Ayurveda and Diabetes Mellitus

Guidelines
• The Dutch General Practitioners Society provides guidelines for the
diagnosis, treatment, and counseling of patients with Diabetes
mellitus type 2 in general practice.
• The aim is to avoid complications, such as cardiovascular diseases,
nephron-, retino- and neuropathy, who determine to a large extent
the quality of the patient's life, prevent or delay and reduce any
complaints.

Guidelines
• The treatment focuses both on the regulation of the blood glucose
values and periodic monitoring of the kidneys, eyes, and feet, and on
measures to favorably influence the cardiovascular risk factors.
• All this requires a structured approach, education and adequate
guidance.
• Diabetes care in general practice provides to a significant extent by
the practice assistant, but the GP is ultimately responsible.

Guidelines
• Within this tight framework I developed Ayurveda protocols to
include in this traject.
• In this webinar I will explain the results of this extended approach
based on my measurements with one of my patients with the
VedaPulse

Type 2 diabetes
• Is a chronic metabolic condition characterized by insulin resistance
(that is, the body's inability to effectively use insulin) and insufficient
pancreatic insulin production, resulting in high blood glucose levels
(hyperglycemia).
• Type 2 diabetes is commonly associated with obesity, physical
inactivity, raised blood pressure, disturbed blood lipid levels and a
tendency to develop thrombosis, and therefore is recognized to have
an increased cardiovascular risk.
• It is associated with long-term microvascular and macrovascular
complications, together with reduced quality of life and life
expectancy.

Guidelines protocol
1. Advice and education about changes in diet and physical activity.
2. Introduction of medicines – Metformine as first choice.
3. Sulfonyurea derivates – Glyclazide adding.
4. Insuline therapy one time a day.
5. Insuline therapy more times a day.

What side effects are possible with this
medication?
• Many medications can cause side effects.
• A side effect is an unwanted response to a medication when it is
taken in normal doses.
• Side effects can be:
• Mild
• Severe
• Temporary
• Permanent

• diarrhea, loss of appetite, metallic
taste in mouth
• nausea, passing of gas, stomach
ache
• vomiting, weight loss
• anxiety, blurred vision, difficulty
concentrating,
• nightmares, restless sleep
• Changes in the acidity of the blood
as a result of lactic acidosis.
Side effects of Glyclazide
• Hypo glycemy, gastrointestinal
complaints
• skin rashes, abdominal pain, back,
muscle, or joint pain
• constipation, diarrhea, dizziness,
headache, blurred vision
• heartburn, increased skin
sensitivity to sun, vomiting,
swelling of the legs,
• anxiousness, nervousness.

There are many different types of
insulin and they are absorbed at
different rates and work for
varying periods of time.
Ayurveda
• In Mohana Choorna, that our
centre developed is an herbal
preparation with some herbs
active in lowering glucose levels,
some are active in widening
blood vessels, some in calming
the mind and some rasayana-
herbs to strengthen the overall
condition. A total of 20 herbs
that works as a team.

That is why Ayurveda can support people
with diabetes.
• Ayurvedic treatment differs from person to person.
• The ayurvedic approach gives hopes to diabetics because there is a
possibility of stopping the medicine entirely or not starting at all!!
• Moreover, other medicines for constipation, drug-induced
hyperacidity, general debility, sleeplessness, etc. are not at all needed.
• Complications such as sudden hypoglycemia or hyperglycaemic
shocks are infrequent.
• Complications of long-standing diabetes are uncommon while the
patient is taking Ayurvedic treatment.
