Use Of Anthropomorphism In Farley Mowat s Never Cry Wolf
Never Cry Wolf , by Farley Mowat, uses a lot of anthropomorphism. We see wolves as bloodthirsty
savages that prey on the weak, cause havoc, and do a lot more evil things just for the fun of it. In
reality, the wolves just do what is needed to survive. Humans hunt mostly for food, but also for
pleasure. The wolves hunt for food, nothing else. The use of anthropomorphism completely adds to
the book by showing how the wolves are not the enemy, more so the humans. In simple terms, Mowat
is not just comparing wolves and humans, but also contrasting. The wolves have a mate as well as the
humans. The wolves mates are for life, unlike the many humans that have gotten divorced. The wolves
are in a pack; humans are in a family. Unlike wolves,

Essay On Super Cam
Bradly VanCamp
Super Cam
Anyone that enjoys football enjoys the excitement that comes with the game. A lot of the excitement
that comes with football is the touchdowns. After touchdowns, it has become customary to celebrate.
These celebrations have become more tame over the years, thanks to Commissioner Roger Goodell
and his anti fun ways. Long gone are the days of using the pylon to play miniature golf or stashing a
cell phone under the goal post and making a phone call. The most extreme celebration one will see
nowadays is a little dance or giving the football to a kid in the crowd. Unfortunately, the media and
many other people are trying to make big deal about Cam Newton celebrating his touchdowns with his
signature superman ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The media does not like the idea of someone other than Tom Brady or Peyton manning dominating the
quarterback position, especially a black quarterback. It is time for the media to move into 2015 like
the rest of the world is.
In order for Cam Newton to get the respect he deserves, the media has to learn to accept that Cam is
here to stay and is an elite talent. How many teams are still undefeated in the NFL this season? There
is only one and it just so happens to be Cam Newton s Panthers. With the season that Cam has had, he
should be a near lock for MVP, but the media still keeps bringing up other names like Tom Brady.
What people fail to realize is that Newton is putting up these numbers with very few receivers. Ted
Ginn is the number one receiver for the Panthers and he has never been more than a number three
option in his career. Newton does have a great tight end in Greg Olson, but for the most part is single
handedly carrying this team with his legs and his arm. It is time for Newton to be put in the positive
spotlight. Super Cam is good for the NFL and good for the African American community. He broke
the mold and proved that an African American can be a great quarterback in the NFL and have a ton of
fun while doing it. Next time you see number 1 flashing that contagious smile and celebrating a big
touchdown, embrace it because we are witnessing something

Prison Reform in America
Prison Reform in America
In the essay Prison Reform in America, Roger T. Pray points out the much attention that has been
devoted to research to help prevent crimes. Showing criminals the errors of their ways not by brutal
punishment, but by locking them up in the attempt to reform them. Robert Pray, who is a prison
psychologist, is currently a researcher with the Utah Dept. of Corrections. He has seen what has
become of our prison system and easily shows us that there is really no such thing as Prison Reform
In Roger Prays essay we see how our prison system has come to where we are at now. He shows how
history of prisons worked and how our basis of the prison system came about over the last 200 years.

Europeans came to visit these institutions with the hope of using the system in their country. By the
mid 1800 s prison everywhere scarcely reflected the basic forms of prison. In the 1830 s, many
prisoners where often leased to private contractors, but was discontinued in the mid 1840 s. In the 19th
century it was seen that the prison system could not reform the prisoners. Citizens lost faith and felt
that there was no cure to society s crime problem.
It is interesting to see how our prison came about. Through the years and centuries we have been
trying to find the right way to deal with criminals. Yes, criminals where dealt with brutally and maybe
too brutal for the crimes committed. Today someone can commit murder and get 25 years. I don t feel
that during these 25 years the criminal will really get reformed. How many prisoners get out of prison
and go back to society as normal people. It seems to me that they usually have been in prison for so
many years they have trouble going back to society. The only way they know how to live is how they
lived in prison. In prison they get a bed to sleep in, food and clothing and they don t have to work hard
for it. So they are quick to commit another crime to go back there. Seeing this happen over and over I
feel that you really can t reform our prisoners or the prisons they are locked up in. In Prays essay we

Skiing Industry Animals
Mark C.J. Stoddart conducted a study about animals presence in skiing industry in his article,
Grizzlies and Gondolas: Animals and the Meaning of Skiing Landscapes in British Columbia, Canada.
When people think of skiing, most of them probably picture snow covered nature, especially
mountains and forest; however, that public perception has been overlooked one thing: animals are also
present as the part of nature (Stoddart, 2011). The subject of this article is to examine three ways in
which animals present in skiing world: animals as symbols of nature in the skiing business,
environmentalists concern about endangered animals as a consequence of expansion of industry, and
interactive interviews with encounters. He selected discourse analysis, field observation, and in person
interview for review and analysis (Stoddart, 2011). Stoddart found that a large number of resorts and
hotels in British Columbia, Canada used animals as their mascots. Most of them were bears, placing
them in front of entrances and websites of their facilities to link skiing landscapes with nature and ...

