Game Theory Essay
Game Theory was said to have been introduced by Emile Borel in 1921. Borel was a French
mathematician who published papers on the theory of games. From this standpoint and according to
the article Game Theory , Borel could have been named the first mathematician to envision an
organized system for playing games however; evidence has shown that Borel did not develop his ideas
any further. This is the reason why most historians have given credit to John Von Neumann.
Von Neumann was born in 1903 in Budapest, Hungary. His first mathematical paper was published,
along with the help of his tutor, when he was 18. Von Neumann went on to study mathematics in
college and eventually earned his PhD in mathematics with a minor in both physics and ... Show more

In Game Theory Models and Methods , the prisoner s dilemma is said to be the most widely known
example of game theory. This dilemma was invented by Albert Tucker of Princeton University in
1950. In this dilemma, one is to imagine two people arrested under suspicion of having committed a
crime together. The police do not have sufficient evidence to convict the criminals. They are placed in
two separate rooms and the police visit each suspect, offering a deal. The deal is basically, whoever
gives up evidence on the other person will go free. If neither suspect takes the offer, they are working
against the police and both will receive a small punishment because of lack of evidence. Both suspects
appeared to have won because neither took the offer, but were given a small punishment. However, if
one suspect takes the offer and betrays the other, the one who gave up the evidence will gain more
because he will be set free and the one who remained quiet will get the full punishment. However, if
both suspects betray each other, they will both receive punishment. From this example, we learn that
each suspect was given a choice between only two options, but cannot make a good decision without
knowing what the other one will do (Game Theory Models and Methods). This strategy is still used
today not only be police officers and detectives, but it is also used in some of the criminal television
shows,

Who Is Joseph Conrad Uncivilized
Through contemplation of Joseph Conrad s complex descriptions and ideas of life in Africa, or the
heart of darkness, it can be established that he is, in fact, not racist. Conrad was simply expressing the
dark, uncivilized manners of the African people to contrast the light European hoi polloi and the unfair
dehumanization of slaves in his time period. The African people that Conrad viewed as uncivilized
could be considered an act of racism; however, it is also logical to believe that he was merely trying to
demonstrate the common, effete opinion among Europeans of this time frame. This would also explain
Conrad s complex framed narrative as he didn t want to be viewed as racist. His framed narrative
could demonstrate the confusion he had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He was not racist, but it could be concluded that Conrad was generally not a fan of humanity; It was
very simple, and at the end of that moving appeal to every altruistic sentiment it blazed at you,
luminous and terrifying like a flash of lightning in a serene sky: Exterminate all the brutes! (Conrad
407). At the surface, this quote seems to be a cry for the brutes or Africans to be destroyed, yet it could
also be assumed that Conrad is absolutely tired of the darkness of mankind in general. Ellie Arielle
addresses this quotation, as well, by saying; Although Kurtz is implying that the people and the
situation in the Congo are in need of some considerable control and that the only solution he sees is
extermination, what Marlow realizes is that humanity is not the cause of the problem and that the
Africans are not the heart of darkness, but that greed and lust for economic freedom is. (Arielle) The
topic of economic freedom appears frequently throughout the novella especially with the arrival of the
ribald Eldorado Exploring Expedition. It is clear that the European men are oblivious to their
surroundings and only interested in money and this is another way for Conrad to show how humanity
has let him down. One critic explains that Heart of Darkness offers an, analysis

Mary Wilson s Singing Career
In a world full of other different singers, what makes a singer important when there are other singers
around the world? Mary Wilson was a singer that had touched and changed the lives of many. Mary
Wilson was part of a singing group known as the Supremes, previously known as the Primettes in their
younger days. Her original group was Florence Ballard, Diana Ross, and Mary Wilson. She was
known as Mary Wilson of the Original Supremes and her motto was Dreams do come true . Mary
Wilson was born on March 6th, 1944 and has loved to sing. Her career had started during elementary
school when they had performed for the school s talent showcase. There she met Florence Ballard.
They both promised to remember each other if they joined a singing group. Florence Ballard was
asked if she had wanted to become a part of a singing group and she had followed through with her
promise, inviting Mary Wilson with her. So what exactly did Mary Wilson do in her singing career?

Well, she had loved it ever since the start. She had performed for her elementary school and had made
a promise that would lead her to her invitation into the Primettes which led to the development of the
Supremes. Mary Wilson was dedicated to singing and she loved it with her life. Eventually, in January
1970, the Supremes were down to one last original member, Mary Wilson. However, Mary Wilson
continued to do what she loved and had introduced two other people making them known as the New
Supremes . Her previous group was replaced with Cindy Birdsong and Jean Terrell. This was the start
of her new nickname: Mary Wilson of the Original Supremes . No matter what she had stayed with
what she loved the most and that was her singing. She had stayed dedicated to her group even when
everyone else had left her. They had ended up releasing, even more, top ten hits and even releasing

History Of The Periodic Table Of Elements
Leonardo Miranda Mr. Tagami Chemistry 10/24/14 History of the Periodic Table of Elements The
construction of the Periodic Table of Elements was prior to the discovery of the individual elements.
Elements such as silver, gold, tin, copper, lead and mercury have been known for centuries. In 1649,
the first scientific discovery of an element was made by Hennig Brand when he discovered
phosphorous. Prior to Brand s discovery, chemists had acquired an immense body of understanding
concerning the properties of elements and their compounds for the next 200 years. By the year 1869, a
collection of 63 elements had been revealed. As the number of known elements increased, scientists
began to notice patterns in properties and formulate classification schemes. In 1862, a French
geologist, A.E.Beguyer de Chancourtois, recorded a list of the elements on a cylinder regarding their
individual atomic weights. He was the first to identify that elemental properties reoccur every seven
elements. There has been some deviation on who deserves credit for being the father of the periodic
table, either the German Lothar Meyer or the Russian Dmitri Mendeleev. Both chemists shockingly
produced similar results during the same time period working individually. Meyer s 1864 textbook
included a shortened version of the periodic table, which contained about half of the known elements
ordered by their atomic weight and valence charges. In 1868, Meyer assembled a prolonged version of

Gender Gap In Pay Essay
The film and television industry is a particularly difficult field for women to advance and be heard in
because of the commercial structure of the industry and its need to draw on significant amounts of
capital to finance projects. It is only by addressing the funding challenge that this gender gap can be
closed. To illustrate this, this paper will look at the data from several studies to confirm the existence
of the gender gap, analyze the potential causes with particular focus on how the levels of capital
required and the drive for a return of profit on that capital create the significant barrier, and propose
what is the most effective means of remedying the problem.
Generally, women creators and women s perspectives in the creative arts ... Show more content on

