Hagia Sophia was originally built as an Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Istanbul, Turkey, serving in that capacity until 1453, when it was converted to a mosque for nearly 500 years. It then became a museum in 1935. Known also as Holy Wisdom, the building was constructed remarkably quickly for its time between 532-537 AD and featured a massive central dome that made it one of the largest cathedrals in the world for almost 1000 years. It has significance as one of the oldest cathedral structures in existence, demonstrating the architectural achievements of the Byzantine Empire.
