2. Analyze the Learner
General: 3rd grade, 18 students (7 boys, 11 girls), 10 Caucasian, 4 African-Americans, 2
Latino, and 2 Asian.
Learning Competencies: Students should have a basic understanding of what an animal is
and types of animals.
Learning Styles: Many of the students are visual learners, while others are tactile-
kinesthetic learners. Very few of the students are auditory learners.
3. Objective
The students will be able to identify what a mammal is, characteristics of
mammals, and the types of mammals by watching videos, observing pictures,
through drawing, and by observing presentations. By the end of the week 90% of
the students will be able to identify types mammals.
4. Day by Day
1. Show students the YouTube video “What are Mammals?” Go over with students the characteristics of mammals
by going to the San Diego Zoo website and showing students pictures of different mammals.
2. Explain mammals are divided into groups. With a PowerPoint presentation go over the characteristics of the
mammal group carnivores. Have the students draw a picture of their favorite carnivores.
3. Using flip charts and images explain to the classroom the mammal group called Cetaceans (marine mammals).
Show students the video “Blue Whale Nursery Rhyme.” Have the students pick their favorite mammal from this
group and look up interesting facts about it and share with the class.
4. Show students the video “Animals with Pouches” to explain the mammals group marsupials. For that school
day, give the students a small stuffed animal and a small apron, so students can experience taking care of
babies within a pouch.
5. Explain to the students what the mammals group primates is by showing them a PowerPoint presentation
giving characteristics about primates. Then have the students have a reflection on what they learned from the
PowerPoint and let them draw their favorite primate.
5. Use of Technology
Computer and projector to use for presentations and viewing videos.
Art supplies so students can draw their favorite mammals.
Flip charts and images to show students pictures of mammals.
Aprons and stuffed animals for students to participate in the marsupial activity.