Why are women creators and women s perspectives so under represented in film and television?
Based on the date and analysis in these reports it appears that there are institutional impediments
related to the difficulties of acquiring both the progressive experience in the industry and the
necessary funding for film and television projects that are significant obstacles to women creators in
film. The studies indicate that there is near parity between the genders at the student level. So the
barriers are clearly more significant at a later career stage. Key occupations that are gateways to
directing, including editors, cinematographers and first assistant directors, are themselves male
dominated (Coles 2). To progress into the director s chair, most candidates need to work their way up
through progressive roles such as A.D. or cinematographer. But the barriers to women appear to be
nearly as significant for those positions as they are for the position of director ( Gender Inequality in
Film ). So although this paper focuses on women as directors, many of the same observations could be
made about women as cinematographers, assistant directors and producers. Women are denied the key
roles and thus the normal path to becoming

The Great Depression Of Franklin D. Roosevelt
Coming off of a century of success and prosperity as a result of the new way of living, America
thought it was on top of the world and living the good life all until it underwent the catastrophic period
commonly known as the Great Depression. Beginning around the 1930s, the Great Depression is
probably one of the most significant economic downfalls in America that also ended up affecting the
global economy. Around 1933, about 14 millions American citizens saw unemployment, the national
income was over 50 percent down, and production of industrial goods dropped to one third of what it
was in 1929. In response to this time of devastation, Franklin D. Roosevelt took over from Herbert
Hoover as president in order to restore America to what it once was with his concept of the New Deal.
Roosevelt commenced a brand new way of American life as he focused on creating a social
democratic order, much like that of Western European nations. Additionally, the federal government
gained much more power as a whole, but more specifically in the economy. Roosevelt also aimed for a
greater sense of community by not trusting individualism and by providing aid to those in need.
Finally, he aimed towards restoring capitalism, not replace it. Through his implementations of the
New Deal, Roosevelt successful provided relief, recovery and reform from the deplorable effects
brought about by the Great Depression. So what actually caused such a difficult time in American
history? The national

The Transforming Vision By Brian Walsh And Richard Middleton
The Transforming Vision, written by Brian Walsh and Richard Middleton, yearn for a change in the
way Christianity is viewed. According to the authors, science, technology and economic growth is
what shapes our society, while Christianity stands in the sidelines. The authors aspire to see a change
in Christianity where it may receive social and cultural embodiment. In the first chapters, Walsh and
Middleton explore the reason behind why Christianity of North Americans is so disembodied
compared to others. In addition, Transforming Vision explores the different types of worldviews
compared to a Christian worldview, or biblical view. Furthermore, it discusses how the different type
of world views affects us and if there is any worldview better than another. Chapter 1, World View and
Culture, begins with Anthony s story and how his decision had different responses. After Anthony
became a Christian and grew as a person, he made the decision of leaving his girlfriend when he
realized he did not love her. According to his family, loyalty is one of the greatest of moral duties,
therefore, viewed Anthony s decision as an unpardonable sin. However, in a Christian s perspective
his actions were honest and caring. Each side had a different point of view. World views are described
in the book as perceptual frameworks and not systems of thought like theologies or philosophies. Two
examples are then given to understand how certain cultures view situations, like child rearing

Childhood Obesity Epidemic, By The Encyclopedia Of Science
For the past few decades, the dire situation of obesity in America has gotten worse and is now
affecting new generations of young Americans. Every day the poor eating and physical choices that
children make can lead them to a life with diabetes, heart disease, and cancers. The unhealthy lifestyle
that children have is influenced by their parents and the society that surrounds them. This
unprecedented surge of poor lifestyle choices has lead to an epidemic that young children are now
facing. Ultimately, the health of young children is at stake. Being obese is not just being overweight,
but being overweight at an unhealthy level. The way to classify someone as overweight is by using

As stated in the Encyclopedia of Science s article, obesity is affecting any child from any ethnicity or
race, age, economic backing, or region. Hispanic children, African American children, native
American children, and any other children with bad quality eating habits, especially in the south, are at
an exceptionally higher risk. The southern part of America is known for their comfort food, which is
extremely fattening, and is the reason why children living in the south have an exceptionally higher
chance of becoming obese. In the African American communities, as well as the Hispanic
communities, nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. Children who are at a lower
economic standing may have a higher chance of developing obesity, but that doesn t mean wealthier
children are immune. The site, Let s Move states that without solving this issue, 1/3 of all children
born after 2000 will suffer from diabetes at one point in their lives. Statistics from the Encyclopedia of
Life Science show that this number is still growing and is being compared to the 7% of obese children
and 5% obese teens in the 1980 s, to show the changes needed to be done in society. More action, now
more than ever, needs to be taken against obesity. Obese children risk developing cardiovascular
problems, cancers and as well as

The Othered Victorians
The Othered Victorians Introduction The Victorian period was a time of great hypocrisy. Despite the
fact that the Protestant work ethic was gaining popular support amongst the Victorians and myths such
as Samuel Smiles rags to riches became part of mainstream Victorian culture, the Victorians were
greatly divided into their respective social classes. Works like Thomas Carlyle s The Irish Widow and
Elizabeth Barrett Browning s The Cry of the Children exemplified the blatant disregard of the upper
classes to that of the lower class. If the Victorians were divided amongst themselves, imagine what it
was like for people of different religions and races. The Blacks of this period was one such race that

The presence of black servants within the household also represented a sign of wealth (it meant that
you had enough money to keep a servant; it also signified a sense of acculturation because of the
exploration and discovery of new lands home of the black slaves). Differences Many Victorians not
only looked upon blacks as slaves or booty in war but they truly believed there were physical as well
as mental differences between them. The Victorians believed that blacks were uncontrollable and
salacious. The life of Sara Baartman (The Hottentot Venus) was used as evidence in support of these
allegations ( The Life and Times 1). Sara Baartman was a black woman from South Africa during the
1800 s that had a steatopygia or enlarge buttocks ( Exhibiting 1). She was displayed naked first in
France and then throughout Europe because of this. Many other parts of her body were said to larger
than the normal size. When she died at age 26, scientists dissected her body and found that, Baartman
s oversized primitive genitalia was physical proof of the African women s primitive sexual appetite (
Exhibiting ). This contributes to the belief that there were no virtuous black women, which meant they
could not be gentlewomen like the ladies of the Victorian period. The science of phrenology, [t]he

how lowly they are viewed in society. Females can be seen as unworthy or nothing without a man if
they are not advocating them and are constantly being treated differently from men. However, in the
book, The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, they live up to their reputations for how they view
themselves. Specifically, being focused on women like Pecola, and Claudia. They are often

