The Physical Science Study Committee (PSSC) was formed in 1956 by a group of university and secondary school physics teachers to develop an improved introductory high school physics course. The PSSC organized teams of teachers to create instructional materials including a textbook, films, labs, and tests. These materials were tested in classrooms for 3 years before being finalized. The goal of the PSSC course was to present a modern view of physics and encourage scientific inquiry in students.

Chem study originated in 1960 at United States J.A Campbell was the project Director.
Chem Study employs inductive approach in which practical work precedes theory. The
main objectives of the course are
1) To diminish the separation between Scientist and teachers in the understanding of
Science.
2) To stimulate and prepare those high school students who planned to continue the
study of Chemistry in College in preparation for a professional career.
The materials produced under this project consists of a text, laboratory manual ,
teachers guide, two self instruction programmes two series of achievement tests,
26 basic films and 27 teacher training films.
Chemical Bond Approach (CBA)
CBA course was originated in 1959. Lawrence Strong was the founder of this
project. In CBA theory precedes practical work, ie, it is deductive in approach.
Important texts are Chemical system and investigating Chemical system. The concept of
bonding forms the central theme in C.B.A. The whole course is planned in such a
manner that experiments suggest the ideas to be tested and ideas to be tested suggest the
experiments to be setup.

Facts: P hysics gives all the "how's" in a world of "what's." It is a science of matter and its

Observation: Act of monitoring or observing something or someone. Observed

Physical Quantity: In physics, there are seven fundamental physical quantities that
are measured in base or physical fundamental units: length, mass, time, electric
current temperature, amount of substance, and luminous intensity. Units for other
physical quantities (such as force, speed, and electric charge) described by
mathematically combining these seven base units.
ISSUES OF TEACHING PHYSICS
Some issues in the field of physics education includes the availability of appropriate
textbooks and classroom resources, the preparation and training of physics teachers
Difficult to learn: This may be one of the major problems in
teaching physics. There seems to be an inherent idea held within
society that science in general is difficult to learn. The students
with this attitude make it harder for them to concentrate and
actually love studying the subject. This in turn hinders some of the
subject teachers to lose their interest in teaching the students.
Poor mathematical knowledge: With physics being an applied
mathematics, it will be tough and challenging for weak
mathematics background students, leading to lose of interest and
ultimately may discontinuing with the subject in higher studies.
Abstract Ideas: With students varied ability to deal with
abstraction of ideas, teachers may have to start the session
from scratch as physics require

The study was focused on Physics teachers’ perception on the use of ethnoscience learning experiences for the teaching of secondary school Physics and its implication for curriculum implementation. Six research questions and six hypotheses were posited for the study. The cross sectional survey research design was employed for the study. 243 secondary school Physics teachers in three Urban Local Government Areas Port Harcourt, Obio Akpor and Eleme and four rural Local Government Areas Ikwerre, Khana, Ahoada East and Ahoada West in Rivers State, Nigeria were selected using the non proportional stratified random sampling technique. Data collecting instrument was titled “Ethnoscience Learning Experience for Physics Teaching Questionnaire” with a coefficient reliability index of 0.86 was used to elicit response from the respondents. Data was analyzed using frequency count, mean, and inferential statics of t test at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that the following themes Interaction of Matter, Space and Time, Conservative Principle, Waves Motion without material transfer and Fields at rest and in motion can be taught using ethnoscience learning experiences while themes such as Energy quantization and duality of matter and Physics in technology cannot be taught using ethnoscience learning experiences. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that stakeholders and planners of the secondary school Physics curriculum should consider the integration of ethnoscience learning experiences in the Physics curriculum in order to clarify those abstract concepts in learning of Physics. The physical science study committee was formed in 1956 as a
group of university and secondary school physics teachers working to develop an improved
introductory physics course. The committee is developing interrelated teaching material for
physics in the secondary school. Materials intended for direct instructional use include a
textbook, laboratory apparatus and a laboratory guidebook for students, motion picture films, and
a set of ten achievement tests. Supporting materials include a 4 volume teachers guide and
resource book, and a series of paperback book that provide authoritative science literature for
students and adults
To help teachers who are considering the use of these materials, the committee has encouraged
the development of instructional programs that enable teachers to study the new course in detail.
For its various activities, the committee organized team of university and secondary school
teachers. These teams blended teaching experience at several levels with deep insight in to the
nature and meaning of physics. The material developed by these teams were used in classes and
subjected to close scrutiny by the teachers who used them and by the committee’s staff
observers. The course materials were tried evaluated, and revised for 3 years before they were
released for general use in the fall of 1960.
AIM
1. To present a view of modern physics to the student.

a course involving scientific inquiry on the part of the students, equally
important, that the student see physics as an unfinished and continuing
activity.
