Native American Boarding Schools During the Westward Expansion
People know about the conflict between the Indian s cultures and the settler s cultures during the
westward expansion. Many people know the fierce battles and melees between the Indians and the
settlers that were born from this cultural conflict. In spite of this, many people may not know about
the systematic and deliberate means employed by the U.S. government to permanently rid their
new land of the Indians who had lived their own lives peacefully for many years. There are many
strong and chilling reasons and causes as to why the settlers started all of this perplexity in the first
place. There was also a very strong and threatening impact on the Native Americans... Show more

These native peoples, first mislabeled as Indians by an explorer named Christopher Columbus,
divided themselves into many different tribes, each with its own government, language, traditions
and religions. Europeans, who slowly poured into the Indian s land, did not respect the Indians
beliefs, interrupted their peaceful life and would do almost anything to get the land to them selves.
The settlers also believed the land that both the Indians and the settlers lived on was theirs to
themselves. They began to push the Native Americans off of their own land. Many of them fought
back to keep their homes, some succeeded, some didn t.
By the 1800 s most of the Native Americans signed a treaty with the European American
government. The results left the Native Americans on small pieces of land called reservations in
exchange for their land and peace. The European Americans promised that they would give the
Indians living on the reservations food, water, money and education for the children. Most of these
promises were not kept.
White man s schooling of the Native Americans helped cause the disintegration of the beliefs,
customs and ways of life of the natives residents of Turtle Island . One of the sources that helped
their culture vanish, not completely, were the Native American boarding schools. The boarding
schools put the Native Americans through so much pain,

Simon Cowell s Legacy
In our mind, we consider those who make a living out of crushing dreams of others as monsters,
yet Simon Cowell just does that. This unit is about someone who is leaving a legacy and this
paper s purpose is to prove that Simon Cowell is indeed leaving a legacy. Cowell is well known
for his brutally honest personality and bringing many contestants to tears after auditioning for him
as well as partnering up and creating American Idol, and Pop Idol. Cowell struggled throughout
most of his early career before getting the reputation he has now. From the very beginning Cowell
has proved he s different, and that continues to be true whilst comparing Cowell to other judges on
other shows.

Cowell will continue to be one of the most brutally honest judges that ever set foot on the America
s Got Talent judge line up. According to Simon Cowells Biography, Cowell has recently signed a
contract that guarantees him a spot as a judge for America s Got Talent, and this contract will be in
use until 2019. More appearances by Simon? No one s complaining about that! Some people may
think that Simon Cowell is just a regular judge on the America s Got Talent, but Simon is
different from the rest of these judges, he possesses something that all the others don t have, he
is painfully honest and rude. There is no way to express how condor like Simon is. When he has
something in mind he says it regardless of how rude or unprofessional it may sound, however
the audience members love it. It spices up the show while adding drama into it as well. Simon has
maintained his reputation throughout the years, yet he isn t all that bad. Some of the greatest
artists were discovered because of Simon. He has discovered many amazing artists and helped
them thrive in the process. He is responsible for creating many musical sensations states Fuse TV,
such as Little Mix, Fifth Harmony, Olly Murs, Cher Lloyd, Leona Lewis, Bea Miller, JLS,
Emblem 3, Alex Sierra, One Direction and many more well known artists.
Simon Cowell is the definition of direct. If he has something in mind, he will say it. It s almost
like his mouth isn t filtered, and he doesn t care much about it either. Cowell is well known for his

House Hunters Research Paper
From the purpose of the show to the demographics to the advertising, House Hunters is
successful all around but when it reflects society what does it say? House Hunters is a strong
reflection of society in several ways, the first being our society today is okay with making
purchases on debt. The mortgages put up by those who decide to purchase these homes,
especially in these episodes reflect the attitude of today which is purchase now and pay it off
later. By using credit to purchase something now and pay for it later, we have created a debt
society in which we live in today. The biggest example of a familyon the shows watched living this
out was in the third episode. The family decided to move to Taiwan without a job. The family

the houses were shown, The [houses] we looked at weren t even for sale... they were just our
two friends houses who were nice enough to madly clean for days in preparation for cameras!
(Walsh, 1) House Hunters and HGTV didn t hesitate to respond to this though, rather they
confirmed that the searching was staged telling EW that the, pursuit of a perfect home involves
big decisions that usually take place over a prolonged period of time more time than we can

Subtlety and Psychology in The Screwtape Letters by C.S....
The book, The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis, shows how Screwtape uses subtlety and
psychology when he is tempting human beings into sin. He plays with the patient s imagination,
emotions, will, and intellect. Also, he shows great shrewdness when encouraging sin that does not
appear to be sin. Screwtape shows effective psychologyin encouraging the patient to displace
intellect and will in prayer with imagination and emotion, and he shows subtlety in encouraging
gluttony of delicacy, pridein humility, and superiority in being part of an elite Christian social
circle. Screwtape uses psychology to manipulate the patient into replacing the intellect and will in
prayer with imagination and emotion. To remind the patient of his childhood... Show more content

In addition, when the patient says, for example, All I want is a cup of tea... and the teeniest bit of
really crispy toast, the sin of greed is successfully and unnoticeably committed, because it is used to
obtain exactly what one wants. Also, the All I want way of acting can become a hassle to others as
it asks of them to go out of their way in order to make something perfect. Moreover, it could
jeopardize friendships because perfection can never be attained, and the dissatisfaction resulting
from this causes ill temper towards others. Furthermore, while gluttony of delicacy may avoid the
sin of gluttony of excess, it produces querulousness, impatience, uncharitableness, and self concern,
counteracting the attempt to avoid sin in the first place. Screwtape shows subtlety in encouraging
gluttony of delicacy. Smartly using the virtue of humility as a means of sin, Screwtape shows his
subtlety when explaining how easily humility can be turned into pride. Once the patient is sincerely
acting humble, one has to just enlighten him of his humility, and the prideful thought that he
actually was just being humble will spoil the grace filled moment. Also, another way to accomplish
twisting the virtue of humility into pride, is to make the patient forget the meaning of humility;
make him believe that humility means to think less of his talents and himself; this plants dishonesty
into his soul where otherwise virtue could have grown.

Value Chain Approach And Actor Network Theory
Why use the Value Chain Approach and Actor Network Theory (ANT)
Value chains traditionally are those farmers can easily access. To comprehend complexities
involved in value chain a qualitative approach termed value chain analysis approach was used. The
approach is descriptive and allows linkage analysis of the farmer with different actors that are part
of the Ziziphus mauritiana chain. Inter mediators or the middlemen buy Ziziphus mauritiana from
rural peasants in Muzarabani. The middlemen also sale Ziziphus mauritiana to each other.
However, most of the Ziziphus mauritiana end up in the hands of bigger traders from markets like
Mbare Musika of Harare in Zimbabwe. The value chain analysis approach used has an array of
advantages. Different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The socio technical world is well explained (Langanki 2014). Especially, when local production of
spirits from Ziziphus mauritiana (kachasu) is explained. Actor Network Theory acts as an eye
opener. It gives a conceptual framework to the understanding of Ziziphus mauritiana value chain.
What about Power relation relations issue in Actor Network Theory?
Power relation are criticised to ANT approach. However in contrast ANT observed power being
in action. The linkages and Network power are recognised through ideas for undertaking
perceptions actions and opinions. Actors have voices and act as agencies. ANT emphasises use on
interactive power than the physical power. The concept of ANT is aligned to each network and
provided a radical approach to the discourse and other non human actors are treated as actors.
Actor Network Theory is used as a methodology for the study of the of the Ziziphus mauritiana
value chain. The value chain is viewed as an assemblage of networks. Being a theory and a
methodological approach ANT endeavours to develop analysis tools on focal actor, thats try to
control other actors. ANT can be used to shape the theoretical framework, hence enhancing the

It s important for an innovation system that knowledge can diffuse from one company to another,
especially in a heterogeneous context. It can be measured by number of workshops, conferences
and mapping size of the network.
Guidance of the search
Due to limited resources, companies have to choose what they want to develop and investigate. The
things they choose are the things of which they think it can positively change their processes. This
function can be measured by mapping the specific targets of firms, companies and governments.
Market formation
It s almost impossible for new technologies to compete directly from the beginning with incumbent
technologies. Therefore these new technologies need niche markets or (governmental) subsidies to
exist. This function can be measured by the number of niche markets and the number of subsidies.
Resource mobilization
There are financial and human inputs necessary to make the other functions working properly. It is
hard to measure this function, the best way is to interview different actors and institutions.
Creation of legitimacy/counteract resistance to change
Often when there is a new technologie an old one has to be overthrown. This can be measured by
mapping the growth and lobby actions of investment groups.
According to Porter there are 4 determinants to indicate whether there is competitive advantage in
an innovation system. The 4 determinants are:

Essay On Hester Prynne The Greatest Sufferer
What makes someone suffer? Does being tormented make you suffer? Is being made fun of by
peers suffering? The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is set in an old Puritan society
where many people are persecuted for not following religion in any way whether it is a small sin
or a large sin. Hester Prynne is the greatest sufferer in the novel because she was publicly
humiliated in front of the whole town and has been an outcast for most of her life in that town.
Hester has been the greatest sufferer due to Minister Dimmesdale always keeping his secret from
the town in that it was in his best interest. He has always seemed to hide in daylight but show up