We will say no. We don t know what we should feel or do if she does, but whenever she asks us, we
know she is offering something precious (Morrison, 24). This quote shows how prepared a woman is
to give up her body in exchange for her life because perhaps she does not value herself and has gone
through many situations like this. This event may lead to female s perspective of their worth decrease,
since they are constantly being abused. In the course of The Bluest Eye, Pecola Breedlove has shown
signs of low self esteem. She would always be the one to compare herself to something she admires to
be beautiful. Perhaps, sometimes problems surround her get a little too much, she has not yet realized
the fog will clear up. For example in the autumn chapter, a quote has said Thrown, in this way, into the
binding conviction that only a miracle could relieve her, she would never know her beauty. She would
only see what there was to see: the eyes of other people. There is no such thing as a Pecola s point of
view . She lives off of people s judgements and believe physical appearance is all there is to a person.
Her desire to be beautiful is not having attractive long black hair and golden skin color, but blonde
hair with a white pigmentation. Which causes her to dream and want even more. Claudia, another
character who goes through a similar situation compared to Pecola. She is a young girl who came out
from a loving family and is intrusive, yet sensitive.

great in the process. Moreover keeping them informed about upcoming events within the organization
so they can be prepared ahead of time. Another thing would be managers acknowledging good deeds
done over a period of time per employee so that they can feel welcomed in the company. Lastly, create
opportunities for different roles within the company for employees who show interest in furthering
with the company on higher levels than what they are currently on. A great way to foster motivation
among employees is to give them something to focus on. If an upcoming sale is set to start running on
a certain date, for example, they should be notified in advance. Keeping employees regularly informed
of events lets them prepare ahead of time and make great presentations that attract the consumer and
ultimately benefit them. Managers should reward their employees for jobs well done. This public

Comparing Bare-Nosed Wombats And Water
Wombats are herbivores that feed at night and mainly eat grasses. Some of these grasses include snow
tussocks for Bare nosed wombats and spear and perennial grasses for Southern Hairy nosed wombats.
They also eat herbs, roots, fungi, leaves, mosses, marsh plants and seem to prefer young tender grass
shoots when available. Bare nosed wombats also forage for food along the seashore. During droughts
they also tend to dig up dead grass to get to the roots. Wombats must also conserve energy because
their diet is low in protein and high in fiber. Since Hairy nosed wombats live in dry climates often the
only water they get is from their food and they do not drink much water. Bare nosed wombats
however, like to drink water frequently. These marsupials ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Impact Of The Land Administration Projects
Changes in Customary Land Administration and Building Synergy in Pluralistic Institutional
Environment in Sub Sahara Africa: Examining the Impact of the Land Administration Projects (LAP)
in Ghana
Research Background and Problem
Plurality of institutions is a unique feature of the land administration system in Africa. This system is
characterized by the operations of traditional landholding institutions that have been in existence and
has been holding land time immemorial on ground of ancestry together with statutory established
formal land agencies that is required to complement efforts of the former. Traditional institutions in
some countries continue to play key role in the system, despite widespread implementation of the
formalization ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is argued that multiple institutional and legal structures could bring about contradictions and
insecurity regarding whose rights count, whose rights will be supported in the event of a contest, and
which decision making structures are paramount resulting in institution shopping (Toulmin, 2009). In
Ghana, the pluralism systems are poorly articulated and has been the cause of growing contradiction
and conflict (Kasanga and Kotey, 2001). This can be substantiated by studies from Yeboah and Shaw
(2011) that find the traditional institutions are making makeshift plans in order to sell lands even
without the knowledge of the appropriate planning authority. Also, Biitir and Nara (2016) finds that
land governance in Ghana is hampered by lack of cooperation and collaboration between these
institutions. The state of the pure distinct operations of the customary and statutory land tenure
institutions therefore denies synergistic effect (Cousin and Hornby, 2005).
In the wake of the aforementioned factors and address resulting problems, previous and present
governments of Ghana have made attempts to streamline the system through land policies and
projects. The Land Administration Projects (LAP) is currently being implemented (Government of
Ghana, 2008). This

Social Security Tax
Taxes are a necessary evil in any civilization. In order to keep the government running and pay for
goods and services, like police and a defense force, everyone must pay their fair share so that money
can be collected to foot the bill, so to speak. Social Security is one such service. The Social Security
program helps seniors to be able to live in retirement and also helps the less fortunate who need
government assistance for various reasons. While most citizens pay their fair share of the tax, there is
a bias in the system towards the very rich. This bias makes the Social Security tax not only a recessive
tax, but also one that unfairly burdens the less fortunate with the bulk of the costs. The tax ... Show

The higher a person s income above the taxation cap, the less of a percentage of their income they pay
into the system. It is thus possible for a person who makes $40,000 a year to pay a higher tax rate than
a person who makes $1,000,000 a year. Thus, Social Security must be considered a recessive tax.
Furthermore, one must take into account who in fact will be receiving the benefits of the Social
Security Program. It is logical to assume those who have better access to health care and the ability to
pay for health care costs will live longer than those who do not. Moreover, the nature of one s work

Should Ionizing Radiation Be Used In Medical Diagnosis
INTRODUCTION
Radiation procedures used to diagnose medical conditions over the past century have grown from a
scientific curiosity to a pervasive, essential part of modern health care. Radiology originated with
ionizing radiation to diagnose human disease, however since discovering the physiological risks
associated with ionizing radiation, such as mutation/cancer, an ongoing controversy arises as to
whether ionizing radiation should be used in medical diagnosis. This investigation will analyze each
end of the argument continuum to determine if ionizing radiation should continue to be used in
medical diagnosis.
BACKGROUND PHYSICS
Ionizing radiation is any type of particle (neutrons, betas or alphas) or electromagnetic wave (gamma
rays, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are different types of ionizing radiation, including gamma rays and x rays, which have been
known to cause cancer. Additionally, because x rays can kill living cells, when improperly used they
can cause severe burns, cancer, leukemia, and cataracts. They can speed aging, reduce immunity to
disease, and bring about disastrous changes in the reproductive cells.
Having few procedures employing ionizing radiation throughout your life may seem harmless, but as
the levels of doses increase, your risk of developing cancer rises at the same rate, according to the
LNT model. Figure 4 below exhibits potential medical consequences of certain periods of exposure to
ionizing radiation:
CONCLUSION
Given the evidence, it can be concluded that while there are risks that arise with ionizing radiation in
medical diagnosis, overall the benefits outweigh the risks, as doctors are able to diagnose various
health concerns that would go undetected otherwise. That being said, ionizing radiation should
continue to be used in medical diagnosis as they provide valuable medical procedures that can
ultimately save

Goffman s Negotiating White Power Activist,
Stigma is something most people can relate to. It is the feeling of unacceptance and disapproval.
Goffman s theory of social stigma describes stigma as an attribute, behavior, or reputation that is
socially discrediting . Stigma impacts those who are seen as deviant in many ways, they may have to
change the way the express themselves in public and even in private. In a world where diversity is a
common goal there is much stigma attached to those who do not support it. A group against the social
norm of racial diversity, is in other words, deviant! Pete Simi and Robert Futrell s article, Negotiating
White Power Activist Stigma , discusses a groups way of avoiding stigma through concealment. A
specific group comes to mind when one thinks of white supremacist, one of the most radical, deviant,
and stigmatized social movements The U.S. white power movement (WPN) (Futrell and Simi). ...

