The term "talking book" originated in the 1930s with government programs created for blind readers, which established the "Talking Books Program". In the 1970s, the term "audiobook" came into use as audiocassettes replaced record players. Audiobooks are available in many formats including records, cassette tapes, CDs, MP3s, and downloadable digital files, and are preloaded on hardware devices. They provide benefits such as increased comprehension, independence, and improved language and vocabulary skills which make them useful for blind individuals as well as second-language learners, those with learning disabilities, and struggling readers.
