This document contains excerpts from John 3:16-21 discussing God's love for the world and sending his son Jesus not to condemn but to save. It then discusses the three types of Advent: preparation for Jesus' promise of salvation, his ascension to heaven and second coming, and his daily presence in our lives. It provides details on the liturgical meaning and symbols of Advent and how it marks the beginning of the church calendar. It encourages internal reflection during Advent through acts like confession and prayer. The rest discusses the meaning of gifts and how we can gift others with our time, care, and presence as we prepare for Christmas.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

4. 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one
and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall
not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not
send his Son into the world to condemn the world,
but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever
believes in him is not condemned, but whoever
does not believe stands condemned already
because they have not believed in the name of
God’s one and only Son.
5. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world,
but people loved darkness instead of light because
their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil
hates the light, and will not come into the light for
fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But
whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so
that it may be seen plainly that what they have
done has been done in the sight of God.