Gandhi s Use Of Nonviolent Civil Disobedience
Until 1947, the British crown ruled over the entire country of India. Indians were treated like second
class citizens below British citizens for years, even though it was their home country. Mohandas K.
Gandhi was an Indian rights activist during this time who eventually became known as the father of
Indian nationalism for his achievements in gaining Indian autonomy while averting civil war.
Although he was an activist for Indian independence, he was also an advocate for peace. Throughout
the duration of the movement, he always encouraged the protestors to never use violence or fight back
against British officers, even when they attacked them. His tactics were considered uses of nonviolent
civil disobedience, or satyagraha . Nonviolent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He started this movement after the English cloth industry put the once thriving Indian cloth industry
out of business. It was also a statement of self sufficiency, making the spinning wheel a symbol of
Indian independence. The spinning wheel is currently featured in the center of the national flag, as
well. Another example is Gandhi s Salt March. In 1930, he walked across the country to the ocean,
with his followers in tow, in order to make salt from the sea. This was a large blow to the British
government because Gandhi made the mach symbolic. British industry had a monopoly of the salt
industry and made it illegal for anyone to make salt without a special permission, so when Gandhi
made salt, he broke the law and defied the British dominance over economy and government.
Throughout all of Gandhi s protest movements, he never encouraged or resorted to violence in order to
meet an end. His philosophy of satyagraha, or nonviolent civil disobedience, sent a message. He

The Center And Yorkdale Mall
The socioeconomic significance of malls is seen through visual culture, where the mall has become a
place to meet up with friends and family, on any day of the week weekends being the busiest. Hence
the mall has become a centre of life, where the most memorable moments, holidays and birthdays are
spent, dinners are held all under one roof (Stokrocki 80). In Toronto the two largest malls I explored
were the Toronto Eaton s Centre and Yorkdale Mall both of which included over 200 stores, eateries,
rainforest cafés, and a movie theatre. However what was evident about these two malls apart from the
rest included anti social behaviours despite families being grouped together. Although people were
together, the sense of togetherness was plastic just like the manikins of store displays. It appeared as
though families were shopping just as an excuse to go out as a family even though children, teens and
adults would disperse into the stores of their choice and meet up at the end for a takeout meal,
contacting each other through their phones. In addition to this observation included the fact that
families shopping with other families or family friends were more of an exploitation of social and
economic class. People being able to spend at stores like Michael Kors, Coach, Tory Burch,
Abercrombie Fitch, Lululemon, Kate Spade and many more, without worrying about going over
budget meant being affluent. What really needs to be questioned is the idea that if these people spend

General Electric s Proposed Acquisition of Honeywell
General Electric s Proposed Acquisition of Honeywell Synopsis and Objective: October 19, 2000
Honeywell s stock was up $10 due to recent merger discussions between Honeywell and United
Technologies Corporation (UTC). For every share of honeywell, UTC would pay 0.74 of its own
stock. In other words, the merge would lead to a dominant supplier company in the aerospace market,
and a strong competitor for GE. This led John F. Jack Welch Jr., GE s chair and CEO, to call Michael
Bonsignore, chair and CEO of Honeywell, to present a bid maintaining a 1:1 share for share exchange
ratio. GE won the bid against UTC and agreed to a price of 1.055 GE shares for every share of
Honeywell s, plus assumed debt. The regulatory filings were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

How would General Electric and Honeywell s stock prices be affected by the investigation? Anytime a
company is investigated by a regulatory commision it is generally a bad thing. The EC s investigation
of the stock prices would likely have an adverse affect on the stock price and stockholder confidence
of the two companies. General Electric investors know that Jack Welch is only on board with the
company until the acquisition with Honeywell is over. This means that General Electric will be soon
losing its cash cow of a ceo and if the deal doesn t go through then Welch will be going out on a bad
note. This skepticism of whether or not the regulatory commision will accept the merger would only
add to the question of General Electric moving forward positively in the future. Additionally,
Honeywell may choose to go with UTC if the merger with General Electric falls through. If
Honeywell does in fact go with UTC then the market position of General Electric will be
compromised and their stock will once again fall. For the Honeywell company the merger question
being questioned by a regulatory commision would likely lower their stock value as well. Investors in
Honeywell may fear that the deal will fall through and Honeywell will have wasted its resources.

The Varying Personas of People in Twitter and in Real-life
The Varying Personas of People in Twitter and in Real life Tom Marvolo Riddle from J.K. Rowling s
Harry Potter series had stored parts of his soul into different inanimate objects called horcruxes which
caused him to lose control of himself and become the infamous, Lord Voldemort. This gave him the
ability to live even though his physical body was gone and his soul continued to thrive in his set of
carefully selected objects, patiently waiting for the right time to strike. While the world of Harry

create their own set of horcruxes , not through inanimate objects but through various social

The Court Of A Public Telephone Booth
On the date of February 4th, 1965, believing that the Petitioner had been using public pay phones to
transmit illegal gambling wagers from Los Angeles to Miami and Boston, the Federal Bureau of
Investigation began their surveillance into the life of the Petitioner, Charles Katz. Fifteen days later on
February 19th, 1965 FBI agents working the case against the Petitioner had gained access to a phone
booth within a set of phone booths that the petitioner frequented on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles,
and summarily recorded the petitioner s side of conversations he was having on the phone within a
booth nearby. This surveillance lasted until the 25th (excluding February 22, as no evidence was
obtained due to technical difficulties) the date of the petitioner s arrest, which took place immediately
after he exited the same set of phone booths (Brief for Respondent 3). In this case there are two major
constitutional questions which need to be addressed: (1) whether evidence obtained by attaching an
electronic listening and recording device to the top of a public telephone booth used and occupied by
the Petitioner is gathered in violation of the Fourth Amendment, and (2) whether the search warrant
used by the FBI officers in this case violated the Fourth Amendment to the constitution in that the
warrant was (a) not founded on probable cause; (b) an evidentiary search warrant and (c) a general
search warrant. While the Petitioner would like the answer to be yes in both cases,

