This document provides tips and lessons for managing research projects. It outlines the project essentials, including defining what constitutes a completed project, potential barriers to completion, and how to ensure the team has what it needs to finish. Regular status meetings and use of a risk/action issue/interdependency/decision tool are recommended for monitoring progress. Lessons include setting clear expectations, spreading work evenly, documenting as you progress, and celebrating milestones. Potential pitfalls to avoid include scope creep and team members having differing goals or understanding of roles.
The document provides an agenda and overview for an accelerator workshop on rapid facilitation techniques being held by nForm User Experience. The full-day workshop on March 23, 2007 will include presentations and demonstrations of rapid facilitation methods, as well as practice sessions for techniques like live note capturing, predictive PowerPoint, and project alignment exercises. This document discusses managing projects and initiatives using lean and agile principles. It advocates for limiting work in progress, visualizing and measuring flow, prioritizing based on cost of delay, making decisions with uncertainty in mind, and focusing on continuous learning over predetermined destinations or best practices. The overall message is that complex domains with human involvement require an adaptive approach focused on transparency, collaboration, and experimentation over rigid plans.

The document discusses a project to develop a software system called Psyche to help improve the quality of life for people with acute depression. The system would use data from a user's digital diary, questionnaire responses and sensors to try to anticipate depressive periods and alleviate symptoms. An initial configuration table is presented outlining the project vision, key elements, components, scenarios and features. Reviews find that while anticipation works, detection and alleviation measures are inadequate and need improvement to better fit the user's individual context.

Toyota has an eight-step problem solving process called Toyota Business Practices (TBP) that is used to implement the principles of the Toyota Way. The eight steps are: 1) clarify the problem and ideal solution, 2) assess the current situation, 3) prioritize smaller problems, 4) determine the root causes, 5) develop countermeasures, 6) implement the plan, 7) check the results, and 8) standardize successful solutions and spread them to other areas. This structured process uses the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle to continuously improve processes through solving problems.

The document discusses national programs in the Netherlands to upgrade energy efficiency in existing buildings. It outlines the Dutch energy transition plan to achieve sustainable energy by 2050 through seven themes, including energy in the built environment. The target for buildings is energy neutrality for new buildings by 2020 and halving the primary energy demand of the existing building stock by 2030. Key programs discussed are "More With Less" to reduce energy demand in 3 million homes/buildings by 30% and innovation projects to demonstrate 45% energy efficiency improvements in apartment renovations. The biggest challenges are faster adoption of proven innovations and boosting collaboration across the building sector.
The document recommends developing a long-term vision and targets for a sustainable energy supply in the Netherlands by 2050, including firm interim targets for 2030 and 2040. It states that a lack of long-term political vision and inconsistent government policies have hindered progress on the energy transition. Establishing binding long-term targets would provide clarity and direction to help accelerate the transition.

Making Matters, pep talk for HACKDWN v1, Ohio State Dan Rockwell
Dan Rockwell gave a talk at Ohio State University encouraging attendees to pursue their goals and make a difference. He suggested that one should fight for traction in conversations and code every day, while beingware that delusions can be comforting but detached from reality. Rockwell advised attendees to close the gap between aspirations and accomplishments through hustle, and to hold each other accountable.
Dan Rockwell discusses using Japanese animation, or anime, as inspiration for backcasting future technologies and societies. He suggests choosing a future state to envision, then looking back to identify technologies in today's world that could enable that future. Anime often depicts advanced technologies like humanoid robots, augmented reality, and networked digital identities decades before their real-world emergence. Analyzing anime from the perspectives of story, characters, and themes can provide insights into seeds of the future and crucial factors to consider. Rockwell recommends specific anime titles that may inspire ideas for advertising, user interfaces, transportation, and other areas.

This document discusses two techniques for idea generation and validation: backcasting and stream engineering. Backcasting involves envisioning the future and working backwards to define crucial steps. Stream engineering involves observing existing flows or streams and building a model around them. Both techniques are meant to help generate innovative business ideas and concepts. The document provides tips for applying each technique and notes some limitations, such as not explicitly defining business models or potential success.
The document discusses climate change projections from several studies and organizations:
1) It references three emission scenarios from the UKCP09 and AR4 studies that project different trajectories for global emissions.
2) The AVOID study examines impacts of climate change on physical and human systems based on emissions, climate modeling, and economic costs and technologies.
3) Global Futures projections show risks like decreased crop suitability, increased water stress, and greater flooding under various warming scenarios.
4) The Met Office's own projections for temperature increases in Europe and changes to extreme rainfall are also noted.

Abstract: This presentation aims to put strategic design into perspective as a new culture of decision-making. Design strategy is about creating roadmaps and brand experiences that are transcendent and resilient. It is about processes that embark on social engagement as a catalyst for systemic organizational change. It is about systems of products and services that are strategically innovative and holistic. Design strategy is about a mindset, a way of thinking and a set of tools that help businesses, organizations and institutions realize what it is that they should be doing next, how they can do it, and most importantly, why they should be doing it in the first place.
This document outlines the six steps of the planning process: 1) form a collaborative planning team, 2) understand the situation, 3) determine goals and objectives, 4) identify courses of action, 5) prepare, review and approve the plan, and 6) implement and maintain the plan. It provides details on each step, such as ensuring planning teams are small enough to promote good working relationships, identifying threats and hazards, writing measurable objectives, developing courses of action, formatting the plan with sections, and exercising the plan through yearly meetings and site visits. NCET Biz Bite | Project Management Tips and Tools | January 2018Archersan
NCET and Kandis Porter, the Founder and Managing Director of Effective Flow Connections, explains why successful Project Management is critical for delivering optimal business results.
– Did you know organizations are wasting an average of $97 million for every $1 billion invested, due to poor project performance? That is an incredible amount of money that most companies can’t afford to throw away. As organizations are asked to accomplish more with the same or even less resources, effective project management practices are critical.
– Organizations that invest in proven project management practices waste 28 times less money because more of their strategic initiatives are completed successfully.
– It isn’t just the “doers” that need to be well-versed in project management; an actively engaged executive sponsor is the top driver of projects meeting their original goals and business intent.
– Sixty percent of organizations have training on project management tools & techniques; how does your organization measure up?
Attendees will learn about:
– Information on where you can locate definitions for ~200 of the profession’s frequently used terms
– Knowledge of the Project Management Institute’s five process groups and 10 knowledge areas
– A framework for creating a detailed project charter
– Key concepts for project schedule management and using MS Project to stay on track
– Information for tracking and managing Issues, Risks, Actions, and Decisions
– A better understanding of how to capture project Lessons Learned

Understanding User Needs and Satisfying ThemAggregage
https://www.productmanagementtoday.com/frs/26903918/understanding-user-needs-and-satisfying-them
We know we want to create products which our customers find to be valuable. Whether we label it as customer-centric or product-led depends on how long we've been doing product management. There are three challenges we face when doing this. The obvious challenge is figuring out what our users need; the non-obvious challenges are in creating a shared understanding of those needs and in sensing if what we're doing is meeting those needs.
In this webinar, we won't focus on the research methods for discovering user-needs. We will focus on synthesis of the needs we discover, communication and alignment tools, and how we operationalize addressing those needs.
Industry expert Scott Sehlhorst will:
• Introduce a taxonomy for user goals with real world examples
• Present the Onion Diagram, a tool for contextualizing task-level goals
• Illustrate how customer journey maps capture activity-level and task-level goals
• Demonstrate the best approach to selection and prioritization of user-goals to address
• Highlight the crucial benchmarks, observable changes, in ensuring fulfillment of customer needs
