This document discusses two techniques for idea generation and validation: backcasting and stream engineering. Backcasting involves envisioning the future and working backwards to define crucial steps. Stream engineering involves observing existing flows or streams and building a model around them. Both techniques are meant to help generate innovative business ideas and concepts. The document provides tips for applying each technique and notes some limitations, such as not explicitly defining business models or potential success.
How and why we built out the Growth team at Atlassian.
Covers the different phases of building out a growth team and integrating it in to a software company.
BoosterMedia: Overcome the bottleneck of HTML5 mobile game performanceDevGAMM Conference
Making HTML5 games run well on mobile devices is hard work! We’d like to take a good look into this issue by comparing performance on different versions of iOS and Android. Since there are huge differences in their systems, we will look at what the bottlenecks are on the different platforms, and the different versions of each platform. We would also like to show a mini tutorial in profiling games on Android, and seeing where exactly the bottlenecks lie.
IIDEX 2013
Abstract: This presentation aims to put strategic design into perspective as a new culture of decision-making. Design strategy is about creating roadmaps and brand experiences that are transcendent and resilient. It is about processes that embark on social engagement as a catalyst for systemic organizational change. It is about systems of products and services that are strategically innovative and holistic. Design strategy is about a mindset, a way of thinking and a set of tools that help businesses, organizations and institutions realize what it is that they should be doing next, how they can do it, and most importantly, why they should be doing it in the first place.
My IA Summit 2008 Pre-Con on Backcasting for Information Architects. Includes info on conducting the method and using the ORID facilitation framework to support the backcasting method.

Every software team writes code, but some teams produce fewer bugs than others. Every software team creates new features, but some teams develop them faster than others. What do high performance teams do differently, and why are team members more focused, satisfied and relaxed? They truly work together. No 10x rockstar programmer can achieve what a well rounded, enthusiastic team can.
Sven examines how the best software teams set and follow goals, integrate new members fast, ensure diversity, monitor and continually improve team health, embrace transparency, use a playbook to guide them through every phase of development and much more. He shares techniques including: bugfix rotations, OKRs, feature buddies, open demos, focus days and many more that help teams and team members to work more effectively together, and produce awesome results.

Data scientist, or the most dangerous job of the 21st centuryHugo Bowne-Anderson
“Data scientist” has been called the sexiest job of the 21st century but it’s well on its way to becoming the most dangerous: the state of the art is a collection of siloed, ad hoc techniques developed to solve important and interesting challenges without a robust, principled approach. To paraphrase Michael I. Jordan, we are building dangerous, planetary-scale inference-and-decision making systems without a sufficiently stable engineering discipline, just as people built bridges and buildings, many of which fell, before there was civil engineering. In this talk, we’ll delve into how we got where we are today, what types of large-scale systems we’re building in medicine, information technology, finance, transport and society at large, and paths forward.
Talk given at Data Council, NYC.
Crowdsourcing In Der Konsumgüterbranche - Entwicklung Und ÜbersichtYannig Roth
This presentation was given at ISPO's "Open Innovation Wiesn" event in Munich, on September 22nd 2014. The presentation is in English, the talk was given in Englissh too but the title was in German, in front of German innovation and marketing managers. The title means "Crowdsourcing In The FMCG Sector - Development And Overview," elmphasizing that the presentation was not only about the sports sector, but about fast-moving consumer goods to inspire ISPO's attendees.
Traditional retailers are under serious pressure by new online players like Amazon, Zalando and Alibaba. This presentation introduces the concept of hybrid retail, as a way for traditional retailers to effectively build a digital strategy that could really work?
A talk I have at GDEX 2022, the Midwest Gaming conference. The theme this year was art among other things and I did a talk on how AI art tools are changing, everything. This is a space right now largely ignored in biz circles but it is the very foundation of next. I talk about how the empires are rushing to adopt, streamline and infuse AI everywhere in their products, experiences, you name it. Luckily you too can get in on the game and leverage it as well.
This talk covers and shows the trend of ai, artificial intelligence and more.
A talk I have a out of state client on who, what and how to approach the Columbus Ohio startup ecosystem. Just a glance and a tasty of players, playgrounds and opportunities to explore.
Ritual Simplicity - Westerville Web Meetup January 2019 talkDan Rockwell
Note the ritual experience like aspect your product or startup creates for users. Study how rituals create long lasting loyalty to a brand. Here we discuss technology and absinthe and look at the parallels between making user experiences with ritualistic simplicity.
Human Factors meets Augmented and Virtual Reality TalkDan Rockwell
I had the pleasure of giving a talk on the intersect of human factors design and augmented and virtual reality last night to a group of students at Ohio State University. I believe this to be a whole new front and opportunity for the human factors field in the sense that once again innovation is steaming way past "wait is this really usable" once again. Students in this field should embrace this whole new frontier of interaction and be bold, envision and enable the new truth of immersive interactive reality.
A talk I gave recently at the Westerville Web meetup group. Talking about a notion in my head lately about how I need to be a steward of possible for my clients- helping them navigate ideas to market.
My talk for Columbus Startup Week- the army is about what you can do to get your idea going. Its about the vast power of the web- tools, sites, tricks, services you can leveage. Its EVERYONE, ONLINE, SERVICES, OUTSOURCING.
My TCO SHOP prototyping paper kit for app development. First, simply start sketching, then capture the sketches in your phone and use an app like POP to stitch together an app flow- then play, test with users, get a feel for what you're about to realize.