Free Trade Is The Policy Of Unrestricted Purchasing And...
Free trade is the policy of unrestricted purchasing and selling of goods between nations without the
imposition of barriers, such as tariffs and quotas. For example, if an American company wanted to
import a good to Canada, they would be able to do so free of import taxes. This is as a result of
NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, which allows free trade between Canada, the
United States, and Mexico. This is done in order to promote international trade between the different
zones. The theory of free trade is that, without the increase in transport cost that comes from tariffs,
imported goods are less expensive. This means, for a country such as the United States of America,
that consumer prices should drop while exports should increase, since the price to export has lessened
considerably. The most common counter to this idea, however, is the fact that there are some nations,
such as China, that lack the worker protections that are in place in the United States. This means that
manufacturing costs are far cheaper in some foreign nations. As a result, American workers, being
unable to compete with the low wages being paid to workers in other countries, are forced into
unemployment by outsourcing. This, in theory, leads to a weakened middle class whose purchasing
power is severely diminished. This has come to the forefront of recent politics, given the positions of
various presidential candidates on this important issue. Some, such as Bernie Sanders and Donald

Seamus Heaney
Seamus Heaney s Background and Poetry Seamus Heaney had a Roman Catholic upbringing in a rural
area of Northern Ireland. How does his poetry reflect his background? Heaney s poetry is able to
reflect his background by his use of language and the technique he expresses his experiences. I will
cover his background into three sections: his childhood, the community and his reflections. I will start
by looking at his feelings and experiences in the poem Death of a Naturalist . The poet remembers the
time when he was a young child. He saw the reality of what frogs were really like in the outdoors
compared to what was taught in school. In school, the frogs are described like a typical teacher talking
to young pupils. It is very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The finish illustrated how he feared for what was in the pond. He delivers his message very
effectively. He says an unequivocal word in the sentence; and I knew that if I dipped my hand the
spawn would clutch it. He knew that it would clutch his hand showing how positive and definite he
was feeling. The experience had so much impact on Heaney altering his emotions before the incident
occurred. The title is very striking and ironic. The definition of a naturalist is someone who is an
expert in natural history. Heaney was learning nature from direct observation but this stopped him
from ever becoming a naturalist due to the fact that he found it a nightmare. Hence the word Death
The poem is done with unrhymed iambic pentameter lines. The use of onomatopoeia is very frequent
such as: slap and plop , farting and gargled . The continuous, repulsive words help bring the poem to
life and show how terrifying his experience was. E.g. rotted , festered , slobber and slime kings . In the
first section, the poet shows that he has a scientific interest. This is shown by the way he uses the
technical names to call the frogs e.g. bullfrog and frogspawn rather than the patronizing words daddy
and mammy from the teacher. The second section is like vengeance and a punishment in the eyes of
the young poet. Heaney possibly never got past the simple idea that the frogs were not just mammy or
daddy frogs. The

Dorian Gray Choices
As J.K Rowling once said, It is our choices... that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities .
An individual s choices are reflective who they are and what they may become. In The Picture of
Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, Dorian s pivotal decision to strike a Faustian Bargain causes him to
incessantly make poor choices that eventually lead to his demise. This is illustrated through Dorian s
decision to befriend Lord Henry, become engaged to Sybil Vane, ignore his discovery of the portraits
power, and lastly his decision to murder Basil Hallward. In each of these cases, Dorian makes
increasingly worse choices that ultimately result in his destruction. To begin with, Dorian s decision to
befriend Lord Henry is the first choice ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the first place, Dorian s intentions with Sybil were not genuine. This is illustrated when Lord Henry
inquires about Sybil from Dorian; I will tell you, Harry; but you mustn t be unsympathetic about it.
After all, it never would have happened if I had not met you. You filled me with a wild desire to know
everything about life. For days after I met you, something seemed to throb in my veins (35). He later
on continues to say; You said to me once that pathos left you unmoved, but that beauty, mere beauty ,
could fill your eyes with tears. I tell you, Harry, I could hardly see this girl for the mist of tears that
came across me (37). From this it is evident that Dorian s feelings towards Sybil were insincere.
Dorian pursues her out of the sake of curiosity Lord Henry evokes in him. The idea of love and
passion now greatly appeal to Dorian although he himself doesn t fully comprehend what it is. The
idea of what Sybil Vane could mean to him draws him to her. Also, under the continuous influence of
Lord Henry Dorian now feels that beauty is the most important aspect in life. One of the sole reasons
he is drawn to Sybil is because of her exceptional beauty and her artistic talents. As a result, this leads
to Dorian s feelings for Sybil to be misplaced. He does not know anything about her yet due to his
yearning for love, as well as a heightened

Piaget Cognitive Development
From the five theoretical approaches we had, I decided to choose Piaget s cognitive development. In
Piaget s theory, cognitive development is discontinuous and takes place in several different stages,
which are all universal. According to Piaget, in his cognitive development theory, children establish
knowledge as they explore their world. To Piaget, cognitive development was a continuous
reestablishment of mental processes as a result of biological advancement and environmental
experience. Children establish their own understanding of the world around them, then experience
discrepancies between what they already know and what they discover in their environment, causing
this theory to be both nature and nurture, from genetic inheritance through ... Show more content on

When playing with my 7 year sister, according to Piaget she is on the stage of concrete operational,
she didn t react absolutely when playing peekaboo with her. If someone was to do that to me, and I m
18, I would just reply, I m past that stage. And that s how we see life, in stages. When observing my
seven year old sister, I noticed she learns other things that are way ahead of how one year old plays.
She will sometimes sit and rearrange her coloring pencils into the same color or colors that are similar.
According to Piaget, I decided to pour the same amount of water into two different shaped glasses,
and ask her which has more water. Of course she saw me starting with the same amount in the
beginning, and told me that is should be the same because it was the same in the first beaker. I was
surprised that she actually saw and figured that out. But when I hid it from her the next time, she
chose the very wide and short beaker as the one that has less water, and the very skinny, tall beaker as
the one with more

