Who do I think the audience is
for my chosen song/artist?
THE 1975.
From looking at the 1975’s fan pages/you tube comments and
Facebook followers, I can infer that the band’s primary audience is
teenage females.
The song ‘girls’ especially has caught the attention of girls due to its
name.
As I wanted to ensure that my predictions were accurate, I produced a
questionnaire evolved around the publics interest and consumption of
music videos. This enabled me to learn what is most valued when
watching music videos and why, so that I can make a music video that
appeals to my intended audience.
The questionnaire allowed people to say how, why and what music
videos they like.
Also, I showed them the song ‘girls’, which enabled me to see what
their interpretations of the song was. This guided me greatly in the
production of the music video and gave me ideas for some links
between the lyrics and visuals.
The questionnaire:
What I found out:
Within my questionnaire investigation, I found out:
• People between the aged of 16-24 years watch 50+ music
videos a month.
• The main way people watch music videos is via YouTube.
• As a whole, most people put that all of these factors play
an important part in the role of a music video: promotion of
the music video; The entertainment factor for the audience
and the portrayal of the songs message/moral.
• The main attractions of music videos within this age range
is that they like the artist or they were told by a friend to
watch it.
• The relationship between the music and visuals was rated
the most important feature of a music video.
• People felt that the song ‘Girls’ had a deeper,
complicated message, however, the lyrics weren’t clear to
them and this could have been done deliberately.
The magazine audience:
Clash magazines press/media pack states
that 37% of their readership is people
between the ages of 21 and 25. In addition,
another 34 are aged 26 to 30.
The press pack says that 52% of their
readership in males, making the audience
men. This contrasts with the audience of The
1975, however, by the appearance of the
band in Clash more than once, could suggest
that the band is seeking to broaden their
audience. Although, there is only a subtle
difference in percentages between men and
women, therefore it can be seen as a unisex
magazine.
The audience of Clash magazine are
described as being fond the users with a
passion for music. Additionally, the target
audience is primarily located in the UK,
with over 40% situated in London.