His effort and intent is to integrate the findings that had already been reported into what he has found
which could be the starting point for future research. Stoddart write, Animals enter skiing discourse as
symbols, shaping the social meaning of skiing landscape. However, embodied bears, birds, caribou
and other animals also shape skiers experience of mountainous nature (Stoddart, 2011). With being
captured at the same frame with animals together is certainly an unusual way to enjoy skiing in nature,
as well as important not to threaten them at risk because they are, as reported in the article, significant

The Country Music Culture
There are thousands of musical cultures that are found and known in this world. Every continent

Zora Neale Hurston Spunk Essay
Throughout history, everyone in the world has had to stick up for themselves at one point, no matter
the situation. Spunk by Zora Neale Hurston was written and published in 1925, this story exemplifies
the importance of sticking up for yourself. It was only the third short story Hurston wrote, but it
prospered. Zora Neale is best known for her works, Their Eyes Were Watching God and Dust Tracks
on a Road, both published in the late 1930s and early 1940s. She was an African American activist
during the Harlem Renaissance who often focused on the African American culture and experiences.
Zora Neale Hurston was born in a small town, Eatonville, Florida, which was one of the first all black
unified communities, her hometown influenced many of her works. Hurston enjoys writing about
anthropology, particularly, African American culture. The short story is about a woman named Lena

anything about it, including her husband; because they are all afraid of Spunk Banks. A giant of a
brown skinned man sauntered up the one street of the Village and out into the palmetto thickets with a
small pretty woman clinging lovingly to his arm (Hurston). This expression conveys feelings of
intimacy because they are in public, but are not afraid to show affection towards one another although
Lena is married. The couple walks around the village with one another because they do not care what
others think of them. This topic builds the gossip in the small village, where everyone is talking about
this affair going on between Spunk and Lena. The idea of ignorance repeats when Lena is unmindful

Chilean Atacama Large Millimeter Essay
The Chilean Atacama Desert is located on the southwest side of South America, is one of the driest
places in the world. Notably, just west of The Andes Mountains lays The Chajnantor plateau, 16,500
feet above sea level, there you will find The Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array. The
Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array is also known as The ALMA. As stated on The
ALMA Observatory website, Chile is now hosting most of the most powerful astronomical ground
based observatories on Earth (almaobservatory). It is considered most powerful because of that size of
the telescope. Just by the title of the telescope one would insist that it was referring to a single

Its purpose was to give earlier astronomers a clearer view that ground based telescopes could not back
then. The light that once was blocked from the atmosphere would now be seen by astronomers with
the help of the orbiting telescope. When I compared the two telescopes the first differences were that
The Hubble Space Telescope was orbiting and space while The ALMA was a ground based telescope.
Certainly there were advantages to both telescopes, one being The Hubble Space Telescope makes a
complete orbit, 353 miles above the surface, around the Earth in 97 mins (Hubblesite). Meanwhile,
The ALMA being ground based collects information while in one location using the earth s own
rotation to see different areas into space. Of course, one would think that a space telescope would be
better the a ground based telescope but they would be wrong. In further research, I found that both
telescopes are reflecting telescopes using a large mirrors to bounce wavelengths to the center of the
telescope and then into instruments the sends the information to certain instruments that makes
images. Also, The ALMA has a clarity that is ten times sharper than The Hubble Space Telescope.

The History and Culture of Black Jews in America Essay
According to the broadest definition, there are approximately 9 million Jewish adults in America. Of
those, 5.3 million are Jewish because they practice the Jewish religion or who have a Jewish parent
and consider themselves Jewish. Non hispanic blacks make up 2% of that population. (A Portrait of
Jewish Americans) Blacks constitute such a small percentage of the Jewish population that they are
often considered to be obviously not Jewish . This was the experience of Rabbi Shlomo ben Levy.In
an article entitled, Who are we? Where did we come from? How many of us are there? , Rabbi Levy
describes his feelings of marginalization triggered by an advertisement for Levy s Jewish Rye. The
advertisement features a black boy eating a sandwich and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Kaye/Kantrowitz 1) Meanwhile, it is not uncommon for black Jews, who usually prefer to be called
Hebrews or Israelites, to describe white Jews as the products of conversion or intermarriage and that
Judaism is the true religion of their African ancestors. (Parfitt 84 88) This dynamic shapes the mutual
mistrust that exists between black Jews in America and the overwhelmingly Ashkenazi majority.
The problem of marginalization began with the waves of Jewish immigrants from Europe who fled the
Russion pogroms and later the Nazis. In their homelands, these people were Jewish, but in America
they had the opportunity to be white. In cementing their status as white, these Amnerican Jews further
alienated the small minority of Jews of African descent and others who do not fit nicely into the white
race group. Despite this, the black Jews of America share a diverse cultural history that is both African
and Jewish.
The Commandment Keepers, are one of the largest and best known black Jewish congregations in
America. (Chireau 25) Their founder, Wentworth Arthur Matthew, is regarded as the first black
American rabbi. Matthew s background is not well documented. From his own accounts he was born
in the West Indies in 1892, the grandson of an Ethiopian Jew, and studied at a number of prestigious
institutions. The congregation he founded remains active and has been an Orthodox Jewish
congregation since it s founding in 1919. (Biography of