Punk Rock During The Cold War Essay
Thesis Paragraph:
The Cold War was a period of time where there was political and military tension between the United
States and the USSR. Punk rock bands had a lot to say about everything that was happening during
this period of time. Including revolutionary changes or almost having a nuclear war and they
expressed their thoughts through loud and fast songs. Punk rock was very popular in Britain and the
United States but mostly Britain. There were many more punks in Britain and it was acceptable to be a
punk. During the time of the cold war, punk rock was used to inform people of political conflicts
happening throughout the world and did it through music (1). Punk rock bands also sang about the
economic problems during the cold war. Before the cold war though swing, jazz, blues, and the big
band were very popular (6). Like punk rock during ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Punk rock was especially popular in Britain and many people began to become punks because of
unemployment and started to form bands then started to sing mostly about political, economic, or
social events happening during the cold war. Punk rock stayed popular from 1976 late 90 s then it
started to die down and not many people were forming bands anymore or producing many albums (5).
Before the cold war though swing, blues, country, and the big band was very popular. Popular
vocalists during this period include Frank Sinatra who sang jazz music, Bing Crosby who sang pop
and jazz music, Doris Day who was a big band singer, and Ella Fitzgerald who sang swing, pop, jazz
and blues (6). During the 1940 s was when these genes and singers/songwriters became very popular.
During these two time periods of different genres of music becoming popular they both happened
during a time of war and conflict. All the singers/songwriters of both times wrote songs about what
was occurring during that period of time whether it was the cold war going on or if it was during
world war

