What leads to obesity?

OBESITY / WEIGHT
MANAGEMENT
Excessive body fat is usually accumulated on the belly, buttocks, breasts and
thighs. While a sedentary lifestyle is the main reason for this, obesity is the
most common cause of several modern-day illnesses which could lead to
diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, cardiac diseases, alleviated lipid profiles,
kidney and liver disorders.
According to Ayurveda, obesity is a 'Kapha' disorder called Medoroga (a
disease of fatty tissues). When Kapha reaches abnormal levels, hampering
the body's fat metabolism in the process, it leads to obesity.
Treatment Pedagogy:
Few dietary changes and lifestyle modifications. Losing weight
and increasing physical activity can help reduce the chance of
getting diabetes and help to control it. So the first thing is to under-
stand the type of food you should be choosing according to your
prakriti (bio-energy) and according to the effect of a particular food
on your blood glucose levels (called Glycemic Index). Our
Ayurvedic doctors guide you on this aspect.
It is appropriate to include certain common herbs like Karela
seeds, Jamun (seeds), etc. in you daily meal plan. As such, after
ascertaining your dominant bio-energy, eating pattern and history
of the ailment, a weekly diet plan is prepared. If you are overweight
then you are advised to lose it and monitor it more closely.
Getting diabetes at any stage puts a lot of stress due to the dietary
restriction and continuous medication (or insulin shots) and know-
ing about the possible consequences of the disease. Our yoga

DIABETES
Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or
properly use insulin - a hormone needed to convert sugar, starches
into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues
to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors
such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play vital roles.
The early symptoms of diabetes include weakness and tiredness,
weight loss, excessive urination, excessive hunger and excessive
thirst. Further there could be delayed healing of wounds, itching
and fungal infections. If untreated the condition may affect the
eyes, kidneys, nerves, and the arteries which in turn lead to
various disorders. Uncontrolled diabetes may lead to medical
emergency called diabetic keto-acidosis.

Treatment Pedagogy
rVita offers two kinds of therapies – One is the Yoga and Breath
Therapy. Second being a Dosha based approach.
Improving your lifestyle by adoption of ethical elements mentioned in
'Achara Rasayana' is must if you really want to stay away from mental
and physical stress and from eventual hypertension. It is certain that
stress can cause hypertension. Anxiety, secondary to acute stage can
cause rise in your blood pressure. Relaxation and removal of stress
will help to lower mildly elevated levels of blood pressure.
Yoga and Breath Therapy
Research has now shown that regular practice of Yoga and Breath
Therapy controls high blood pressure. Panchakarma: (Ayurveda
detoxification therapy) Niruha basti Chikitsa: (non unctuous enema)
will be beneficial in hypertension and should be given by experienced
physician. Dhara therapy is also helpful in treating obstinate cases of
hypertension. Oil processed with bala (sida cordifolia) and milk is
allowed to drop in small droplets on the forehead of the patient.

Concerns of high cholesterol
An excess of cholesterol can build up in the bloodstream and accumulate on the walls of
arteries. This build up is what can lead to clogged arteries and eventually to heart attacks and
strokes. In fact excess cholesterol increases the risk of getting heart diseases and strokes.
Cholesterol can be "bad" and "good". The "bad" cholesterol or Low-Density Lipoprotein
(LDL) can clog your arteries while studies show that "good" cholesterol or High-Density
Lipoprotein (HDL) can actually reduce your risk of heart disease. That's why it's essential for
you to know the facts about fats, foods and other means which can reduce bad cholesterol
in your blood.

