Unit Plan: You Are What You Eat
Analyze Learners
 The unit is for an 8th grade Health class and is geared
toward the average learner. The students range in age
from 13 to 15 years. 7 students in the class have mild
ADHD. The class consists of 10 boys, 7 girls, 70% white,
20% African-American and 10% Latino. Generally, the
students are well-behaved when the lesson integrates
project-based learning activities that focus on topics of
interest.
State Objectives
 Each student will know the five food groups and associate foods
with each food group with 90% accuracy by writing in the correct
foods in the correct food group on the smartboard.
 Each student will match benefits and risks of foods within each food
group with 90% accuracy by matching flashcards.
 Each student will distinguish the relationship between diseases and
food with 90% accuracy by matching flashcards.
 Students will showcase their understanding of a healthy well-
balanced meal and the specific benefits that specific foods have
on the body with 90% accuracy by presenting in front of the class
and in front of another class via Skype.

Utilize Media and Materials
 The unit poster will be used to guide the class in a classroom
discussion that will activate prior knowledge
 YouTube will be used as to show the “Be Healthy” and the
storytelling video and will be used as motivators to get students
excited about the lesson.
 The smartboard will be used to display the videos and to categorize
food into food groups.
 QR codes will be used to navigate each group to online
applications and websites.
 Voki will help steer their research in the right direction by giving hints
and tips on some foods.
Utilize Media and Materials
 Podcast will give hints and tip on foods for research.
 Twitter will be used in providing links and hints that will help with
research.
 Facebook will be used in providing links and hints that will help with
research.
 Pinterest will be used to guide students and give them ideas in
constructing unique healthy well-balanced meals.
 Skype will be used for each group to showcase the meals they created
and the specific benefits that each meal has on the body to another
class in a different state and region. The students will compare and
contrast their meals to each group’s and ultimately learn from one
another via Skype.
Require Learner Participation
 All students must participate in the classroom discussions,
the watching and discussing of videos, the qr code
discoveries, group research, and group presentations.
The unit consists mainly of group activities that require
participation from every member of the group.
Evaluate and Revise
 Grouping, especially, will be evaluated. If certain
students do not behave well with one another, changes
in groups will be made. If all members of the group are
not participating I will require certain assignments and
responsibilities for each member. I will evaluate all
techniques used and the effect they have on students.
Revisions will be made if necessary.