Come, therefore, and let us fling mud at them! (120). Flinging mud at Hester and Pearl is
extremely disrespectful, nonetheless they do it anyways until Pearl scares them off. Even if
they didn t have mud spattered all over them it must have made her feel bad that even the young
kids dislike her for her sins. The town hates Hester as can be seen by this, This woman has
brought shame upon us all, and ought to die (60). People wanting her dead is extremely harsh for
having a baby and not saying who the father is when she is protecting him from the harshness of
the crowd as well. Hester has been doing a good thing for Minister Dimmesdale so no one knows
that he is the father. Keeping the secret from the crowd is difficult for she is suffering because it
would be a lot easier if she told who the father is, but she is keeping it in and it is easier to let
things out than keep them in. The Minister is never there for his child which can also impact him
by making him depressed. Some could say that the Minister is the greatest sufferer because he
always has the leech attached to him sucking his life from him. Minister Dimmesdale beckoning
for Hester and Pearl to stand with him, Ye have both been here before, but I was not with you.
Come hither once again, and we will stand all three together! (181). Dimmesdale is so depressed
that he wants to stand with Hester and Pearl on the town scaffold in the dark where no

Roman Catholic Contemporary Culture
Roman Catholic Theology and Contemporary Culture
Christy James
Grand Canyon University: HTH 469
April 3, 2016
Similar to that of the rise of classical liberal theology and Protestantism, the Roman Catholic
Church experienced a change in theological thought. Modernism led to increased biblical
criticism and called for Catholic theologies to adapt to the surrounding modern world. Just like
those who opposed liberalism, this new way of thinking was also faced with many within the
church who opposed it. In 1959 however, John XXIII was elected as the new pope who would set
out to bring the church up to speed with the modern world. The result was the formation of the
Second Vatican Council also commonly referred to as the Vatican II. Theologians Karl Rahner and
Hans KГјng s attendance to the council had a major impact because their ideas helped to advance a
Catholic theology which focused on bridging the gap between the church and contemporary culture.
Vatican II met at the Vatican City in Rome from 1962 to 1965. It was formed in order to discuss
different theological controversies that continued to confront the Church. Prior to this meeting the
church was experiencing the integralism movement. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
KГјng focused much of his theories on apologetics. For Kung, true Christian apologetics must take
seriously the secularism and atheism of modern Western culture and attempt to communication
Christian belief in a way that speaks to people of that mindset (Grenz Olson, 1992, p. 257). One
area of weakness for KГјng however is his Christology. In his book, On Being a Christian, he goes
into great detail about the historical personality of Christ. KГјng only associated Christ as being a
man consumed by God but never as God in the

The Introduction of the Electric Guitar
According to the Smithsonian Institute, electronic amplification is one of the most successful
innovations brought around at the end of the 1930s. The 1920s had a rise in the popularity of dance
music, and the recording industry was getting started. This was also the start of the Big Band Era
(guitaristsource.com). Guitarmakers started experimenting to develop a new, louder, guitar.
Electrical amplification was developed by the radio industry in the 1920s (howstuffworks.com). In
1931, George Beauchamp and Adolf Rickenbacker would go on to develop an electromagnetic
pickup they would later use to create the electric guitar. This first model would go on to be called
the Frying Pan , because of its resemblance to the cookware. This first model was often played
flat on the lap (howstuffworks.com). Eventually, electric guitars began commercial production
in the 1930s (Goertzen 435). In 1939, Les Paul, an acoustic guitarist, developed a new type of
electric guitar by placing the old pickup on a solid block of wood. This new solid body guitar
didn t have the feedback problems that the hollow bodied electric guitars had. Also, it had a
greater sustain than earlier models (howstuffworks.com). In order for an electric guitar to work, it
needs a pickup and an amplifier. Pickups are electro magnetic pieces on the guitar s body, and they
are usually found on the guitar s body in between the bridge and the fretboard. These electro
magnets create magnetic fields, which then

Bill Gates Leadership Style Essay
Introduction
Leadership style is designed according to a pioneer s behaviors, which is enveloped under
behaviorist theory. Inside of this class, distinctive examples of leadership behavior are watched and
classified as leadership styles. Practicing managers have a tendency to be the most keen on looking
into this specific theory in light of the fact that with it leaders can modify their style taking into
account the convictions, values, inclinations and society of the association they work for. Leadership
can also be conceived as a process where one or more persons influence a group of person to
move in a certain direction. The word leadership has been used in various aspects of human
endeavor such as politics, business, academics and social works. Messick and Krammer(2004)
debated about the degree to which the individual exhibits leadership traits depends not only on his
characteristics and personal abilities but also on the characteristics of the situation and environment
in which he finds himself. Bill Gates was born in 1955, had a love of computers and began
programming mainframe computers when he was 13 years old. The text below will consist of an
analysis of the leadership style of bill gates according to an existing leadership style theory.

Should Therapeutic Cloning Be Banned
There are two sides to the topic of cloning. One side believes it is unethical and should be banned.
The other side believes the benefits and possibilities outweigh the problems. The two most
controversial types of artificial cloning are reproductive cloning, and therapeutic cloning.
Reproductive cloning is the use of cells from a host to create a whole new genetic copy.
Therapeutic cloningis the use of embryonic stem cells to create tissue to replace damaged tissue
and whole organs. The ethical concerns with cloning didn t become a problem until Dolly, the

however, those experiments did not spark much public concern regarding cloning. Over fifty years

Essay on The Ambiguity in Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown
The Ambiguity in Young Goodman Brown
The literary critics agree that there is considerable ambiguity in Nathaniel Hawthorne s Young
Goodman Brown. This essay intends to illustrate the previous statement and to analyze the cause of
this ambiguity.
Henry James in Hawthorne, when discussing Young Goodman Brown comments on how
imaginative it is, then mentions how allegorical Hawthorne is, and how allegory should be
expressed clearly:
I frankly confess that I have, as a general thing, but little enjoyment of it, and that it has never
seemed to me to be, as it were, a first rate literary form. . . . But it is apt to spoil two good things a
story and a moral, a meaning and a form; and the taste for it is ... Show more content on

Ambivalence, or the simultaneous and contradictory attitude and/or feelings toward an object, etc.,
may well be the cause of the extreme ambiguity, doubt, uncertainty in the mind of the reader of
Young Goodman Brown. Intentional ambivalence on the part of the author in order not to offend
too many is a plausible explanation, as I would see things.
Terence Martin in Nathaniel Hawthorne expresses what I interpret as a possible source for the
ambiguity in Young Goodman Brown :
Assumed in the tale is a radical distinction between dream life and real life; the question proposed
to Goodman Brown is into which of these categories good and evil naturally belong. At the outset
of the story, Faith asks her husband to postpone his journey until sunrise and sleepin his own bed
that night. . . . Mulling over the guilty purpose that has brought him into the forest, Goodman
Brown recalls Faith s talk of dreams. . . . In the forest he goes through a dreamlike experience. . .
. The devil, furthermore, introduces a further notion of a dream. . . . Thus the counterpoised terms,
dream and relity, are shown to depend for their application upon a prior attitude toward the moral
nature of the world. For the devil, virtue is a dream; evil, the only reality(91).
It would seem that Martin s analysis

Bilirubin Test Results
Why am I having this test?
The bilirubin test is used to evaluate liver function. Your health care provider may recommend this
test:
If you have hemolytic anemia.
For a newborn who has jaundice.
What is being tested?
This test measures the level of bilirubin in the body. Bilirubin is produced when red blood cells are
broken down. Normally, bilirubin is broken down in the liver and excreted as a component of bile.
However, when red blood cells are broken down more quickly than usual, or when there is a
dysfunction in how bile is excreted, bilirubin levels can become elevated. In newborns with
jaundice, elevated bilirubin levels may put the child at risk for brain damage.
What kind of sample is taken?
This test can be performed using one of the following methods: ... Show more content on

How The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Changed America

Shirtwaist Factory Fire, often referred to as the fire that changed America, was one of the most
impactful events of the early 1900s and soon helped set motion into the era of labor reforms. On
March 25th, 1911, The Triangle Shirtwaist factory, owned by Max Blanck and Isaac Harris was
engulfed in flames. The factory was located in the top 3 floors of the Asch building in Manhattan,
New York. The terrific turn of events left firemen unable to rescue those inside. The exits were
locked and the fire escapes were unable to support rescue support. This left many people jumping
out of the windows to their death along with the multiple deaths already caused by the fire inside
the building. Unfortunately, 146 lives were lost before any changes could... Show more content on

Double Use Of Performative Essay
This paper will compare the use of the performative two poems: The Lake Isle of Innisfree by W.
B. Yeats and Digging by Seamus Heaney. Both these poems will be analyzed individually and in
comparison with one another on several themes, being performativity and desire. The main subject
is how desire is expressed through the performative in both poems. First, a brief explanation of the
performative as defined by Bennett and Royle. A performative is a statement which constitutes an
action, thus it does not only describes an action but also preforms the action. An utterance as I now

connects two people in marriage. Hence, literary texts can be considered... Show more content on

