extra participation points if you send me one.
CREM Integrated Project Part 1 due date
postponed:
◦ I was wrong about tons of stuff. Sorry!
◦ I’ll give you time to collect data.
◦ I still need to know that you’ve found a statistic to
compare your data to. Still need to get that
approved by me.
◦ Why? Because you are doing a REPLICATION.
Your group today is your research team.
What does participation look like today?
◦ Four possible points!
◦ Up to two points for talking twice in our full
discussion (even if you are reporting back from your
group).

What is genre?
How do we define genre? Conventions!
◦ Ex.: What are some conventions of the textbook genre?
◦ Ex.: What are some conventions of New York Times article?
In groups, look through these “women’s magazines” and
try to identify some conventions that you would expect
to see in other “women’s magazines.”
(Note: we should treat these magazines with respect,
even if they seem frivolous.)
5. Science!
What makes something science? What are key characteristics of science (as per Browne &
Keeley)?
◦ how is science different from journalism?
◦ what kinds of evidence does science care about?
What values do you associate with science? What does science value?
What are the good things that science can do?
What can science NOT do? What is it not good at?
If science can be fabricated, why/when should we believe it? (Joey, Geni)
Myths about science?
What kinds of critiques of science are currently popular in our culture?
◦ HW #6: critique of science.
◦ What article did you bring in? And why?
7. Two types of reasoning
DEDUCTION
From general laws to specific cases.
Guarantees true conclusions IF the premises
are true (the “general laws”).
Ex.: All humans are mortal. Oprah is human.
Therefore, Oprah is mortal.
Ex.: Ex.: People who go with Aaron live. I want
to live. Therefore,
I must go with Aaron
if I want to live.
INDUCTION

INDUCTION
From specific observations to general
conclusions about the world.
No guarantee of true conclusion. Why not?
Ex: I’ve met a lot of smokers who look older
than they are. Therefore, smoking probably
causes wrinkles.
Ex: I’ve noticed that lots of people
who go with Aaron live. Therefore,
I think anyone who goes with Aaron
will live.
