How mental health patients were
treated before Freud
Freud’s ideas about mental
illness
When Freud was a young doctor people
with mental illness were treated cruelly
They were locked up and sometimes shaken
to shake out demons
He was the first person to think about mental
health as opposed to physical health
He learnt about hypnotism but rejected it
But he realised the mind was powerful and
could cause mental health problems
Freud on sexual thoughts
 The reason Freud became so famous was because he believed sexual
issues were very important for humans
 People did not talk about sex in those days!
 When Freud talked about repressed unconscious thoughts he often meant
unconscious sexual desires