Even (or especially) with its title, a literary text has begun to promise. (Bennett Royle 2016.
313). This quote of Bennett Royle can be applied to the title of Heaney s poem. The poem starts
off with a performative, namely its title, and hereby promises that the poem will dig. And
digging is exactly what the poem is doing the whole time. The performative act of the poem is
that the speaker is digging throughout it, but rather than digging with a spade, he is using his
pen to do it. The poem expresses the speaker s desire to keep digging, like his father and
grandfather did, but he wants to do it in a different way. That he is not going to dig with a spade,
becomes apparent in the last two lines of the poem The squat pen rests. I ll dig with it. (Heaney
1966, 2953) . Furthermore, the last line is actually a performative: he is not merely stating it, but
he will actually do it. On the second line, Heaney refers to his pen as a gun: The squat pen rests;
snug as a gun. (Heaney 1966, 2953). It demonstrates that he does not see his pen as just a pen , but
as his instrument, his weapon. By choosing his pen, Heaney is not digging in the sense of
unearthing or burying. The act of digging also means the act of remembering, this will be further
explained later in this

Analyzing Dijkstra s Letter Essay
Critically Analyzing Dijkstra s Go To Statement Considered Harmful Recognizing the argument,
determining the types of reasoning used, and identifying logical fallacies are important aspects to
critically analyzing information. The paragraphs that follow provide a critical analysis of Edsger
Dijkstra s famous letter, Go To Statement Considered Harmful .
Critical Analysis
Recognizing the Argument In 1968, Edsger Dijkstra wrote a letter to the editor of Journal of the
ACM entitled Go To Statement Considered Harmful . In his letter, he insisted that the future of
programming would require a structural approach. Prior to this time, programmer s use of the go to
statement was conventional. Dijkstra argued that the usage of the go to ... Show more content on

He argued that if he were to stop a program at an arbitrary place in time that it was of the utmost
importance for the programmer to know exactly how his program reached that point and that it is
duplicable. When an unstructured go to statement is used, it can allow the execution of the
program to withdraw prematurely from a loop before it finishes completing. It also, can allow
the program to arbitrarily jump into a loop that has already initiated the process of iterating, thus
causing the programmer to have difficulty identifying a definitive answer to what the variables
actually represent at that specific time (Tribble, 2005). Dijkstra described, The unbridled use of
the go to statement has an immediate consequence that it becomes terribly hard to find a
meaningful set of coordinates in which to describe the process progress (Dijkstra, 1968, p.147).
Due to his discoveries, Dijkstra argued, The go to statement as it stands is just too primitive; it is
too much an invitation to make a mess of one s program (Dijkstra, 1968, p.147).
Determining Types of Reasoning Dijkstra used inductive reasoning as a way to present his
arguments against the go to statement. Inductive reasoning is an argument in which the premises
claim to support the conclusion in such a way that, if the premises are assumed to be true, then
(based on that assumption) it is probable that the conclusion is true (Herms, 1984). Dijkstra began
his letter by declaring that the go to statement

When I Decide To Be The Only Girl Essay
Deciding to be the only girl on the wrestling team and the failures I experienced therein, have
made me a stronger person today. The very nature of my being is adventurous and outgoing and I

As the only girl on the wrestling team, it was challenging at first. The guys were stronger than me,
they were weary to touch me, afraid that they would hurt me. However, one thing they did that I

Cleary Death Penalty
Death to the Death Penalty Contrary to popular belief, the death penalty s approval ratings have
decreased throughout the years, as a study executed by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg explains how
only three states administer the death penalty these days. Capital punishment has worked for a few
years to scare those who desire to commit a federal crime, but because the usage continually
diminishes (despite in a few states), why would the government keep the death penaltyif it costs
them millions per year? Cleary, the best option remains: to eliminate this form of punishment once

States like New York and New Jersey repealed capital punishmentafter their citizens spent over
$170 million on cases where no executions were made, according to a study done by Richard

Even Pope John Paul II believes that capital punishment must be eradicated from societies, as he

Class Struggle In Everything That Rises Must Converge By...
Class struggle is the tension between different classes resulted from different interest, social,
and economic position. There is always an intangible boundary between the ruling class and the
working class. All the members of two classes are well educated that they have to act as their
role, and none of them are allowed to violate the border between two classes. This idea is formed
and maintained by the ideological state apparatuses, particularly by family and school, in raising
children and forming society. How the members of different class treat each other has been

Women s Exploitation Of Women
The exploitation of women in production, and the exclusion of women from consumption is not
the only ways in which the female body is harmed as a result of the globalization of the fashion
industry. Perhaps the most obvious occurrence of female body harm in the fashion industry is a
result of fashion modeling. An up close look into the modeling industry as a microcosm of the
fashion industry reveals the severe objectification and commodification of fashion models for the
sake of consumption.
The modeling industry has created a culture of exclusion across genders and races. Author Ashley
Mears (2010) critically analyses the fashion industry, and how it influences production of culture
and beauty ideals around the world. The modeling world is extremely female dominated, and the
women who participate are continually commodified as they are used as a means to promote and
disseminate ideas of how women should look, (p. 23). Because consumption is valued so in today s
society, the model is employed based on her perceived ability to sell a product. The clothes she is
hired to wear and the beauty ideal that she is helping sell are more important than her humanity,
and she becomes dehumanized. Clothes take on such utmost importance that models are and
should be mere clothes hangers, with perfectly discrete bodies that will display the clothes but not
detract from them, (Mears, 2010, p. 35). Models are blatantly objectified as they are forced be
invisible for the sake of

My Wife And My First Child Essay
In December of 2008, my wife and I found out we would be having our fourth child. We were
living in Sugarloaf Key, FL while I worked in Key West, FL. Due to some unforeseen
circumstances with our landlord, we terminated our lease in Sugarloaf early, rather than finding a
place for the remaining six months we would be there. We moved the familyback home to North
Carolina over the Christmas break from school. I still had six months or so remaining before I
transferred to my new job in Tybee Island, GA. The military had moved us before, being a
military family moving was a bitter sweet occurrence. The family adjusted well and settled right
in. Having family close by to help ease this transition helped out greatly. The fourth addition to
our family was developing on schedule, regular doctor visits, and checkups. We decided that he
would be born in NC since my wife was comfortable with the doctor she was already seeing. The
estimated delivery date also worked with my work schedule and being home for the birth.
When I finished in Key West, I had a few weeks off before I started my new assignment in GA.
During these few weeks I rejoined my family in NC and took my wife house hunting in GA. We
found a great development just going up with a new K 8 school, which would be finished at the
start of the next school year, just outside the gate of the development. We decided to have a house
built and the time frame for completion fit in just right at the end of July. The idea of having

Reflection Paper On Domestic Violence Legal Clinic
I am an intern at the Domestic Violence Legal Clinic, located on the first floor of the Domestic
Violence Courthouse of Chicago at 555 W Harrison St. The clinic offers free civil legal
assistance to low income victims of domestic violence. I have been interning at the clinic since
August 28, 2017 for 15 20 hours a week. I originally intended to intern on Mondays and Fridays
from 8:30AM 4:30 PM, but due to holidays and instances in which the clinic was closed on
Fridays, I now also intern on Wednesdays from 8:30 AM 12:30 PM. A typical day for me at the
clinic begins at 8:30 AM, when the buildings opens. The actual court opens for first returns of
service 9:00 AM. I usually wait around 30 45 minutes until the clients fill out their intakes
before we proceed with the paperwork they need to file an order of protection. If there are no
clients by 9:30 AM, I usually go to the second floor to observe in court. Most of the time this
consists of cross examinations, which I don t observe often when I work with Pro Se litigants in
the afternoon. In other instances, when clients are not able to stay for the whole process of filing
an order of protection on Fridays, they come back on Mondays and I help them as soon as I get to

Adjusting to Cultural Change
Adjusting to cultural change: How U.S. business men and women have to adjust to various cultural
changers to succeed in the international market.
Abstract
Culture inevitably influences the needs and desires of consumers of particular countries and
socialized groups, consequently, businesses, in order to succeed have to be aware of cultural
interests and target their products and operations to cultural demands. Succeeding necessitates
knowing the factors that crisscross with the other culture and understanding the other culture s
practices in regards to these factors. It also requires an understanding of ethical practices of the
other culture as well as their communication style amongst other factors. The business wishes to
win customer trust and this too, hinges, on cultural constructs. In short, the goal of standardization
has given place to mastery of cross cultural communication. This is the challenge for the American
corporation that does business on a global scale.
Introduction
Culture, inevitably, influences the needs and desires of consumers of particular countries and
socialized groups, consequently, businesses, in order to succeed have to be aware of cultural
interests and target their products and operations to cultural demands. There is a certain collective
programming of the mind that operates in each and every culture and this cognitive programming

