Using the ASSURE method, I will be teaching activities of the fourth of July to Russian students
that just arrived to the United States (they do speak English) , ages 10 to 19, 15 in total ….8
males and 7 females. They are all vision impaired.
A(nalyze learners)- I have the information needed about my students like their age,
gender, and culture. I do not know their learning styles yet as to they have just arrived. When it
comes to specific entry competencies, I probably would assume that they do not know much
about this topic. To see if I am correct and to gauge how much they know I will give them each a
small quiz that doesn't count for anything. If their vision is impaired to the point where they can’t
even read the paper, the quiz will be given orally.
S(tate objectives)- The objectives of this lesson is for these kids to be able to describe and
list all the things that they have learned about American culture and activities when it comes to
the fourth of July. When being quizzed, they have to be able to answer the questions well enough
to get at least and 80% on the quiz. They will also divide into groups and work together on
making a poster about how the Fourth of July is similar and different from Russia Day.
S(electing the 3 M’s)- My method for teaching will be to orally describe activities of the
fourth of July. The kids, if they choose and are able to, can take notes on what I say. I will also
have information of the Russian independence to help them relate what they are learning to what
they knew about Russian history before coming the the U.S. If the kids would like me to, I can
record my lecture and either post in online or give it to them through email (I would have them
create and email if they did not already have one) so that they could listen to the lecture again
while studying for the quiz.
U(tilize media and materials)- I will utilize my media and materials by having them
access a email account and by sending them the audio lesson. I will also use sound clips of
fireworks (if any student had never heard them before).
R(equire learner participation)- I will use the learning theories taught to me by Professor
Blanco and apply them into my classroom. I understand that every student learns differently so I
will encourage them to stop me during the lecture if they would like me to explain things again
or they could see me after class for extra help. They will also participate in the group activity.
E(valuate and Revise)- I will take the criticism and opinions of the class and adapt to a
learning style that will help them be able to retain knowledge better than my original way. For
extra feedback, I would like to have another teacher sit in on my lesson to give me pointers on
what they thing could've helped. I will take this feedback and if I think it will indeed help the
students, I will go over it with them that way the next day before the quiz.
