow • Call 911
- 8. • Partial-thickness burns can be treated by immersing the burn or by flushing it with cool water (no ice) – Do not use creams, butter or other ointments – Do not pop blisters • Full-thickness burns should be covered with a damp cloth, then call 911 Burns
- 9. If the victim has suffered a blow to the head, look for signs of concussion. Signs include: – Loss of consciousness following the injury – Disorientation or memory impairment – Vertigo – Nausea – Lethargy Signs of a Concussion
- 10. Concussions In the event of a concussion, call 911
- 11. Seizures can be scary for people who are having them for the first time. You can help: – Assist the person down to the floor and make sure they are breathing – Prevent them from hurting themselves – Do not try to open their mouth or place any objects between their teeth – Call 911 Seizures
- 12. All eye injuries are potentially serious. • If something is in the eye, wash the eye with clean water to remove the loose material. • If something is embedded in the eye, do not attempt to remove it. Instead, ask the person to hold a pad over the injured eye and then send them to the hospital. Eye injuries
- 13. • Stay calm • Call 911 and give them as much information about what happened as possible • Assist the individual until help arrives When in Doubt