A child is reported as having active epilepsy if their guardian reports they have a history of
diagnosed epilepsy or seizure disorder (CDC, 2017). Seizures that those with epilepsy experience
fall into three main categories: generalized onset seizures, focal onset seizures and unknown onset
seizures. Generalized seizures affect both sides of the brain at the same time (Type of Seizures,
2017). Focal seizures begin in only one part or section of the brain (Type of Seizures, 2017). Focal
seizures can happen while the person is aware of the seizure (called focal onset aware seizures)
or when the person s awareness is impaired (called focal onset impaired awareness) (Type of
Seizures, 2017). Seizures are classified as unknown onset when it is unclear where the seizure
began (Type of Seizures, 2017). Seizure symptoms typically include loss of consciousness,
jerking movements, muscle tensing and weakness as well as spasms (Type of Seizures, 2017).
Focal seizures can also include automatic movements that a repeated in a rhythmic fashion such
as clapping or lip smacking (Type of Seizures, 2017). Often time EEG tests as well as blood tests or
brain imaging tests like MRI or CT scans can be used to help diagnose the type of epilepsy and

The National Association For The Education Of Young Children
According to Bredekamp (2014, p. 19), growing attention to early education primarily results from
impressive research demonstrating its effectiveness in improving outcomes for children .
Throughout this research, the organization National Association for the Education of Young
Children (NAEYC) , has established a set of standards for early childhood educational programs
(Bredekamp, 2014, p. 5). These standards were created specifically to help families determine
which preschool, kindergarten or child care program would be best for their child ( The 10
NAEYC, n.d.). Each of these standards set forth by NAEYC are important in their own way to
ensure the quality of early childhood educationfacilities. NAEYC has created ten early childhood
program standards (Bredekamp, 2014, p. 20). The standards can be broken down into two
distinguished categories with the first set of five standards, which include relationships,
curriculum, teaching, assessment of children s progress and health focus on the children
(Bredekamp, 2014, p. 20 21). The NAEYC believes that a good quality child care facility should
promote and encourage a positive relationship between adults and children as well as providing a
safe learning environment. It should have a curriculum in place and be able to implement it in
order to achieve its goals ( The 10 NAEYC, n.d.). A good program should use according to

Everyone Has the Capacity to Do Evil Essay

this case the authors of Macbeth, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Picture of Dorian Gray, Paradise

Oscar Wilde the author of the Picture of Dorian Gray also shares the same view as the quote from
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde that everybody is two different people the good and the evil. Dorian
Gray was a handsome and wealthy young gentleman who became extremely concerned about
preserving his beauty and to pursue his own pleasure above all else after he became influenced
by the teachings of Lord Henry. There were moments when he looked on evil simply as a mode
through which he could realize his conception of the beautiful. (ch.11) his obsession with beauty
drives him to commit serious crimes such as the murder of his friend Basil and the contribution
to the deaths of other people such as the suicide of his beloved Sibyl Bane whom Dorian left
broken hearted. He also contributes indirectly to the death of Sibyl s brother James after he seeks
revenge against Dorian for the death of his sister. He also contributed to the suicide of Adrian

Courtly Love in The Knight s Tale and The Wife of Bath s Tale
The noble knight slays the dragon and rescues the fair maiden...and they live happily ever after.
This seemingly clichГ© finale encompasses all the ideals of courtly love, which began in the
Medieval Period and still exists today. While these ideals were prevalent in medieval society, they
still existed with much controversy. Geoffrey Chaucer, a poet of the period, comments on courtly
love in his work The Canterbury Tales. Through the use of satiric elements and skilled mockery,
Chaucer creates a work that not only brought courtly love to the forefront of medieval society but
also introduced feministic ideals to the medieval society. At times, Chaucer even makes readers
question his beliefs by presenting contrasting elements of principle... Show more content on

While this idea of daring exploits and melodramatic ideals is intriguing, in reality, courtly love is
more of a literary invention. Through works such as ChrГ©tien de Troyes s Lancelot, Guilaume
de Lorris s Roman de la Rose, and Chaucer s Troilus and Criseyde, courtly love has evolved from
an adventurous race towards love into one of the most important literary influences in Western
culture ( Courtly Love ). While the ideals of courtly love were highly accepted and almost
idealized in medieval society, the origin of these ideals remains a mystery because the very
definition of courtly love is debated among modern and ancient literary scholars (Wollock 32).
Since courtly love is not specifically defined, it exists in many spectrums. Gaston Paris, a
French writer and scholar, suggests a worldly idea of courtly love with little attention given to
morals. He defined courtly love by the lover s worship of an idealized lady based on sexual
attraction and desire. Being a controversial idea, an opposite idea of courtly love also exists. C.S.
Lewis, a French theologian and literary critic, presents a conservative idea of courtly love based
on religion and morality. His summation of courtly love includes Humility, Courtesy, Adultery, and
the Religion of Love. Throughout history, many scholars have commented on their concept of
love, and it is safe to say that each scholar responded with a different idea based off his personnel
experiences (Wollock 31). Chaucer also

The dramatic importance of the boxing scene between Eddie and Roldolpho
The story, A View from the Bridge is set in America and it talks about a longshoreman, Eddie. He
has kindly let two of his relatives who are illegal immigrants from Italy stay in his house. The
boxing scene in Act 1, episode 5 of the play is of dramatic importance as it reveals the tension
between Eddie and Rodolpho, one of the illegal immigrants. The scene highlights the different
views and relationship of the two women towards Eddie as he is starting to resemble a tragic hero
and is on his path of self destruction and downfall. It also emphasizes the growing importance of
Marco s role which eventually leads to the climax at the beginning of Act 1.

has done to Rodolpho. From here we can see that Catherine s view towards Eddie is deteriorating
as she acts more rebellious around him while Beatrice still thinks there is hope for Eddie and is

The end of Act 1 closely resembles a Greek Tragedy. In the boxing scene, Eddie begins to make
bold moves and does things that are out of the ordinary. Feints with his left hand and lands with
his right . He starts making mistakes without realizing it as he decides to physically hurt
Rodolpho by punching him. This is just the beginning of his path towards self destruction as he

Marco challenges Eddie by asking him, Can you lift this chair? Beatrice criticizes Eddie for being

The Culture Of Asian American And Being Labeled As An Ethnic
Preface
In this essay, I attempted to lay bare the issues of being an Asian American and being labeled as an
ethnic other in modern America. This label of other causes them to become marginalized and lose
their sense of identity, belonging neither to Western culture nor Eastern culture. In order help stop
this loss of identity in Asian Americans, we must tear down the social construct of the other and
integrate the different cultures into the melting pot of popular culture. Once we have stopped
alienating different cultures, we can then have a moral society that upholds diversity and identity.
The Struggles of the Other
The apparent dominance of White Europeans in America results in a common set of values,
beliefs, and norms that are endorsed by Whites, leading to an America whose vision is filtered
through the lens of the White European perspective. This established vision and power creates the
social construct of the ethnic other. As an ethnic other in America, my analysis incorporates my
personal experiences and the experiences of those around me. In a nation that has a population so
diverse in personal and collective identities, problems regarding morality and culture can arise. In
the America of the past and present, the norm by which all are measured against is that of a
heterosexual White European. This norm creates a conflict with the marginalized groups who wish
to gain acceptance by and into the dominant culture, but are not allowed to do so due to their

The Insignificant Soul in Katherine Mansfield s Miss Brill...
Miss Brill: An Insignificant Soul
Every Sunday, Miss Brill looked forward to a wonderful day in the park. There, she would
secretly dive into the lives of the surrounding human beings, taking in each of their words and
actions and creating a fantasy world all of her own that she was sure she belonged in, but she
was mistaken. Her fantasy world does crumble, and Miss Brill, the protagonist in the short story,
Miss Brill by Katherine Mansfield, soon finds herself in reality. Miss Brill can be clearly seen as a
flat, yet dynamic character, as can be portrayed through her thought transformation.

They were odd, and from the way they stared they looked as though they d just come from dark
little rooms or even even cupboards! Miss Brill is in such denial; she doesn t even realize that she,
like them, is living her own life through these innocent bystanders.
The reason why Miss Brill lives her life through others is because she is scared to take risks. Why
she won t take risks is not given, but most would assume that perhaps something psychologically
damaging had happened to Miss Brill when she was a child or young woman that left her obstinate
as to changing her life. Her life stopped, yet she continued to live through other people around her.
This choice of Miss Brill s has left her lonely and somewhat delusional. It s these two main
characteristics of Miss Brill that make her flat. If the author had perhaps included some
background on why Miss Brill is who she is, the reader may then be able to identify Miss Brill as a
round and complex character, but for now she can only be described in two words: lonely and
delusional.
At the end of the story, Miss Brill is sitting at her usual spot, absorbed in her fantasy and
enveloping the idea that she is an actress in a play, and the park was the stage. And if for some
reason if she weren t to show up,

More Canadians than ever seem interested in getting braces. A beautiful smile is something that
everyone can achieve, and braces are an effective cosmetic dentistry treatment.

with a new level of orthodontic treatment. Instead of getting traditional braces, numerous
individuals are opting for this modern alternative.

