STONE TO MARBLE
JASHANJIT KAUR PARNEET SINGH
INTRODUCTION
JAHANGIR
The fourth mughal ruler, jahangir, was a succeeded by
the famous akbar the great. jahangir was a known for his
ambivalent stance on religion and his love for art. like
most mughal rulers, jahangir has given india few of the
most iconic structures that have lasted the centuries
without losing their glory.prince salim succeeded to the
throne on thursday, 3 november 1605, eight days after his
father's death.

AKBAR THE GREAT AND JAHANGIR
ARCHITECTURAL DIFFERENCES
-Comparison with the ceaseless architectural
activity that was maintained during the greater
part of akbar's reign, the period of the rule of
his son and successor, jahangir, was, in the
field of the building art relative uneventful.
-Jahangir was more into art related to islam
and making gardens.
-Hismost remarkable buildings of the Mughal
period was produced during the earlier years
of Jahangir's reign, and one in which he was
constrained to take a certain amount of
personal interest.
AKBAR JAHANGIR
MAUSOLEUM OF AKBAR THE GREAT
MAUSOLEUM OF AKBAR THE GREAT
Compared with the tomb of Humayun for
example, monument to his years earlier, Akbar's
mausoleum is an architectural retrogression, but
on the other hand one of the chief objects of its
creators was obviously the production of an
original composition, a departure from the
conventional domed structure which had hitherto
prevailed. Such an ideal was proof that the art
was at least a living one and not lacking in
movement, but those concerned did not appear
to realize that originality. unless it is combined
with correct vision and the application of right
principles, is not likely to result in an entirely
satisfying work of architecture. Five storied
structure.
MAUSOLEUM OF AKBAR THE GREAT
1.They wanted to make the mausoleum on a large scale as its perimeter walls enclose a garden of great size,
while the tomb building in the centre is in plan a square of 320 feet side with a total height of over 100 feet.
-In the middle of each side of the outer enclosure wall is a gatehouse, three of these being false doorways
added for symmetry, but that on the south is the main entrance.
2.All these gateways are sufficiently imposing to form minor monuments in themselves, particularly the one
comprising the entrance as this is a structure of exceptional elegance, ornamentation added to every corner
3.Entering through this portal the plan of the ornamental gardens leading up to the central structure,
although partly obliterated, may still be determined, its arrangements showing how the garden designer and
the builder collaborated with the object of coordinating each element in order to produce an unified
composition.
4.The tomb building in its general outlines takes the shape of a low truncated pyramid, built up in three
stories, these consisting of, first, a massive terrace comprising the basement, above this an orderly
arrangement of red sandstone pavilions in three tiers farming the middle portion, and crowning all an open
court, surrounded by a marble screen producing the uppermost story.
5.The basement or ground story is a superb conception, over 300 feet side and 30 feet high, having a series
of arches recessed within its four sides.
6.Interposed in the centre of each of these sides rises a tall rectangular structure, containing an arched
alcove, while above the parapet of this feature is a graceful marble kiosk breaking the skyline in an effective
manner.

MAUSOLEUM OF AKBAR THE GREAT
-There were in total 11 arches on the screen 10 small comprising 5 on each side and 1 big arch.
-Alcoves present throughout the interior.
-Turning now to the uppermost story of Akbar's mausoleum this crowning feature presents a marked contrast
to the rest of the building as it is all composed of white marble.
-A massive structure with a solid projecting cornice, its appearance is lightened by being contained within a
range of delicately perforated screens while above each corner rises a tall and graceful kiosk.
-The interior of this story is an open court surrounded by areaded cloisters, with an exquisitely carved cenotaph
occupying the centre.
-This mausoleum is one of the most ambitious productions attempted by the Mughals, yet although a superb
effort the result is architecturally ineffective as it lacks substance and volume as well as the qualities of unity
and definition.
-In these defects, and equally in its merits, there seems reflected that artistic but irresponsible nature of the
monarch under whose direction the creative part of the monument took form.
-In many respects the unroofed terrace and its refined treatment is an appropriate finish to the building.

THE TOMB OF SHAHENSHAH JAHANGIR
THE TOMB OF JAHANGIR
-Jahangir’s son shah jahan built the mausoleum 10 years after his
father's death.
-Construction of the mausoleum lasted 10 years, from 1627 to 37,
-On the other hand, most historians believe his wife noor jahan had more
influence over the construction of this tomb complex.
-The structure stands in a square enclosure of 540’ side, with red
sandstone gateways.
-Located in shahdara bagh in lahore, pakistan, along banks of ravi river.
-The place was chosen for jahangir tomb because jahangir along with
his wife nur jahan was in love with the place at the time they were living in
the city.
-Occupies the centre of an immense garden
-Square in plan
-Over 1500 feet side
-Enclosed by a high brick wall with a gateway in the middle of each side.
-This garden is one of the largest as it is divided up to 16 equal squares
by means of paved causeways, while a fountain & ornamental pool were
placed at each intersection. SITE PLAN