  • 2. Game Theory Essay Game Theory was said to have been introduced by Emile Borel in 1921. Borel was a French mathematician who published papers on the theory of games. From this standpoint and according to the article Game Theory , Borel could have been named the first mathematician to envision an organized system for playing games however; evidence has shown that Borel did not develop his ideas any further. This is the reason why most historians have given credit to John Von Neumann. Von Neumann was born in 1903 in Budapest, Hungary. His first mathematical paper was published, along with the help of his tutor, when he was 18. Von Neumann went on to study mathematics in college and eventually earned his PhD in mathematics with a minor in both physics and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Game Theory Models and Methods , the prisoner s dilemma is said to be the most widely known example of game theory. This dilemma was invented by Albert Tucker of Princeton University in 1950. In this dilemma, one is to imagine two people arrested under suspicion of having committed a crime together. The police do not have sufficient evidence to convict the criminals. They are placed in two separate rooms and the police visit each suspect, offering a deal. The deal is basically, whoever gives up evidence on the other person will go free. If neither suspect takes the offer, they are working against the police and both will receive a small punishment because of lack of evidence. Both suspects appeared to have won because neither took the offer, but were given a small punishment. However, if one suspect takes the offer and betrays the other, the one who gave up the evidence will gain more because he will be set free and the one who remained quiet will get the full punishment. However, if both suspects betray each other, they will both receive punishment. From this example, we learn that each suspect was given a choice between only two options, but cannot make a good decision without knowing what the other one will do (Game Theory Models and Methods). This strategy is still used today not only be police officers and detectives, but it is also used in some of the criminal television shows, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Who Is Joseph Conrad Uncivilized Through contemplation of Joseph Conrad s complex descriptions and ideas of life in Africa, or the heart of darkness, it can be established that he is, in fact, not racist. Conrad was simply expressing the dark, uncivilized manners of the African people to contrast the light European hoi polloi and the unfair dehumanization of slaves in his time period. The African people that Conrad viewed as uncivilized could be considered an act of racism; however, it is also logical to believe that he was merely trying to demonstrate the common, effete opinion among Europeans of this time frame. This would also explain Conrad s complex framed narrative as he didn t want to be viewed as racist. His framed narrative could demonstrate the confusion he had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He was not racist, but it could be concluded that Conrad was generally not a fan of humanity; It was very simple, and at the end of that moving appeal to every altruistic sentiment it blazed at you, luminous and terrifying like a flash of lightning in a serene sky: Exterminate all the brutes! (Conrad 407). At the surface, this quote seems to be a cry for the brutes or Africans to be destroyed, yet it could also be assumed that Conrad is absolutely tired of the darkness of mankind in general. Ellie Arielle addresses this quotation, as well, by saying; Although Kurtz is implying that the people and the situation in the Congo are in need of some considerable control and that the only solution he sees is extermination, what Marlow realizes is that humanity is not the cause of the problem and that the Africans are not the heart of darkness, but that greed and lust for economic freedom is. (Arielle) The topic of economic freedom appears frequently throughout the novella especially with the arrival of the ribald Eldorado Exploring Expedition. It is clear that the European men are oblivious to their surroundings and only interested in money and this is another way for Conrad to show how humanity has let him down. One critic explains that Heart of Darkness offers an, analysis ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mary Wilson was a singer that had touched and changed the lives of many. Mary Wilson was part of a singing group known as the Supremes, previously known as the Primettes in their younger days. Mary Wilson was born on March 6th, 1944 and has loved to sing. Her career had started during elementary school when they had performed for the school s talent showcase. Well, she had loved it ever since the start. She had performed for her elementary school and had made a promise that would lead her to her invitation into the Primettes which led to the development of the Supremes. • 5. History Of The Periodic Table Of Elements Leonardo Miranda Mr. Tagami Chemistry 10/24/14 History of the Periodic Table of Elements The construction of the Periodic Table of Elements was prior to the discovery of the individual elements. Elements such as silver, gold, tin, copper, lead and mercury have been known for centuries. In 1649, the first scientific discovery of an element was made by Hennig Brand when he discovered phosphorous. Prior to Brand s discovery, chemists had acquired an immense body of understanding concerning the properties of elements and their compounds for the next 200 years. By the year 1869, a collection of 63 elements had been revealed. As the number of known elements increased, scientists began to notice patterns in properties and formulate classification schemes. In 1862, a French geologist, A.E.Beguyer de Chancourtois, recorded a list of the elements on a cylinder regarding their individual atomic weights. He was the first to identify that elemental properties reoccur every seven elements. There has been some deviation on who deserves credit for being the father of the periodic table, either the German Lothar Meyer or the Russian Dmitri Mendeleev. Both chemists shockingly produced similar results during the same time period working individually. Meyer s 1864 textbook included a shortened version of the periodic table, which contained about half of the known elements ordered by their atomic weight and valence charges. • 6. Gender Gap In Pay Essay The film and television industry is a particularly difficult field for women to advance and be heard in because of the commercial structure of the industry and its need to draw on significant amounts of capital to finance projects. It is only by addressing the funding challenge that this gender gap can be closed. To illustrate this, this paper will look at the data from several studies to confirm the existence of the gender gap, analyze the potential causes with particular focus on how the levels of capital required and the drive for a return of profit on that capital create the significant barrier, and propose what is the most effective means of remedying the problem. Generally, women creators and women s perspectives in the creative arts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Why are women creators and women s perspectives so under represented in film and television? Based on the date and analysis in these reports it appears that there are institutional impediments related to the difficulties of acquiring both the progressive experience in the industry and the necessary funding for film and television projects that are significant obstacles to women creators in film. The studies indicate that there is near parity between the genders at the student level. So the barriers are clearly more significant at a later career stage. Key occupations that are gateways to directing, including editors, cinematographers and first assistant directors, are themselves male dominated (Coles 2). To progress into the director s chair, most candidates need to work their way up through progressive roles such as A.D. or cinematographer. But the barriers to women appear to be nearly as significant for those positions as they are for the position of director ( Gender Inequality in Film ). So although this paper focuses on women as directors, many of the same observations could be made about women as cinematographers, assistant directors and producers. Women are denied the key roles and thus the normal path to becoming ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Roosevelt Coming off of a century of success and prosperity as a result of the new way of living, America thought it was on top of the world and living the good life all until it underwent the catastrophic period commonly known as the Great Depression. Beginning around the 1930s, the Great Depression is probably one of the most significant economic downfalls in America that also ended up affecting the global economy. Around 1933, about 14 millions American citizens saw unemployment, the national income was over 50 percent down, and production of industrial goods dropped to one third of what it was in 1929. In response to this time of devastation, Franklin D. Roosevelt took over from Herbert Hoover as president in order to restore America to what it once was with his concept of the New Deal. Roosevelt commenced a brand new way of American life as he focused on creating a social democratic order, much like that of Western European nations. Additionally, the federal government gained much more power as a whole, but more specifically in the economy. Roosevelt also aimed for a greater sense of community by not trusting individualism and by providing aid to those in need. Finally, he aimed towards restoring capitalism, not replace it. Through his implementations of the New Deal, Roosevelt successful provided relief, recovery and reform from the deplorable effects brought about by the Great Depression. According to the authors, science, technology and economic growth is what shapes our society, while Christianity stands in the sidelines. The authors aspire to see a change in Christianity where it may receive social and cultural embodiment. In the first chapters, Walsh and Middleton explore the reason behind why Christianity of North Americans is so disembodied compared to others. In addition, Transforming Vision explores the different types of worldviews compared to a Christian worldview, or biblical view. Furthermore, it discusses how the different type of world views affects us and if there is any worldview better than another. Chapter 1, World View and Culture, begins with Anthony s story and how his decision had different responses. After Anthony became a Christian and grew as a person, he made the decision of leaving his girlfriend when he realized he did not love her. According to his family, loyalty is one of the greatest of moral duties, therefore, viewed Anthony s decision as an unpardonable sin. However, in a Christian s perspective his actions were honest and caring. Each side had a different point of view. World views are described in the book as perceptual frameworks and not systems of thought like theologies or philosophies. Despite the fact that the Protestant work ethic was gaining popular support amongst the Victorians and myths such as Samuel Smiles rags to riches became part of mainstream Victorian culture, the Victorians were greatly divided into their respective social classes. Works like Thomas Carlyle s The Irish Widow and Elizabeth Barrett Browning s The Cry of the Children exemplified the blatant disregard of the upper classes to that of the lower class. The Victorians believed that blacks were uncontrollable and salacious. The life of Sara Baartman (The Hottentot Venus) was used as evidence in support of these allegations ( The Life and Times 1). Sara Baartman was a black woman from South Africa during the 1800 s that had a steatopygia or enlarge buttocks ( Exhibiting 1). She was displayed naked first in France and then throughout Europe because of this. Many other parts of her body were said to larger than the normal size. When she died at age 26, scientists dissected her body and found that, Baartman s oversized primitive genitalia was physical proof of the African women s primitive sexual appetite ( Exhibiting ). This can be substantiated by studies from Yeboah and Shaw (2011) that find the traditional institutions are making makeshift plans in order to sell lands even without the knowledge of the appropriate planning authority. Also, Biitir and Nara (2016) finds that land governance in Ghana is hampered by lack of cooperation and collaboration between these institutions. The state of the pure distinct operations of the customary and