While you are considering the pros and cons of conventional braces versus clear aligners, here are

How Do They Work? The aligners come in a series. Each set moves the teeth according to the
calculations the dentist makes. Your dentist will determine your treatment plan based on the
position of your teeth, as well as other factors.
3.Which Ways Do They Move? The aligners might move your teeth in a vertical or horizontal
direction. They may even rotate the teeth slightly. The direction in which they shift your teeth will
depend on their current position.
4.Who Should Get Them? Generally, InvisalignВ® works best for adolescents and adults. The
aligners require a close fit, and that may not be ideal for a child whose teeth and mouth are still
forming and growing.

Copyright Laws Protect Intellectual Property
Copyright laws are intended to protect the intellectual properties of writers, musicians, artists, and
others. In order for a work to be copyrightable, it must be both tangible, or fixed, and original.
There have been many changes made to copyright law throughout time, however, each change has
been made in order to further protect a person s intellectual property. In order for a work be eligible
to be copyrighted it must fall into one of seven tangible or fixed categories. These categories
include literary works, audio visual works, sound recordings, musicals, pantomimes or
choreography, pictorial/graphic/sculptural representations, and dramatic works. Architectural works
became copyrightable in 1990. There are also several things that cannot be copyrighted. These
limited things include titles and names, ideas, works by the United States Federal government,
works without authorship or facts, and fashion. A copyrightgives the copyright holder exclusive
rights to produce copies of their work and sell those copies, to import and/or export the work, to
create derivative works based upon the original work, to perform or display the work in a public
forum, to transmit or display their works via radio or video, and to transfer these aforementioned
rights as whole or in part, to others. Additionally, it should be noted that derivative works
subsequently acquire a new copyright that is not attached to the original work. In 1995, a sixth
exclusive right was included; the right to

The Time Machine by H.G. Wells Essays
The Time Machine by H.G. Wells
In this essay I am going to discuss Wells use of contrast in the Time Machine. This will include
contrast from the Victorian era to the future era, but also contrast in other sections. During a lot of
the book contrast is based on revealing intelligence and general lack of it. It is also shown as what
the time traveller thinks will happen and what actually does happen. A lot of these contrasts are
quite regularly compared to the contrast of dark and light.
From the first page of the book we can even get a hint that the time traveller is quite arrogant, he
thinks his intelligence is better than the others in his presence, Expounding a recondite matter to us.

To relish beliefs of trickery he uses the psychologists finger to press the button. As the machine
went into the future or past it blew a candle out. This is another reference to fire. There is also
imagery involved of light and darkness as well as there been foreshadowing irony. This chapter
also contains contrast of knowledge and ignorance. Knowledge of the time traveller understanding
what is going on and ignorance of the people watching refusing to believe.
lights a spill at the fire. This is how Wells has shown that the audience believe what he is saying.
When he takes the audience to look at the real version of the time machine he takes a lamp with
him, this once again shows a positive status of intelligence in that the time traveller knows what he
is talking about, although on the way down the dark corridor it does flicker which shows some
doubtfulness.
We see some foreshadowing irony almost straight away in chapter three. As soon as the time
traveller returns the first thing he asks is for them to save a bit of mutton. He s starving for some
meat. As we find out this is quite ironic as when he travels into the future he does not eat any meat.
This is because no one but eloi and morlock roam the Earth and the eloi only eat fruit. The
morlocks eat eloi. This is also contrast as the time traveller does not agree with how the morlock s
harvest the eloi and

Art Therapy And The Creative Process
What is art therapy and does it really work? When one thinks of a therapist and an artist you think
of two vastly different people. With therapy being a scientific, analytical study and art a very free
and creative one, but when the two are combined they create a strong outlet for a lot of youth.
Physical and mental health are very serious matters and are both subjects that children may find
hard to talk about. Traditional therapy in some cases can have good outcomes, but for children it is
easier to visualize their feelings rather that verbally speaking upon them. Children are considered to
be visual learners and traditional therapy does not communicate the same way art therapycan. Many
studies have shown that introducing art therapy into classrooms and hospitals can improve a child
s physical and mental well being. One may still be wondering what is art therapy? to answer that
question, here is a definition Art therapy is the application of the visual arts and the creative
process within a therapeutic relationship, to support, maintain, and improve the psycho social,
physical, cognitive and spiritual health of individuals of all ages. (Malchiodi, C. (2013).). With all
this in mind it is hard to believe that many still do not look at this form of therapy to be taken
seriously.
To conduct therapy through art you must have an education behind it considering it is a profession
in mental health . Some think that art therapy can be done by any art

Arguments On Human Cloning
Human cloning has been around since 1952 and up to this day, the issues surrounding cloning of
humans remain a hot topic. People are divided on both sides of the controversy and morally the
arguments are broader. The word cloning is mostly used in everyday communication to mean and
represent many different technological procedures. More specifically, cloningis defined as somatic
cell nuclear transfer. Human cloning is a very controversial topic as well as a tremendous
breakthrough in today s technology and science. There have been many experiments on animal
cloning which have been successful, and because of these discoveries, there is a belief that human
cloning would be successful too.
Many individuals argue that each human life is unique and born of a miracle that is beyond
laboratory science. A fundamental argument is that cloning is ethically wrong, and many
religious groups have rejected it saying that cloning is equivalent to playing God . And cloning
goes against these certain religions because they believe only God has created life and its
various forms in nature, and humans should have no right to act like God . And many others
argue that human cloning should continue for many reasons. One of them being that cloned
humans embryos would make research into genetics and genetically related diseases and their
preventions or treatments, much easier, as well as cheaper. Embryo cloning has also been seen
as a potential treatment for infertility when in vitro fertilization is not available. And this can
occur when parents are infertile, or when both or one of the parents harbor a genome coding for
certain undesirable traits or beliefs. Cloned embryos tissues could be used for the replacement of
lost or diseased tissues. Some experts believe that embryo should not require any moral
consideration. Reason being that they believe at the stage an embryo is cloned, it is basically just a
bunch of cells that contain DNA, which are considered no different than the millions of skin cells
we shed daily. At that stage, embryonic cells should not be considered equivalent to human beings
because it does not have any self awareness, memory, feelings, thoughts, organs, legs, arms, etc.
However, adult cloning might be

Results indicated that children with ASD had more social skills challenges according to all raters

influence Jane Eyre s choice of whom she shall marry. In Jane Eyre, St. John Rivers and Rochester
have contrasting personalities which help Jane Eyre determine who she should marry. St. John
Rivers is cold, hostile, and austere. While describing St. John Rivers, Jane Eyre says, To me he

him and his mission trip to India. This shows that he is not open to the ideas and feelings of

can be portrayed as a strength because he helps others around the world by going on missionary

Gateshead and telling Rosamond Oliver how he feels, he leaves on a missionary trip to India
because he believes she is not suited to be a missionary wife. His devotion to God causes St. John

The Process of Fred Meyer s Organizational Structure Selection Introduction According to Bateman

Teaching Phonics Essay
Phonics is described as understanding letter sound relationships, as well as larger letter pattern
/sound pattern relationships (Ruddell, 2009). Though in my opinion there is a lot more to phonics
than this. There are several aspects to phonics, different types of phonics, negatives to the idea,
and several ways to teach it. In this paper I will address all of these based on research I found, the
discussion I had with my peers, and my own opinion. There are different aspects to phonics that
should be taken into account by teachers. The first is how important phonics is to children. It is
said that both phonics and fluency need to be taught, practiced, and nurtured in the earliest stages of
reading instruction and provided to students at... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This means that they need to have to know effective ways to teach it and how to use the various
types, which will be talked about in this paper. There are several different types of phonics but
the two main types are implicit and explicit (Ruddell, 2009). The implicit approach, or analytic,
is when the teacher teaches the relation between sounds and letters in the context of the word it
is found in. This means you are looking at the whole word and not isolating sounds. The explicit
approach, or synthetic, approach is the opposite of the analytic approach. Instead of looking at
the word as a whole, the teacher looks at each individual sound (Ruddell, 2009). From what I
know I believe that both of these need to be brought into the classroom. It is important for the
child to know each sound so they are able to sound out unfamiliar words in their readings but it
is also important for them to be able to recognize a word in context so they can identify words
easily and quicker. In my experience in classrooms I have noticed the different ways these
approaches were used. In my kindergarten placement the teacher usually used the explicit
approach. Each day we would concentrate on two or three letters and the sounds they made. We
would practice the pronunciation and read a poem or sing a song with the letter in it. In my
second grade class the teacher had a very different way. She would have the children look at the

