Arc welding involves generating heat by striking an electric arc between an electrode and workpiece. The process requires a power supply, welding electrode, workpiece, and welding leads connecting the electrode and workpiece to the power supply. Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), also known as stick welding, is the most widely used arc welding process and can weld most common metals. It involves striking an arc between the electrode and metal to heat it to the melting point, then removing the electrode to allow the molten metal to solidify.
