INTRODUCTION
TO JATRA

4. In the earlier 20th century a distinct form of
swadeshi Jatra or nationalist traditional
theatre came into being in Bengal. Mahatma
Gandhi's Non Cooperation Movement and the
removal of untouchability were favourite
themes of these, Jatras. The trend has
continued to the post-independence period
where different types of buming social
problems have been powerfully and effectively
treated through this medium.

JATRA INDUSTRY

6. o When compared to other art forms, there is widespread
discrimination, gender and wage disparity, lack of funding
and gross neglect from the authorities.
o There are no training opportunities for Jatra artistes and
thus, there is no scope for further development of their art.
o There are approximately 7,000 professional Jatra artistes
in Bangladesh.
o Most of the time, they are not even paid according to their
agreements.
o According to Tapan Bagchi in Bangladesher Jatra Shilpider
Jiban O Jibika, there sallary in per show is 1000- 4000 tk.

o Lack of proper education of the artists
o Old story, concept, presentation style and lack of modern ideas and
presentation process according to the interest of public.
REASONS We have found some reasons that is why Jatra
has lost its glory. The reasons are :

In this project we want to increase social value about Jatra through women
empowerment. We can use women empowerment as a tool for developing the
condition of Jatra. In past dowry, religious term were the main theme of Jatra.
But in recent days people are not interested in those theme. To cope up with
the recent days, authority should take an initiative for reproduce Jatra.

Every artist must have some quality to work in his or her field.
But in ancient time most of the artists of Jatra don’t have any
educational qualification. For that reason they are not very
conscious about the society. The authority should take steps to
license the qualified people in Jatra.

AND LIMITATIONS
Talk with the jatra artist as much as possible, go outside Dhaka
and visit some jatra-monch around the country, talk with the
authorities that are responsible for the development of the
sector. We can’t talk with any jatra artist directly during the
project paper – that’s the main limitation in our work.