The Association Between Primary And Secondary Psychopathy...
This study used a correlation design to investigate the association between primary and secondary
psychopathy and cognitive empathy. 452 first year psychology students completed Levenson, Kiehl
and Fitzpatrick s (1995) Levenson self report Psychopathy scale (LSRP) and Baron Cohen,
Wheelwright, Hill, Raste and Plumb s (2001) Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET). A
significant negative correlation was found between primary psychopathyand empathy while the
correlation for secondary psychopathy and empathy was insignificant. From this it can be
concluded that primary psychopaths are worse at empathising than secondary psychopaths.
Association between Primary and Secondary Psychopathy and Cognitive Empathy
Psychopathy is a disorder which can be split into two subtypes, primary and secondary. Primary
psychopathy is typified by callous, manipulative, selfish and untruthful behaviour (Karpman, 1948,
as cited in Levenson, Kiehl Fitzpatrick, 1995). Secondary psychopathy is associated with anxiety,
introversion, low self esteem and moodiness (Blackburn Fawcett, 1999 as cited by Ali Chamorro
Premuzic, 2010). Cognitive empathy is described as the being able to understand and infer
emotions of others (Joliffee Farrington, 2004 as cited by Ali Chamorro Premuzic). Understanding
the association between Psychopathy and Empathy is an area of interest as it provides insight on
how to effectively rehabilitate psychopaths; if they are showing the

Attic Vases In Greek Art
The starting point for Mythical Narrative Art was around 700 BC. This was when the Attic vases
began to appear with depictions of myths on the vases. Around 323 BC is when Attic vases used
to depict myths stopped being produced. With the discontinuing of the vases it is said to be the
end of the Greek Narrative Art. The vases are not the only reason 323 BC is the ending period of
Greek Narrative Art. Alexzander the Great s death also signified the end of the Classical period
which was the last period of Greek Mythical Narrative Art. There are three different terms that are

Artists would manipulate the antagonist in a way that was abnormal or unnatural. The optimal
example to use is the scene of Theseus and the Minotaur depicted on an attic vase. The Minotaur
was a being with the head of a bull and the body of a man or known as being part man and part
bull. Because the character of the Minotaur is so outstanding it aids in the telling of the story. The
fourth way to make sure a myth was portrayed correctly was to include an abnormal set of
circumstances that provoked an unforgettable scene. An example of this technique is in a section of
the Odyssey. This is when Odysseus is grasping hold of the under bellow of a ram to escape the
cyclops, Polyphemus. This unusual scene helps this myth become very much unforgettable. The
finale artistry that was used was the clarifications through a mythological series. With this method
the artist would need to illustrate other actions or adventures the character had completed. The
clarifications through mythological cycle can be seen by observing, The deeds of Theseus . This is

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (2005) states Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
experience lower levels of employment, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait adults in 2002 being
more than twice as likely to be unemployed, compared to mainstream Australian adults.
According to international research, there is indication that low socioeconomic status is
associated with poor health and increased exposure to health risk factors (Blakely, Hales
Woodward, 2004; Turrell Mathers, 2000; Carson, Dunbar, Chenhall Ballie, 2007, as cited in
Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2008). Data shows that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
people without completion of education were more likely to habitually smoke, consume high
volumes of alcohol, engage in low levels of exercise and were less likely to eat fruit and
vegetables on a day to day basis (ABS, 2008). Other social influences relating to the issue of poor
health include low income, unhygienic living conditions and remote location (Healey, 2002).
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with low income have little available funds for
purchasing health care and dietary needs and those living in remote areas have restricted access to
health facilities and resources (ABS, 2008; Australian HealthInfoNet, 2013).
From this, it is evident that due to the social status and outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait

  • 2. Native American Boarding Schools During the Westward... Native American Boarding Schools During the Westward Expansion People know about the conflict between the Indian s cultures and the settler s cultures during the westward expansion. Many people know the fierce battles and melees between the Indians and the settlers that were born from this cultural conflict. In spite of this, many people may not know about the systematic and deliberate means employed by the U.S. government to permanently rid their new land of the Indians who had lived their own lives peacefully for many years. There are many strong and chilling reasons and causes as to why the settlers started all of this perplexity in the first place. There was also a very strong and threatening impact on the Native Americans... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These native peoples, first mislabeled as Indians by an explorer named Christopher Columbus, divided themselves into many different tribes, each with its own government, language, traditions and religions. Europeans, who slowly poured into the Indian s land, did not respect the Indians beliefs, interrupted their peaceful life and would do almost anything to get the land to them selves. The settlers also believed the land that both the Indians and the settlers lived on was theirs to themselves. They began to push the Native Americans off of their own land. Many of them fought back to keep their homes, some succeeded, some didn t. By the 1800 s most of the Native Americans signed a treaty with the European American government. The results left the Native Americans on small pieces of land called reservations in exchange for their land and peace. The European Americans promised that they would give the Indians living on the reservations food, water, money and education for the children. Most of these promises were not kept. White man s schooling of the Native Americans helped cause the disintegration of the beliefs, customs and ways of life of the natives residents of Turtle Island . One of the sources that helped their culture vanish, not completely, were the Native American boarding schools. The boarding schools put the Native Americans through so much pain, ... House Hunters is a strong reflection of society in several ways, the first being our society today is okay with making purchases on debt. The mortgages put up by those who decide to purchase these homes, especially in these episodes reflect the attitude of today which is purchase now and pay it off later. By using credit to purchase something now and pay for it later, we have created a debt society in which we live in today. (Walsh, 1) House Hunters and HGTV didn t hesitate to respond to this though, rather they confirmed that the searching was staged telling EW that the, pursuit of a perfect home involves big decisions that usually take place over a prolonged period of time more time than we can capture in 30 minutes of television. • 5. Subtlety and Psychology in The Screwtape Letters by C.S.... The book, The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis, shows how Screwtape uses subtlety and psychology when he is tempting human beings into sin. He plays with the patient s imagination, emotions, will, and intellect. Also, he shows great shrewdness when encouraging sin that does not appear to be sin. Screwtape shows effective psychologyin encouraging the patient to displace intellect and will in prayer with imagination and emotion, and he shows subtlety in encouraging gluttony of delicacy, pridein humility, and superiority in being part of an elite Christian social circle. Screwtape uses psychology to manipulate the patient into replacing the intellect and will in prayer with imagination and emotion. To remind the patient of his childhood... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, when the patient says, for example, All I want is a cup of tea... and the teeniest bit of really crispy toast, the sin of greed is successfully and unnoticeably committed, because it is used to obtain exactly what one wants. Also, the All I want way of acting can become a hassle to others as it asks of them to go out of their way in order to make something perfect. Moreover, it could jeopardize friendships because perfection can never be attained, and the dissatisfaction resulting from this causes ill temper towards others. Furthermore, while gluttony of delicacy may avoid the sin of gluttony of excess, it produces querulousness, impatience, uncharitableness, and self concern, counteracting the attempt to avoid sin in the first place. Screwtape shows subtlety in encouraging gluttony of delicacy. Smartly using the virtue of humility as a means of sin, Screwtape shows his subtlety when explaining how easily humility can be turned into pride. Once the patient is sincerely acting humble, one has to just enlighten him of his humility, and the prideful thought that he actually was just being humble will spoil the grace filled moment. Also, another way to accomplish twisting the virtue of humility into pride, is to make the patient forget the meaning of humility; make him believe that humility means to think less of his talents and himself; this plants dishonesty into his soul where otherwise virtue could have grown. ... To comprehend complexities involved in value chain a qualitative approach termed value chain analysis approach was used. The things they choose are the things of which they think it can positively change their processes. This function can be measured by mapping the specific targets of firms, companies and governments. Market formation It s almost impossible for new technologies to compete directly from the beginning with incumbent technologies. Therefore these new technologies need niche markets or (governmental) subsidies to exist. This function can be measured by the number of niche markets and the number of subsidies. Resource mobilization There are financial and human inputs necessary to make the other functions working properly. It is hard to measure this function, the best way is to interview different actors and institutions. Creation of legitimacy/counteract resistance to change Often when there is a new technologie an old one has to be overthrown. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is set in an old Puritan society where many people are persecuted for not following religion in any way whether it is a small sin or a large sin. Hester Prynne is the greatest sufferer in the novel because she was publicly humiliated in front of the whole town and has been an outcast for most of her life in that town. The town hates Hester as can be seen by this, This woman has brought shame upon us all, and ought to die (60). People wanting her dead is extremely harsh for having a baby and not saying who the father is when she is protecting him from the harshness of the crowd as well. Hester has been doing a good thing for Minister Dimmesdale so no one knows that he is the father. Keeping the secret from the crowd is difficult for she is suffering because it would be a lot easier if she told who the father is, but she is keeping it in and it is easier to let things out than keep them in. The Minister is never there for his child which can also impact him by making him depressed. Some could say that the Minister is the greatest sufferer because he always has the leech attached to him sucking his life from him. Minister Dimmesdale beckoning for Hester and Pearl to stand with him, Ye have both been here before, but I was not with you. Come hither once again, and we will stand all three together! (181). • 10. Roman Catholic Contemporary Culture Roman Catholic Theology and Contemporary Culture Christy James Grand Canyon University: HTH 469 April 3, 2016 Similar to that of the rise of classical liberal theology and Protestantism, the Roman Catholic Church experienced a change in theological thought. Modernism led to increased biblical criticism and called for Catholic theologies to adapt to the surrounding modern world. Just like those who opposed liberalism, this new way of thinking was also faced with many within the church who opposed it. In 1959 however, John XXIII was elected as the new pope who would set out to bring the church up to speed with the modern world. The result was the formation of the Second Vatican Council also commonly referred to as the Vatican II. Theologians Karl Rahner and Hans KГјng s attendance to the council had a major impact because their ideas helped to advance a Catholic theology which focused on bridging the gap between the church and contemporary culture. • 11. The Introduction of the Electric Guitar According to the Smithsonian Institute, electronic amplification is one of the most successful innovations brought around at the end of the 1930s. The 1920s had a rise in the popularity of dance music, and the recording industry was getting started. This was also the start of the Big Band Era (guitaristsource.com). Guitarmakers started experimenting to develop a new, louder, guitar. Electrical amplification was developed by the radio industry in the 1920s (howstuffworks.com). In 1931, George Beauchamp and Adolf Rickenbacker would go on to develop an electromagnetic pickup they would later use to create the electric guitar. This first model would go on to be called the Frying Pan , because of its resemblance to the cookware. This first model was often played flat on the lap (howstuffworks.com). Eventually, electric guitars began commercial production in the 1930s (Goertzen 435). In 1939, Les Paul, an acoustic guitarist, developed a new type of electric guitar by placing the old pickup on a solid block of wood. This new solid body guitar didn t have the feedback problems that the hollow bodied electric guitars had. Also, it had a greater sustain than earlier models (howstuffworks.com). In order for an electric guitar to work, it needs a pickup and an amplifier. Pickups are electro magnetic pieces on the guitar s body, and they are usually found on the guitar s body in between the bridge and the fretboard. These electro magnets create magnetic fields, which then ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Inside of this class, distinctive examples of leadership behavior are watched and classified as leadership styles. Practicing managers have a tendency to be the most keen on looking into this specific theory in light of the fact that with it leaders can modify their style taking into account the convictions, values, inclinations and society of the association they work for. Leadership can also be conceived as a process where one or more persons influence a group of person to move in a certain direction. The word leadership has been used in various aspects of human endeavor such as politics, business, academics and social works. Messick and Krammer(2004) debated about the degree to which the individual exhibits leadership traits depends not only on his characteristics and personal abilities but also on the characteristics of the situation and environment in which he finds himself. Essay on The Ambiguity in Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown The Ambiguity in Young Goodman Brown The literary critics agree that there is considerable ambiguity in Nathaniel Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown. This essay intends to illustrate the previous statement and to analyze the cause of this ambiguity. Henry James in Hawthorne, when discussing Young Goodman Brown comments on how imaginative it is, then mentions how allegorical Hawthorne is, and how allegory should be expressed clearly: I frankly confess that I have, as a general thing, but little enjoyment of it, and that it has never seemed to me to be, as it were, a first rate literary form. . . . Ambivalence, or the simultaneous and contradictory attitude and/or feelings toward an object, etc., may well be the cause of the extreme ambiguity, doubt, uncertainty in the mind of the reader of Young Goodman Brown. Intentional ambivalence on the part of the author in order not to offend too many is a plausible explanation, as I would see things. Terence Martin in Nathaniel Hawthorne expresses what I interpret as a possible source for the ambiguity in Young Goodman Brown : Assumed in the tale is a radical distinction between dream life and real life; the question proposed to Goodman Brown is into which of these categories good and evil naturally belong. At the outset of the story, Faith asks her husband to postpone his journey until sunrise and sleepin his own bed that night. . . . Mulling over the guilty purpose that has brought him into the forest, Goodman Brown recalls Faith s talk of dreams. . . . In the forest he goes through a dreamlike experience. . . . The devil, furthermore, introduces a further notion of a dream. . . . Thus the counterpoised terms, dream and relity, are shown to depend for their application upon a prior attitude toward the moral nature of the world. For the devil, virtue is a dream; evil, the only reality(91). It would seem that Martin s analysis ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, often referred to as the fire that changed America, was one of the most impactful events of the early 1900s and soon helped set motion into the era of labor reforms. On March 25th, 1911, The Triangle Shirtwaist factory, owned by Max Blanck and Isaac Harris was engulfed in flames. The factory was located in the top 3 floors of the Asch building in Manhattan, New York. The terrific turn of events left firemen unable to rescue those inside. The exits were locked and the fire escapes were unable to support rescue support. This left many people jumping out of the windows to their death along with the multiple deaths already caused by the fire inside the building. Throughout the next few years, New York adopted 36 commission recommendations into law and set a good example for states to continue in its path. These laws and regulations had immense amounts of impacts on the way workplaces began to change. • 18. Double Use Of Performative Essay This paper will compare the use of the performative two poems: The Lake Isle of Innisfree by W. B. Yeats and Digging by Seamus Heaney. Both these poems will be analyzed individually and in comparison with one another on several themes, being performativity and desire. The main subject is how desire is expressed through the performative in both poems. First, a brief explanation of the performative as defined by Bennett and Royle. A performative is a statement which constitutes an action, thus it does not only describes an action but also preforms the action. An utterance as I now pronounce you husband and wife , spoken in the right conditions, is not only a statement, it also connects two people in marriage. Hence, literary texts can be considered... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even (or especially) with its title, a literary text has begun to promise. (Bennett Royle 2016. 