useful ideas, is the seed of innovation but unless it’s applied and scaled it’s still just an idea."
David Burkus
"An innovation is a feasible relevant offering such as a product, service, process or experience with a
viable business model that is perceived as new and is adopted by customers." Gijs van Wulfen
"The implementation of creative ideas in order to generate value, usually through increased
revenues, reduced costs or both." Jeffrey Baumgartner

Project Focus (Group)
The term sustainability is refers to four distinct areas: human, social, economic and
environmental – known as the four pillars of sustainability.
Human sustainability aims to maintain and improve the human capital in society.
Investments in the health and education systems, access to services, nutrition,
knowledge and skills are all programs under the umbrella of human sustainability.
Social sustainability aims to preserve social capital by investing and creating
services that constitute the framework of our society. It means to preserve future
generations and to acknowledge that what we do can have an impact on others and
on the world. Examples are Childcare, Education, Inclusion, Community Outreach,
Poverty alleviation, Senior care, Healthcare, Sport, Diversity in the workplace etc
Economic sustainability aims to maintain the capital intact. It refers to the efficient
use of assets to maintain company profitability over time. A more recent approach to
economics acknowledges the limited incorporation of the ecological and social
components in this model. New economics is inclusive of natural capital (ecological
systems) and social capital (relationships amongst people).
Environmental sustainability aims to improve human welfare through the protection
of natural capital (e.g. land, air, water, minerals etc.). Initiatives and programs are
defined as environmentally sustainable when they ensure that the needs of the
population are met without the risk of compromising the needs of future generations.
Examples are switch to renewable energy and reduce CO2 via green technology,
promote reclycing, implement digital transformation, improve processes and design
cycle by switching to innovative technologies/using environmentally friendly materials,
plant and preserve trees and forests (oxygen producing).
If a company is focusing only on profit (the economic side), it’s not sustainable because
the environment, society, and the people will sooner or later present the bill.

Page 9 of 23 Last update: 14 Oct 2022
Sustainable development is the sweet spot where human, social, environmental, and
economic needs can be satisfied all at the same time without neglecting one other.
For example, a business is sustainable when is:
• Profitable and growing
• Cares about its employees by paying reasonable salaries, offering benefits and
education
• Cares about the local community and society at large by supporting local
charities
• Respecting the environment thanks to sustainable product design and green
technologies
This is because sustainable development is at the intersection of the human, social,
economic, and environmental types of sustainability.