#cmhstartupweek
This deck features a few of my "hive" comic doodles. I've been doodling on startups, tech, trends, vc, biz, dev, themes for 5 years now, another thing I do and rare expose to anyone other than me. Many of these doodles are likely funny only to me and are almost always hinged or connected to a related story or context i was experiencing at that time. The "Hive" is satirical, dark, often negative, and down right bizarre take on the insanity of the whole scene. These little people run companies, attempt to make things and rubberneck on the valley effect of our time.
Some day I will publish a book of them. There are many. (65 or so).
Formula for computing your BS meter is:
who you are + reputation / context - caffeine
---------------------------------------------------
current BS reserves / get to the fucking point X time
that = your current BS reserve level
Now that % level dictates how much you can endure in any given startup could be or would be conversation.
For example, my friend Nick, has a .09% reserve level, his tolerance for total startup bullshit is nearly negative, i mean sure he'll acknowledge your presence but enduring the rabbit hole, not happening. Now BrianZ, has a slightly higher reserve level of 3%, high mostly because he does events like Wakeup Startup, etc, but it fluctuates with work loads.
Five years ago I had bs reserve level of nearly 60%, meaning i was an enduring puppy for startup bs, eager for the prize of wtf'ism and more. Sadly today I'm hovering around 30%, cause you're all potentially my client.
enjoy!
How to talk to developers for your first prototype.Dan Rockwell
How to talk to developers for your first prototype. Talk for Columbus Startup Week #cmhstartupweek
Guts of the talk center around dev vs client mindsets, perspectives, criticals, and mental models on how to approach dev from a stable relationship building perspective that gets you and your developer a win.
My presentation deck for Ohio State's College of Engineering, Human Factors and Ergonomics, ISE5640 Class. One of the class project options is to prototype an app concept, talking with users/stakeholders, iterating on that feedback etc.
My Electronic Wellness Trends talk for the 2013 Health Educators Institute conference at Salt Fork state park, Ohio.
Fun conference, fun talk, great crowd, good times!
A startup health trends, quantified self, and assoicated goodness talk I did for GSW Worldwide in Columbus Ohio. As part of their innovation think tank group and Jump Start program to explore and enable new ideas. Much thanks to the collective inspiration of the trends in play that helped inform and addict me into consuming all possible to talk about it. Special thanks to Rock Health IT and Startup Health who provide many inspiring decks and learning materials to fuel my own research on the subject matter. Also special thanks to Lise Worthen-Chaudhari who inspired me with the quote "movement is the medicine".
Drawing comparisons between baseball and startups. Emphasizing that base hits are just as good as the elusive home run in the startup world. No matter what you do, keep swinging and don't let the strike outs keep you from the game.

9. BACKCASTING TIPS, TRICKS, HACKS
➤ use post its
➤ dream the journey
➤ crux should be heavy weighted, and it can be multiple things, it
should be defined as “good marketing” thats a lame crux, it
should be something substantial in either infrastructure, or
enablement, or technology, or destination, consequence etc
➤ annotate every step of the way
➤ challenge yourself to limit the number of steps, think of each
step as a place that 10,000 things can go wrong
➤ voice, advertise the narrative each step of the way, embody and
shape the experience as you go
10. WHAT BACKCASTING DOESN'T TELL YOU
➤ biz model, pricing, etc
➤ depth of success, or $$$$$ you’ll make, though it can be
implied

19. STREAM ENGINEERING TIPS, TRICKS, HACKS
➤ MUST HAVE A STREAM, today’s streams are: experiences,
data sets / metrics, known markets that exist, definable by
time, output, transactions, occurrences, frequency,
➤ more examples plz: state metrics, policies, regulations (great),
pools of people, buyers and sellers (things and users) that
exist already for a given context, data sets that are collected
and public
➤ best if rapid fire
➤ force yourself to think about how the stream works when you
are asleep
20. WHAT STREAM ENGINEERING DOESN'T TELL YOU
➤ biz model, pricing, etc
➤ depth of success, or $$$$$ you’ll make, though it can be
implied
➤ doesn’t imply value (you imply that)
➤ stream specific
➤ doesn't imply or communicate impact