313). This quote of Bennett Royle can be applied to the title of Heaney s poem. The poem starts off with a performative, namely its title, and hereby promises that the poem will dig. And digging is exactly what the poem is doing the whole time. The performative act of the poem is that the speaker is digging throughout it, but rather than digging with a spade, he is using his pen to do it. The poem expresses the speaker s desire to keep digging, like his father and grandfather did, but he wants to do it in a different way. That he is not going to dig with a spade, becomes apparent in the last two lines of the poem The squat pen rests. I ll dig with it. (Heaney 1966, 2953) . Furthermore, the last line is actually a performative: he is not merely stating it, but he will actually do it. On the second line, Heaney refers to his pen as a gun: The squat pen rests; snug as a gun. (Heaney 1966, 2953). It demonstrates that he does not see his pen as just a pen , but as his instrument, his weapon. By choosing his pen, Heaney is not digging in the sense of unearthing or burying. The act of digging also means the act of remembering, this will be further explained later in this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analyzing Dijkstra s Letter Essay Critically Analyzing Dijkstra s Go To Statement Considered Harmful Recognizing the argument, determining the types of reasoning used, and identifying logical fallacies are important aspects to critically analyzing information. The paragraphs that follow provide a critical analysis of Edsger Dijkstra s famous letter, Go To Statement Considered Harmful . Critical Analysis Recognizing the Argument In 1968, Edsger Dijkstra wrote a letter to the editor of Journal of the ACM entitled Go To Statement Considered Harmful . In his letter, he insisted that the future of programming would require a structural approach. Prior to this time, programmer s use of the go to statement was conventional. Dijkstra argued that the usage of the go to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He argued that if he were to stop a program at an arbitrary place in time that it was of the utmost importance for the programmer to know exactly how his program reached that point and that it is duplicable. When an unstructured go to statement is used, it can allow the execution of the program to withdraw prematurely from a loop before it finishes completing. It also, can allow the program to arbitrarily jump into a loop that has already initiated the process of iterating, thus causing the programmer to have difficulty identifying a definitive answer to what the variables actually represent at that specific time (Tribble, 2005). Dijkstra described, The unbridled use of the go to statement has an immediate consequence that it becomes terribly hard to find a meaningful set of coordinates in which to describe the process progress (Dijkstra, 1968, p.147). Due to his discoveries, Dijkstra argued, The go to statement as it stands is just too primitive; it is too much an invitation to make a mess of one s program (Dijkstra, 1968, p.147). Determining Types of Reasoning Dijkstra used inductive reasoning as a way to present his arguments against the go to statement. Inductive reasoning is an argument in which the premises claim to support the conclusion in such a way that, if the premises are assumed to be true, then (based on that assumption) it is probable that the conclusion is true (Herms, 1984). Perhaps the most obvious occurrence of female body harm in the fashion industry is a result of fashion modeling. An up close look into the modeling industry as a microcosm of the fashion industry reveals the severe objectification and commodification of fashion models for the sake of consumption. The modeling industry has created a culture of exclusion across genders and races. Author Ashley Mears (2010) critically analyses the fashion industry, and how it influences production of culture and beauty ideals around the world. The modeling world is extremely female dominated, and the women who participate are continually commodified as they are used as a means to promote and disseminate ideas of how women should look, (p. 23). Because consumption is valued so in today s society, the model is employed based on her perceived ability to sell a product. The clothes she is hired to wear and the beauty ideal that she is helping sell are more important than her humanity, and she becomes dehumanized. Clothes take on such utmost importance that models are and should be mere clothes hangers, with perfectly discrete bodies that will display the clothes but not detract from them, (Mears, 2010, p. 35). Dorian Gray was a handsome and wealthy young gentleman who became extremely concerned about preserving his beauty and to pursue his own pleasure above all else after he became influenced by the teachings of Lord Henry. There were moments when he looked on evil simply as a mode through which he could realize his conception of the beautiful. (ch.11) his obsession with beauty drives him to commit serious crimes such as the murder of his friend Basil and the contribution to the deaths of other people such as the suicide of his beloved Sibyl Bane whom Dorian left broken hearted. This seemingly clichГ© finale encompasses all the ideals of courtly love, which began in the Medieval Period and still exists today. While these ideals were prevalent in medieval society, they still existed with much controversy. Geoffrey Chaucer, a poet of the period, comments on courtly love in his work The Canterbury Tales. Through the use of satiric elements and skilled mockery, Chaucer creates a work that not only brought courtly love to the forefront of medieval society but also introduced feministic ideals to the medieval society. At times, Chaucer even makes readers question his beliefs by presenting contrasting elements of principle... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While this idea of daring exploits and melodramatic ideals is intriguing, in reality, courtly love is more of a literary invention. Through works such as ChrГ©tien de Troyes s Lancelot, Guilaume de Lorris s Roman de la Rose, and Chaucer s Troilus and Criseyde, courtly love has evolved from an adventurous race towards love into one of the most important literary influences in Western culture ( Courtly Love ). While the ideals of courtly love were highly accepted and almost idealized in medieval society, the origin of these ideals remains a mystery because the very definition of courtly love is debated among modern and ancient literary scholars (Wollock 32). Since courtly love is not specifically defined, it exists in many spectrums. Gaston Paris, a French writer and scholar, suggests a worldly idea of courtly love with little attention given to morals. He defined courtly love by the lover s worship of an idealized lady based on sexual attraction and desire. Being a controversial idea, an opposite idea of courtly love also exists. C.S. Lewis, a French theologian and literary critic, presents a conservative idea of courtly love based on religion and morality. His summation of courtly love includes Humility, Courtesy, Adultery, and the Religion of Love. Throughout history, many scholars have commented on their concept of love, and it is safe to say that each scholar responded with a different idea based off his personnel experiences (Wollock 31). The dramatic importance of the boxing scene between Eddie and Roldolpho The story, A View from the Bridge is set in America and it talks about a longshoreman, Eddie. He has kindly let two of his relatives who are illegal immigrants from Italy stay in his house. The boxing scene in Act 1, episode 5 of the play is of dramatic importance as it reveals the tension between Eddie and Rodolpho, one of the illegal immigrants. The scene highlights the different views and relationship of the two women towards Eddie as he is starting to resemble a tragic hero and is on his path of self destruction and downfall. The end of Act 1 closely resembles a Greek Tragedy. In the boxing scene, Eddie begins to make bold moves and does things that are out of the ordinary. Feints with his left hand and lands with his right . He starts making mistakes without realizing it as he decides to physically hurt Rodolpho by punching him. This is just the beginning of his path towards self destruction as he makes his fatal flaw later on in the play. The other characters in the play are all slowly turning against him. • 40. The Culture Of Asian American And Being Labeled As An Ethnic Preface In this essay, I attempted to lay bare the issues of being an Asian American and being labeled as an ethnic other in modern America. This label of other causes them to become marginalized and lose their sense of identity, belonging neither to Western culture nor Eastern culture. In order help stop this loss of identity in Asian Americans, we must tear down the social construct of the other and integrate the different cultures into the melting pot of popular culture. Once we have stopped alienating different cultures, we can then have a moral society that upholds diversity and identity. The Struggles of the Other The apparent dominance of White Europeans in America results in a common set of values, beliefs, and norms that are endorsed by Whites, leading to an America whose vision is filtered through the lens of the White European perspective. This established vision and power creates the social construct of the ethnic other. As an ethnic other in America, my analysis incorporates my personal experiences and the experiences of those around me. In a nation that has a population so diverse in personal and collective identities, problems regarding morality and culture can arise. In the America of the past and present, the norm by which all are measured against is that of a heterosexual White European. In order for a work to be copyrightable, it must be both tangible, or fixed, and original. There have been many changes made to copyright law throughout time, however, each change has been made in order to further protect a person s intellectual property. In order for a work be eligible to be copyrighted it must fall into one of seven tangible or fixed categories. This will include contrast from the Victorian era to the future era, but also contrast in other sections. During a lot of the book contrast is based on revealing intelligence and general lack of it. It is also shown as what the time traveller thinks will happen and what actually does happen. A lot of these contrasts are quite regularly compared to the contrast of dark and light. Knowledge of the time traveller understanding what is going on and ignorance of the people watching refusing to believe. lights a spill at the fire. This is how Wells has shown that the audience believe what he is saying. When he takes the audience to look at the real version of the time machine he takes a lamp with him, this once again shows a positive status of intelligence in that the time traveller knows what he is talking about, although on the way down the dark corridor it does flicker which shows some doubtfulness. We see some foreshadowing irony almost straight away in chapter three. As soon as the time traveller returns the first thing he asks is for them to save a bit of mutton. He s starving for some meat. As we find out this is quite ironic as when he travels into the future he does not eat any meat. This is because no one but eloi and morlock roam the Earth and the eloi only eat fruit. Physical and mental health are very serious matters and are both subjects that children may find hard to talk about. Traditional therapy in some cases can have good outcomes, but for children it is easier to visualize their feelings rather that verbally speaking upon them. Children are considered to be visual learners and traditional therapy does not communicate the same way art therapycan. Many studies have shown that introducing art therapy into classrooms and hospitals can improve a child s physical and mental well being. One may still be wondering what is art therapy? to answer that question, here is a definition Art therapy is the application of the visual arts and the creative process within a therapeutic relationship, to support, maintain, and improve the psycho social, physical, cognitive and spiritual health of individuals of all ages. People are divided on both sides of the controversy and morally the arguments are broader. The word cloning is mostly used in everyday communication to mean and represent many different technological procedures. More specifically, cloningis defined as somatic cell nuclear transfer. Human cloning is a very controversial topic as well as a tremendous breakthrough in today s technology and science. There have been many experiments on animal cloning which have been successful, and because of these discoveries, there is a belief that human cloning would be successful too. Many individuals argue that each human life is unique and born of a miracle that is beyond laboratory science. A fundamental argument is that cloning is ethically wrong, and many religious groups have rejected it saying that cloning is equivalent to playing God . And cloning goes against these certain religions because they believe only God has created life and its various forms in nature, and humans should have no right to act like God . And many others argue that human cloning should continue for many reasons. One of them being that cloned humans embryos would make research into genetics and genetically related diseases and their preventions or treatments, much easier, as well as cheaper. Embryo cloning has also been seen as a potential treatment for infertility when in vitro fertilization is not available. And this can occur when parents are infertile, or when both or one of the parents harbor a genome coding for certain undesirable traits or beliefs. Cloned embryos tissues could be used for the replacement of lost or diseased tissues. Some experts believe that embryo should not require any moral consideration. Reason being that they believe at the stage an embryo is cloned, it is basically just a bunch of cells that contain DNA, which are considered no different than the millions of skin cells we shed daily. At that stage, embryonic cells should not be considered equivalent to human beings because it does not have any self awareness, memory, feelings, thoughts, organs, legs, arms, etc. However, adult cloning might be ... There are several different types of phonics but the two main types are implicit and explicit (Ruddell, 2009). The implicit approach, or analytic, is when the teacher teaches the relation between sounds and letters in the context of the word it is found in. This means you are looking at the whole word and not isolating sounds. The explicit approach, or synthetic, approach is the opposite of the analytic approach. Instead of looking at the word as a whole, the teacher looks at each individual sound (Ruddell, 2009). From what I know I believe that both of these need to be brought into the classroom. It is important for the child to know each sound so they are able to sound out unfamiliar words in their readings but it is also important for them to be able to recognize a word in context so they can identify words easily and quicker. In my experience in classrooms I have noticed the different ways these approaches were used. In my kindergarten placement the teacher usually used the explicit approach. Each day we would concentrate on two or three letters and the sounds they made. We would practice the pronunciation and read a poem or sing a song with the letter in it. This study used a correlation design to investigate the association between primary and secondary psychopathy and cognitive empathy. 452 first year psychology students completed Levenson, Kiehl and Fitzpatrick s (1995) Levenson self report Psychopathy scale (LSRP) and Baron Cohen, Wheelwright, Hill, Raste and Plumb s (2001) Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET). A significant negative correlation was found between primary psychopathyand empathy while the correlation for secondary psychopathy and empathy was insignificant. From this it can be concluded that primary psychopaths are worse at empathising than secondary psychopaths. Association between Primary and Secondary Psychopathy and Cognitive Empathy Psychopathy is a disorder which can be split into two subtypes, primary and secondary. Primary psychopathy is typified by callous, manipulative, selfish and untruthful behaviour (Karpman, 1948, as cited in Levenson, Kiehl Fitzpatrick, 1995). Secondary psychopathy is associated with anxiety, introversion, low self esteem and moodiness (Blackburn Fawcett, 1999 as cited by Ali Chamorro Premuzic, 2010). Cognitive empathy is described as the being able to understand and infer emotions of others (Joliffee Farrington, 2004 as cited by Ali Chamorro Premuzic).