CHOLESTEROL
Cholesterol is a sterol (a combination steroid and alcohol) and a lipid found in the cell
membranes of all body tissues and transported in the blood plasma of all animals.
Cholesterol is present in higher concentrations in tissues which either produce more or
have more densely-packed membranes, like the liver, spinal cord and brain.
Cholesterol plays a central role in many biochemical processes, but is best known for
the association of cardiovascular diseases with various lipoprotein cholesterol
transport patterns and high levels of cholesterol in the blood.
Cholesterol is required to build and maintain cell membranes; it makes the
membrane's fluidity and degree of viscosity. Cholesterol also aids in the manufacture
of bile and is also important for the metabolism of fat soluble vitamins, including
vitamins A, D, E and K. It is the major precursor for the synthesis of vitamin D, of the
various steroid hormones, including cortisol and aldosterone in the adrenal glands,
and of the sex hormones progesterone, oestrogen, and testosterone. Further recent
researches show that cholesterol has an important role for the brain synapses as well
as in the immune system, including protecting against cancer.

Treatment Pedagogy

Therapies
Abhyangam
A Complete body oil application with choice of medicated oils suited for
your constitution. It is recommended for Muscle-skeletal health. This
therapy helps tone muscles & removes fatigue, making your body agile.
Abhyangam with Navarakizhi: Tapping blouses of special, medicated
rice, known as ‘Navara', all over the body after dipping it in hot milk or
herbal decoction, this nourishing fomentation therapy helps improve blood
circulation and prevents degeneration of muscles and bones. It relieves
muscular fatigue and strengthens muscles.
Abhyangam with Pichu: Cotton pad soaked in medicated oil is placed on
a specific affected body part, kept moist with warm oil for a specified
duration of time. This therapy helps in reducing inflammation, pain and
cramps.
Abhyangam with pizhichil: Involves continuous pouring of warm
medicated oil on the specific affected part alone. Effective in skeletal and
muscular diseases, cervical spondylitis, osteoarthritis, lumbago, sciatica
and neuropathy.

Shiro Abhyangam: This medicated oil treatment is effective when it comes to

Treatment Pedagogy
Mukha Lepa: Application of exotic, customized herbal powders mixed with water, milk or
sesame oil on the face with gentle rubbing revitalizes the facial skin, clears the blemishes
and removes dead skin.
Ksheeradhara: Continuous pouring of a mixture of milk, Turmeric and White Sandal all
over the body followed by a gentle massage helps tone the skin and endows it with a
healthy glow. As the mixture is an effective moisturizing agent, this therapy leaves your
skin soft and supple.
Shiro-abhyangam: Continuous pouring and massage of the head with a blend of
medicated oils. This therapy helps strengthen the hair roots and helps prevent fair loss
and premature graying
PREVENTIVE THERAPIES
Abhyangam (45 minutes): The application of medicated oil on the head and body
promotes strength, sleep, growth, and firmness of hair. It improves blood circulation, the
skin, and complexion. A three-minute steam and a warm water shower with a herbal
scrub follow this.
Dinacharya (45 minutes): This is a unique lifestyle therapy, which aims at ageing
gracefully. The program includes an oil application and a cleansing therapy for the five
sense organs – Anjana (for eyes), Nasya (for nose), Karnapoorana (for ears), Kavalam
(for mouth) and Dantdhavanan (for oral cavity). The experience gives a unique feeling of

Udwarthanam: A special therapy for reducing body fat, and improving the tone of
muscles and health of skin. This involves a massage with medicated oil and a herbal
powder called ‘thriphala’, a unique mixture of three Ayurveda ingredients. This can be

Mukhalepam: Mukhalepam is ideal for removing wrinkles and discoloration, and to make
skin soft and smooth. This is a herbal facial which begins with a face massage with a

Gandoosha: Gargling lasts five minutes using different kinds of liquids (depending on

Danta Dhavana: Five minutes of teeth cleaning with a herbal powder to prevent
infections.
Anjana: Lining the rims of the eye with an anti-infection paste for 5 minutes. This
improves eyesight and delays cataract formation.
Karnapoorna: Pouring of 2-4 drops of medicated oil in each ear for five minutes. It
protects the ears from infection.

Snana: A bath with herbal powders is administered at the end of

Kati Vasti: Warmed and spicy Indian oils are used to massage
