Why Do We Need Solutions with Ballistic Protection?
"My weapons should only serve to keep borders. To serve peace, not war”

Terrorist threats mean protection needs have evolved
Social & Economic Context
© The Gunnebo Group 5 October, 2017 page 6
Who needs solutions with ballistic protection?
Public and commercial buildings
High demand for protecting of entry areas, solutions that
protect against attacks with weapons (facades, guards)
- embassies, headquarters, parliaments and government
buildings
Industrial and high-risk sites
New European Directives (Seveso III), high technical requirements
for the protection of sensitive places. New buildings (prisons)
- Prisons, Seveso placese
- Fængsler, Seveso-steder
Retail
Fear of terrorism is growing in many places: areas of refuge for
employees and customers, control centers, etc. must be protected

The ”Typical" Design Errors
 A bulletproof solution is described with the classification BRx
With that solution you have a shot-proof window.
There is no certainty that the frame and the glass, when put together, can
withstand an attack relative to the classification desired
Instead, a window part FB6 should be described, as the FB classification covers
both frame and glass - ie the entire installed product.
 A solution has been described with BRxS glass and safety film.
One wants to have the effect of an FB / BRxNS solution, ie no splinter on the
secured side, thus describing a solution with FB / BRBRxS glass and safety film,
as this is cheaper than a BRxNS solution.
This is false peace of mind. Testing at Gunnebo's test facilities has shown that the
first shot will be splinter-free as desired, but already at second shot there are
splints on the inside.

The Kalashnikov has become the best-known weapon of modern times!
100 million AK-47 worldwide (the
most widespread individual weapon
in the world under various models
and manufacturing) (Czech,
Chinese, etc.)
250,000 deaths per year.
"My weapons should only serve to keep borders. To serve peace, not war “ de Mikhaïl
Timofeïevitch Kalachnikov.
Why this weapon is so successful?
The AK47 has become a rustic weapon that can be produced on a large scale for a lower cost.
It is easily dismantled and maintained.
Its use does not require extensive learning, even for less educated users. Robust and
functional, it is not sensitive to external agents such as mud, sand, dust.
• AK-47 became the favorite weapon of terrorists

European Ballistic Standard vs Kalashnikov
 Issue:
 The « AK47 » Kalashnikov weapon is not integrated in the EN 1063 and EN 1522
European standards.
 This weapon is usually used in terrorist attacks.
 Solution :
 Gunnebo & Vetrotech (Saint Gobain) being on top of the security fault, decided to
develop a range of doors, partitions & armored windows.
 The French Laboratory accredited to carry out the ballistic tests in St Etienne has
confirmed that the most virulent ammunition that can easily be found is FMJ/PB/FeC
(PS Ball or MSC: Mild Steel Core), more perforating and also the most
representative of military ammunition.