-The entrance to the tomb is
through 2 massive gates made
of stone and masonry.
-Both the gateways face each
other in the opposite direction in
the north and south directions of
the mausoleum.
-After the entrance, you will
reach Akbari Sarai squared
enclosure. It further leads to
another enclosure towards the
western side which enables the
visitors to have a full view of the
gardens. Then further down are
the bricked canals in which a
number of fountains were there
but ruined completely a few
years back.

dura and the first tomb to be built on the banks of the
yamuna.
-Also known as ‘baby taj mahal’.
-The star features of the tomb are the marble
screens, pietra dura artwork and the tomb chamber
itself
Islamic style of architecture
The use of arched entrances, octagonal shaped
towers or minarets, use of exquisitely carved floral

architectural works of jahangir

  • 2. INTRODUCTION JAHANGIR The fourth mughal ruler, jahangir, was a succeeded by the famous akbar the great. jahangir was a known for his ambivalent stance on religion and his love for art. like most mughal rulers, jahangir has given india few of the most iconic structures that have lasted the centuries without losing their glory.prince salim succeeded to the throne on thursday, 3 november 1605, eight days after his father's death. FAMOUS BUILDINGS -AKBAR’S MAUSOLEUM -TOMB OF JAHANGIR -TOMB OF ITMAD-UD-DAULAH
  • 3. AKBAR THE GREAT AND JAHANGIR ARCHITECTURAL DIFFERENCES -Comparison with the ceaseless architectural activity that was maintained during the greater part of akbar's reign, the period of the rule of his son and successor, jahangir, was, in the field of the building art relative uneventful. -Jahangir was more into art related to islam and making gardens. -Hismost remarkable buildings of the Mughal period was produced during the earlier years of Jahangir's reign, and one in which he was constrained to take a certain amount of personal interest. AKBAR JAHANGIR
  • 4. MAUSOLEUM OF AKBAR THE GREAT
  • 5. MAUSOLEUM OF AKBAR THE GREAT Compared with the tomb of Humayun for example, monument to his years earlier, Akbar's mausoleum is an architectural retrogression, but on the other hand one of the chief objects of its creators was obviously the production of an original composition, a departure from the conventional domed structure which had hitherto prevailed. Such an ideal was proof that the art was at least a living one and not lacking in movement, but those concerned did not appear to realize that originality. unless it is combined with correct vision and the application of right principles, is not likely to result in an entirely satisfying work of architecture. Five storied structure.
  • 6. MAUSOLEUM OF AKBAR THE GREAT 1.They wanted to make the mausoleum on a large scale as its perimeter walls enclose a garden of great size, while the tomb building in the centre is in plan a square of 320 feet side with a total height of over 100 feet. -In the middle of each side of the outer enclosure wall is a gatehouse, three of these being false doorways added for symmetry, but that on the south is the main entrance. 2.All these gateways are sufficiently imposing to form minor monuments in themselves, particularly the one comprising the entrance as this is a structure of exceptional elegance, ornamentation added to every corner 3.Entering through this portal the plan of the ornamental gardens leading up to the central structure, although partly obliterated, may still be determined, its arrangements showing how the garden designer and the builder collaborated with the object of coordinating each element in order to produce an unified composition. 4.The tomb building in its general outlines takes the shape of a low truncated pyramid, built up in three stories, these consisting of, first, a massive terrace comprising the basement, above this an orderly arrangement of red sandstone pavilions in three tiers farming the middle portion, and crowning all an open court, surrounded by a marble screen producing the uppermost story. 5.The basement or ground story is a superb conception, over 300 feet side and 30 feet high, having a series of arches recessed within its four sides. 6.Interposed in the centre of each of these sides rises a tall rectangular structure, containing an arched alcove, while above the parapet of this feature is a graceful marble kiosk breaking the skyline in an effective manner.

  • 8. MAUSOLEUM OF AKBAR THE GREAT -There were in total 11 arches on the screen 10 small comprising 5 on each side and 1 big arch. -Alcoves present throughout the interior. -Turning now to the uppermost story of Akbar's mausoleum this crowning feature presents a marked contrast to the rest of the building as it is all composed of white marble. -A massive structure with a solid projecting cornice, its appearance is lightened by being contained within a range of delicately perforated screens while above each corner rises a tall and graceful kiosk. -The interior of this story is an open court surrounded by areaded cloisters, with an exquisitely carved cenotaph occupying the centre. -This mausoleum is one of the most ambitious productions attempted by the Mughals, yet although a superb effort the result is architecturally ineffective as it lacks substance and volume as well as the qualities of unity and definition. -In these defects, and equally in its merits, there seems reflected that artistic but irresponsible nature of the monarch under whose direction the creative part of the monument took form. -In many respects the unroofed terrace and its refined treatment is an appropriate finish to the building.
