Mobile media module part 6 - app development rev-mfMichelle Ferrier
The Mobile Media Module is designed as a two-week, broad-based study on the mobile landscape that can be applied in many courses.
The program was implemented at Ohio University’s Scripps College of Communication to support our Scripps Innovation Challenge and to build knowledge of the mobile landscape across our communication curricula.
For implementation, we brought in an expert in mobile development to teach in four existing classes over two weeks in Spring 2013. Faculty teaching those classes became the students and built their capacity to teach the material in subsequent semesters.
By “hacking the curriculum” using the “module method,” we were able to reach more than 500 students in one semester with new material.
For more information, contact Dr. Michelle Ferrier, associate dean for innovation, Scripps College of Communication, ferrierm@ohio.edu.

In your organization, you frequently need to train others on how things are done. Whether it's for customers or new employees, there is information you know that they will benefit from.
Almost every organization offers some form of training or classes or seminars to employees (and sometimes to customers) but very few are succeeding in getting those “students” to learn. In this workshop, we will explore the use of technology and E-Learning environments to improve the actual knowledge transfer in your organization.
Much of today's learning can take place on-line in organized, downloadable segments and we'll show you the best way to create and deliver your important content using technology. We'll also discuss on-demand reference systems and the types of information that is best made available from a webpage or smartphone instead of asking people to memorize it. No more wasting time with on-the-job training or day-long classes that are not effective.
Here are some of the topics that will be covered:
• How to design courses so that learning really takes place
• What kinds of knowledge or information is best taught and what is best made available from a Wiki or other reference system?
• Tools for “recording” PowerPoint presentations (and other applications) so that others can learn on their own time
• The use of new media (video and audio) in your e-learning courseware
• Learning Management Systems and keeping track of learner’s progress
Supporting the Acquisition of 21st Century Skills through Multimodal Learning...Xavier Ochoa
Collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving are among the skills that are needed to study and work in this 21st century. As important as they are, evaluating, assessing and teaching them in a practical, scalable and efficient way is still a challenge not fully met by current pedagogical-technological practices. Multimodal Learning Analytics (MmLA), the processing and analysis of multiple sources of data to better understand and improve learning processes, has been posed as a possible solution to augment the natural capabilities of both instructors and students to provide and receive feedback to support the development of those skills. During this session, we will explore the affordances that low-cost sensors and current advances in artificial intelligence provide to automatically record and analyze face-to-face, complex learning processes as those involved for the development of 21st-Century Skills. Finally, we will discuss and ideate practical MmLA tools that could be built to augment your current teaching and learning practices.

Education as the meta-problem: Opportunities for Technology R&DXavier Ochoa
Keynote at ECTM 2016: The massification of education at the start of the industrial revolution created an efficient but less effective learning process compared to one-to-one tutoring. The information age has only increased the pressure on the educational system and revealed its shortcomings. However, the same technological advancement can also help the system to be not only more efficient but even more effective than before. During this talk, the impact that applied research in a large array of technological fields (from AI to IoT) could have in understanding and improving the learning process will be discussed.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
