OUR PRECIOUS ATMOSPHERE
ATMOSPHERIC LAYERS
GEOGRAPHY
MUDAU UNARINE
WHAT IS THE ATMOSPHERE?
• The earth’s atmosphere is the gaseous envelope that surrounds the
earth that is retained by gravitational attraction
THE ATMOSPHERE
THE ATMOSPHERE CONSISTS OF A UNIFORM MIXTURE OF GASES SUCH AS WATER
VAPOR, NITROGEN, OXYGEN (21%), CARBON DIOXIDE (0,04%), ARGON
FURTHERMORE TRACE GASES SUCH AS NEON, HELIUM, METHANE, XENON,
HYDROGEN AND MOST IMPORTANTLY OZONE and microscopic particles
THE ATMOSPHERE SUSTAINS THE LIFE ON EARTH,WHICHT IS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT
IN ADDITION THE ATMOSPHERE HAS LAYERS, THINK OF AN ONION
THE 5 LAYERS OF THE ATMOSPHERE
TROPOSPHERE (0-10 KM)
STRATOSPHERE (10-30 KM)
MESOSPHERE (30-50 KM)
THERMOSPHERE (50-400 KM)
EXOSPHERE (>400 KM)
TROPOSPHERE VERSUS STRATOSPHERE
2. STRATOSPHERE IS THE SECOND LAYER
AFTER THE TROPOSPHERE, WHERE
TEMPERATURE INCREASES WITH ALTITUDE
THIS LAYER CONTAINS OZONE A TRACE GAS,
WHICH FORMS THE OZONE LAYER THAT
SHIELDS LIFE ON EARTH FROM HARMFUL
UV RAYS, lastly there are jet streams which are
masses of winds
• 1. TROPOSPHERE IS THE FIRST, thinnest
(the part we live in) LAYER THAT IS
CLOSEST TO EARTH SURFACE, ALL THE
WEATHER ACTIVITIES OCCUR HERE.
• HERE TEMPERATURE DECREASES WITH
ALTITUDE, MEANING THE HIGHER YOU
GO THE COLDER IT BECOMES.
MESOSPHERE VERSUS THERMOSPHERE
3. MESOSPHERE IS THE THIRD LAYER,
HERE TEMPERATURE DECREASES
WITH ALTITUDE, MAKING THIS LAYER
THE COLDEST ATMOSPHERIC LAYER
. METEORS MAY BURN HERE
• 4. THERMOSPHERE, WHERE
TEMPERATURE INCREASES WITH
ALTITUDE MAKING THIS LAYER THE
HOTTEST ATMOSPHERIC LAYER
• THE IONOSPHERE ( the layer with
electrically charged iron particles ) WHICH
CAUSES AURORAS WHICH ARE
BEAUTIFUL GLOWING LIGHTS IS FOUND
IN THIS LAYER.
EXOSPHERE
• 5. EXOSPHERE THIS LAYER IS THE
OUTERMOST LAYER (SPACE), HERE
TEMPERATURE INCREASES WITH
ALTITUDE also traces of helium and
hydrogen are found in this layer
• THIS IS WHERE WE FIND SATELLITES
CONCLUSION
• The Earth’s atmosphere is precious because
it helps protect and sustain life on Earth,
without the atmosphere life on Earth was
certainly not going to survive let alone exist
