Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Gender
As a whole we decided that our production related to females more
dominantly than males. This was definite as there is a female lead in
the music video, and the narrative is on the search for her belonging
and self after what assumes to be a breakup, that more of a female
audience can and will relate to the production; mainly because the
majority of the viewers have most probably experienced this in their
adolescent years. Not only can they relate but, as a female myself –
stereotypically- I appeal to the demographic of our music video; by
using bright colours and unique editing choices our video is colourful
and more attractive for a female audience.
3. Age
For many reason our music video is aimed towards the ages of 18-21 years
old. Not only is this because this is the average age of my production
group but I believe that, the narrative within the production aims more
towards the adolescent age. At this age, teenagers/young adults are
exploring their self and how they can overcome problems. This is
represented by an young girl as an actor, as if to represent many
others journey that they can specifically relate to.
4. Class / Status
Our music video will be aimed at a middle-class audience, this is highly
reflected in our character choice, and locations that we have visited;
for example, the library and also the museum that the female lead
visits on her journey. This is because these locations are usually
associated with educational purposes and also the exploration that
individuals go through. Although, I do not believe that our production
cancels out any other social class/status as these connotations are not
specifically used to approach this group, but more as a varied
response.
