FIRST EFFECT: To unite the 
baptized with Christ, the Risen Lord. 
This effect is biblically developed in 
two ways: 
1.Through the symbol of water and 
God’s spirit 
2.By sharing in Christ’s baptism of 
His Paschal Mystery

Water- the primary symbol used in 
Baptism 
-The source of all forms of life 
-Symbolizes the HOLY SPIRIT

Such an inherited sinful condition or 
state consists essentially in the 
depravation of sanctifying grace.
OOrriiggiinnaall SSiinn aanndd 
BBaappttiissmm 
Baptism’s sensible sign of washing 
with water symbolizes and effects a 
cleansing from all sin and rebirth to 
new life in the spirit. It is the Holy 
Spirit that frees us from sin.
Incorporation iinnttoo tthhee 
CChhuurrcchh 
SECOND EFFECT: To unite us with 
the other members of Christ’s Body-the 
Church.

The anointing with Chrism signifies 
the baptized sharing the threefold 
mission of Christ: prophetic, 
priestly, and kingly, which Jesus 
performed in His life and teaching.

- The Spirit of Truth, who sets us free 
- The Spirit of Forgiveness, who brings eternal 
salvation to the repentant
