2. ASEPTIC TECHNIQUE
Aseptic technique is the term used for all procedures
and techniques performed to keep a sterile product
from becoming contaminated
Programs designed to ensure the aseptic
preparation of
sterile products.
Aseptic technique is a means of manipulating
sterile products without contaminating them.
3. INTRAVENOUS ADDITIVE
PROGRAM
• an IV additive program consists of
policies and procedures for both the preparation and
administration of intravenous fluids to which drugs are
to be added under aseptic conditions.
4. INTRAVENOUS ADDITIVE SERVICES
• Is the part of intravenous additive program
• It refers only to the preparation of the product
• In I/V service pharmacist is responsible for
a) That the preparation of the final product be
accomplished under aseptic condition
b) That the drug interactions be avoided through the
judicious choice of additive and mixing techniques
c) the final product is appropriated labeled, dispensed
and stored.
7. PREPARATION AND DISPENSING
OF I/V ADDITIVE SOLUTIONS
• The 1st step in the preparation of the I/V solutions include
preparation of label. Label must include the following
information
1. Patient identification
2. Physicians name
3. Date of compounding
4. Expiry date
5. Identification of pharmacist preparing the product
• Preparation of I/V solution must be done under laminar
flow hood.
8. AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED FOR
PREPARATION OF I/V SOLUTIONS
• Pharmacist must have understanding of
1. Parenteral feed therapy
2. Nitrogen balance
3. Acid base balance
4. TPN delievery system
5. Drug laboratory interactions
• Pharmacist must be aware of current standards on sterile
admixtures and quality assurances
9. • Types of drugs prepared under this system includes
1. Parenteral hyperalimentation solutions
2. Cytotoxic drugs
13. CONT.
• Pull the lower eyelid down to make a ‘gutter’.
• Bring the dropper as close to the `gutter' as possible
without touching it or the eye.
14. CONT.
• Apply the prescribed amount of drops in the ‘gutter’.
• Close the eye for about two minutes. Do not shut the
eye too tight.
• Excess fluid can be removed with a tissue.
15. CONT.
• If more than one kind of eye-drop is used wait at least
five minutes before applying the next drops.
• Eye-drops may cause a burning feeling but this should
not last for more than a few minutes. If it does last
longer consult a doctor or pharmacist.
16. RATIONAL USE OF EAR DROPS
• Warm the ear-drops by keeping them in the hand or
the armpit for several minutes. Do not use hot water
tap, no temperature control
20. CONT.
• Use cotton wool to close the ear canal after applying
the drops ONLY if the manufacturer explicitly
recommends this.
• Ear-drops should not burn or sting longer than a few
minutes