statutory land tenure institutions therefore denies synergistic effect (Cousin and Hornby, 2005). In order to keep the government running and pay for goods and services, like police and a defense force, everyone must pay their fair share so that money can be collected to foot the bill, so to speak. Social Security is one such service. The Social Security program helps seniors to be able to live in retirement and also helps the less fortunate who need government assistance for various reasons. While most citizens pay their fair share of the tax, there is a bias in the system towards the very rich. It is thus possible for a person who makes $40,000 a year to pay a higher tax rate than a person who makes $1,000,000 a year. Thus, Social Security must be considered a recessive tax. Furthermore, one must take into account who in fact will be receiving the benefits of the Social Security Program. It is logical to assume those who have better access to health care and the ability to pay for health care costs will live longer than those who do not. Moreover, the nature of one s work would also affect health through injuries and bodily strain through manual labor. The wealthier a person is, the more likely they are to live a long life. It is fairly clear that the Social Security Tax affects the poor far more than it does the rich. Even among those under the tax cap, the more money one has, the more one can do to prolong their existence. The sad fact is that the lower an individual s income, the more the tax becomes detrimental to their daily life and less likely they are to ever receive the benefits of the program they have paid into. However what was evident about these two malls apart from the rest included anti social behaviours despite families being grouped together. Although people were together, the sense of togetherness was plastic just like the manikins of store displays. It appeared as though families were shopping just as an excuse to go out as a family even though children, teens and adults would disperse into the stores of their choice and meet up at the end for a takeout meal, contacting each other through their phones. In addition to this observation included the fact that families shopping with other families or family friends were more of an exploitation of social and economic class. People being able to spend at stores like Michael Kors, Coach, Tory Burch, Abercrombie Fitch, Lululemon, Kate Spade and many more, without worrying about going over budget meant being affluent. General Electric s Proposed Acquisition of Honeywell General Electric s Proposed Acquisition of Honeywell Synopsis and Objective: October 19, 2000 Honeywell s stock was up $10 due to recent merger discussions between Honeywell and United Technologies Corporation (UTC). For every share of honeywell, UTC would pay 0.74 of its own stock. In other words, the merge would lead to a dominant supplier company in the aerospace market, and a strong competitor for GE. This led John F. Jack Welch Jr., GE s chair and CEO, to call Michael Bonsignore, chair and CEO of Honeywell, to present a bid maintaining a 1:1 share for share exchange ratio. GE won the bid against UTC and agreed to a price of 1.055 GE shares for every share of Honeywell s, plus assumed debt. The regulatory filings were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... How would General Electric and Honeywell s stock prices be affected by the investigation? Anytime a company is investigated by a regulatory commision it is generally a bad thing. The EC s investigation of the stock prices would likely have an adverse affect on the stock price and stockholder confidence of the two companies. General Electric investors know that Jack Welch is only on board with the company until the acquisition with Honeywell is over. This means that General Electric will be soon losing its cash cow of a ceo and if the deal doesn t go through then Welch will be going out on a bad note. This skepticism of whether or not the regulatory commision will accept the merger would only add to the question of General Electric moving forward positively in the future. Additionally, Honeywell may choose to go with UTC if the merger with General Electric falls through. If Honeywell does in fact go with UTC then the market position of General Electric will be compromised and their stock will once again fall. For the Honeywell company the merger question being questioned by a regulatory commision would likely lower their stock value as well. Investors in Honeywell may fear that the deal will fall through and Honeywell will have wasted its resources. Should Bancroft sell its shares in Honeywell or should they be maintained? Rowling s Harry Potter series had stored parts of his soul into different inanimate objects called horcruxes which caused him to lose control of himself and become the infamous, Lord Voldemort. This gave him the ability to live even though his physical body was gone and his soul continued to thrive in his set of carefully selected objects, patiently waiting for the right time to strike. While the world of Harry Power is only a work of fiction, social networking sites have given ordinary persons the ability to create their own set of horcruxes , not through inanimate objects but through various social networking accounts. Through these modern horcruxes , people can divide the different personalities they possess into their social networking accounts to reach a wider set of audiences and live in the world of the Internet. Social networking sites have become popular over the years, like twitter, which allows users to present themselves through their tweets using photos, hyperlinks, or hashtags. Boyd (2010) argued that social media platforms like Twitter encourages members to use their actual identities but it does not mean people are presenting themselves online the way they do in real life. The Court Of A Public Telephone Booth On the date of February 4th, 1965, believing that the Petitioner had been using public pay phones to transmit illegal gambling wagers from Los Angeles to Miami and Boston, the Federal Bureau of Investigation began their surveillance into the life of the Petitioner, Charles Katz. Fifteen days later on February 19th, 1965 FBI agents working the case against the Petitioner had gained access to a phone booth within a set of phone booths that the petitioner frequented on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, and summarily recorded the petitioner s side of conversations he was having on the phone within a booth nearby. This surveillance lasted until the 25th (excluding February 22, as no evidence was obtained due to technical difficulties) the date of the petitioner s arrest, which took place immediately after he exited the same set of phone booths (Brief for Respondent 3). In this case there are two major constitutional questions which need to be addressed: (1) whether evidence obtained by attaching an electronic listening and recording device to the top of a public telephone booth used and occupied by the Petitioner is gathered in violation of the Fourth Amendment, and (2) whether the search warrant used by the FBI officers in this case violated the Fourth Amendment to the constitution in that the warrant was (a) not founded on probable cause; (b) an evidentiary search warrant and (c) a general search warrant. • 31. Free Trade Is The Policy Of Unrestricted Purchasing And... Free trade is the policy of unrestricted purchasing and selling of goods between nations without the imposition of barriers, such as tariffs and quotas. For example, if an American company wanted to import a good to Canada, they would be able to do so free of import taxes. This is as a result of NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, which allows free trade between Canada, the United States, and Mexico. This is done in order to promote international trade between the different zones. The theory of free trade is that, without the increase in transport cost that comes from tariffs, imported goods are less expensive. This means, for a country such as the United States of America, that consumer prices should drop while exports should increase, since the price to export has lessened considerably. The most common counter to this idea, however, is the fact that there are some nations, such as China, that lack the worker protections that are in place in the United States. This means that manufacturing costs are far cheaper in some foreign nations. As a result, American workers, being unable to compete with the low wages being paid to workers in other countries, are forced into unemployment by outsourcing. This, in theory, leads to a weakened middle class whose purchasing power is severely diminished. This has come to the forefront of recent politics, given the positions of various presidential candidates on this important issue. Some, such as Bernie Sanders and Donald ... Heaney s poetry is able to reflect his background by his use of language and the technique he expresses his experiences. I will cover his background into three sections: his childhood, the community and his reflections. I will start by looking at his feelings and experiences in the poem Death of a Naturalist . The poet remembers the time when he was a young child. He saw the reality of what frogs were really like in the outdoors compared to what was taught in school. In school, the frogs are described like a typical teacher talking to young pupils. It is very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He says an unequivocal word in the sentence; and I knew that if I dipped my hand the spawn would clutch it. He knew that it would clutch his hand showing how positive and definite he was feeling. The experience had so much impact on Heaney altering his emotions before the incident occurred. The title is very striking and ironic. The definition of a naturalist is someone who is an expert in natural history. Heaney was learning nature from direct observation but this stopped him from ever becoming a naturalist due to the fact that he found it a nightmare. Hence the word Death The poem is done with unrhymed iambic pentameter lines. The use of onomatopoeia is very frequent such as: slap and plop , farting and gargled . The continuous, repulsive words help bring the poem to life and show how terrifying his experience was. E.g. rotted , festered , slobber and slime kings . In the first section, the poet shows that he has a scientific interest. This is shown by the way he uses the technical names to call the frogs e.g. bullfrog and frogspawn rather than the patronizing words daddy and mammy from the teacher. The second section is like vengeance and a punishment in the eyes of the young poet. Heaney possibly never got past the simple idea that the frogs were not just mammy or daddy frogs. The ... An individual s choices are reflective who they are and what they may become. In The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, Dorian s pivotal decision to strike a Faustian Bargain causes him to incessantly make poor choices that eventually lead to his demise. This is illustrated through Dorian s decision to befriend Lord Henry, become engaged to Sybil Vane, ignore his discovery of the portraits power, and lastly his decision to murder Basil Hallward. In each of these cases, Dorian makes increasingly worse choices that ultimately result in his destruction. To begin with, Dorian s decision to befriend Lord Henry is the first choice ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the first place, Dorian s intentions with Sybil were not genuine. This is illustrated when Lord Henry inquires about Sybil from Dorian; I will tell you, Harry; but you mustn t be unsympathetic about it. After all, it never would have happened if I had not met you. You filled me with a wild desire to know everything about life. For days after I met you, something seemed to throb in my veins (35). He later on continues to say; You said to me once that pathos left you unmoved, but that beauty, mere beauty , could fill your eyes with tears. I tell you, Harry, I could hardly see this girl for the mist of tears that came across me (37). From this it is evident that Dorian s feelings towards Sybil were insincere. Dorian pursues her out of the sake of curiosity Lord Henry evokes in him. The idea of love and passion now greatly appeal to Dorian although he himself doesn t fully comprehend what it is. The idea of what Sybil Vane could mean to him draws him to her. Also, under the continuous influence of Lord Henry Dorian now feels that beauty is the most important aspect in life. One of the sole reasons he is drawn to Sybil is because of her exceptional beauty and her artistic talents. As a result, this leads to Dorian s feelings for Sybil to be misplaced.
