“b” Shaped Model
Introduction
• The “b” shaped model Devised by Birrell
  and Ould.

• The whole of system development life
cycle in this model presented as a vertical
  line and leads to:
 Maintenance cycle at the bottom.

“b” Shaped Model
Introduction (CON’T)
• Each stage of the model is important and
no stage independent of the others.

• Analysts need to be aware of all other
stages in the life cycle and not their part
  of it.

“b” Shaped Model
“b” Phase- Inception
• The “b” model life cycle begin with
  inception.

• This phase represent identification of the
need for a new computer system.

• Inception -> Analysis

“b” Shaped Model
“b” Phase- Analysis.
• The objectives of the Analysis phase are:
     Define the problem.
 Create detailed specification of what
     system have to do?
 To agree with customer about the level of
     service and performance .
 Defining the feasibility study in order to
     commit project resources .
    Analysis -> Design

7 Information System Development : 40201722 (2012-2013)
“b” Shaped Model
“b” Phase- Design.
• The objectives of Design phase are:
 Define the structure and content of system.
 Specify how the system will be
     implemented?
 Within this phase we design :

      Interfaces Dialogues Input Output

     Design -> Production

“b” Shaped Model
“b” Model Phase: Production.
• During this phase :
     Code is created.
     Code is tested.
     Manuals and Documentation published.
 Data from previous system are converted
formally to be used by the new one.
     Training courses designed and
     implemented.
Any testing at this stage is conducted by client to
make sure is it close to what they requested ???
9 Information System Development : 40201722 (2012-2013)
“b” Shaped Model
“b” Model Phase: Operation
• After Completing Development System
  “goes alive”.
• Operation phase started by using the
system in the business which leads for
  system evaluation.
• In this time “Maintenance Cycle” started
by making inception of ideas and
  improvements over the system.

10 Information System Development : 40201722 (2012-2013)
“b” Shaped Model
“b” Shaped Model Advantages
• Flexible by its interaction with system
  requirements.
• More than one change may be moving
through maintenance cycle at the same
  time.
• Possibility in making reverse to the
previous phase if any error occur.
•

11 Information System Development : 40201722 (2012-2013)
“b” Shaped Model
“b” Shaped Model Disadvantages
• Slow in change; for each modification
there are another analysis and design
  phase for new requirements associated
with change which leads for investigation
  and understood again.

• What can we say else ….?????