Businesses are facing increasing difficulty to recruit both skilled as well as unskilled workers
Evaluation of Market Potential Thailand is facing an increase competition in labour intensive
industries because of growing population at faster pace in neighbouring. To have competitive
advantage, Thailand must improve its quality of education and also develop the necessary skills to
improve the value added chain. The growth of real GDP is expected to range from 4.0% to 5.0% in
medium term. The government is also trying to tackle the increasing differences in the income
distribution to ease the political tensions. Government s increased spending on flood prevention
programme and development of basic infrastructure should drive the economy, at least by the year
2013. Constructions Sectors, building material manufacturers and the banks are likely to benefit from
the government spending plans. It is expected that potential output can rise from 3.5% in 2011 to 5%
in the medium term only if infrastructure is improved and if development potential in the lagging
areas is tapped. Thailand is already experiencing a shift in retail buying habits in urban areas. Buddhist
temples and mosques serves as centre of community life in rural Thai areas, but large cities like
Bangkok have experienced a retail revolution which has witness large department malls and also more
recently hypermarkets which now emerges as primary focus for social as well as community life. The

I do think Lucy Donavan violated the UHD Honesty Policy because she obtained and used
unauthorized material to prepare for her Intro to Politics midterm exam and was not honest in her
glimpse of seeing the major essay topic.
Lucy obtained the midterm exam from the photocopying machine. The definition of obtain in the
Merriam Webster Online Dictionary means to hold on to, or possess. In the case of Lucy she had
possession of the test when she picked it up from the photocopy machine. This fact shows that Lucy
did obtain the exam. The UHD Academic Honesty Section 2.2 labeled Academic Honesty Violations,

untrustworthy. Lucy has shown a lack of being honest.
Others may argue the fact that Lucy did turn herself in which showed that she did have a little honesty
in her however, she did cheat and did not tell anyone about it until after she had did it. Instead of

such as after she saw the exam, while she was walking back to her dorm, when her manager called to

that Lucy did not obtain and use unauthorized material due to the fact that she picked the paper up by

The Dangerous Act Of Loving Your Neighbor
Book Content
What is the stated or implied purpose for writing the book? What evidence does the author use to
support the need for the book? This book needed to be written because...
The introduction chapter in The Dangerous Act of Loving Your Neighbor was helpful for
understanding the book s overall purpose. The purpose of this book can be drawn from the example of
little old Doris who showed exceptional grace and justice when we was unjustly exploited for money
and victimized. The author refers back to Doris story throughout the whole book, helping us see the
real like application. The real life application is why this book needed to be written. While reading this
book, internal changes should be happening; hence, the reflection questions after each important
section. I believe the author wrote this book because through his own experience, he came to know
that there are deep injustices against us and against others in our hearts. The healing can begin once
we have identified those injustices, and repented.
What are the main points the book is attempting to get across? o Human hearts form the seedbed from
which injustice thrives. (pg.16) o We misperceive so many of the realities around us. Our
misperceptions derive from our experiences and environment. They are inevitable, but they are not
excusable. Our misperception of others brings about unauthorized judgment, draws distinction
between us and them , and ultimately fosters injustice in our own hearts.

Summary Of The Movie Doctor Strange
Giselle October 10, 2017 Movie Review Essay FD The movie Doctor Strange is about a
neurosurgeon, named Stephen Strange, who becomes an amazing and powerful hero, after he was in a
car accident that brought serious injury to his hands. The movie opens with a scene of Dr. Strange
performing surgeries with Dr. Christine Palmer, his friend throughout his typical work day. The
importance of these first scenes is to show how important his hands are to him and the people around
him. This scene is also important because it seems as though Strange has a love interest in Christine.
During one of Strange s surgeries he successfully extracts a bullet from a man s brain and afterwards
he is shown celebrating his success in the hallway of the hospital. This scene is relevant because it
shows how much pride Strange has in himself and how much he believes that he can do anything.
When the viewer gets to the beginning of the movie we are shown Strange s extravagant apartment
and the physical things he values. It appears that Strange has a nice life until he gets into a horrendous
car accident while on his way to a party. Strange gets in an accident because he is trying to diagnose a
patient from his car s touch screen and swerves off the side of a mountain. This accident caused
Strange to lose half his function of his hands and he soon becomes frustrated. This new predicament in
Strange s life causes him to look for extreme and experimental ways to try to fix his hands. He

Research Paper On Powerboat Racing
I have a keen interest in all motorsports; I play a lot of motorsport games on PlayStation. I don t get
much time to follow the motorsport statistics and how the real world is doing in the motorsport but I
play a lot of games for example, NASCAR Sprint Cup, Formula One, Moto GP, Need for Speed and
Forza Motorsport. When I visited the drag racing event in Terre Haute, I become more interested in
Drag racing. In some point in my life after finishing up college and having a stable career, I like to get
more involved in F1 powerboat racing in Florida. It is more fun and water motorsport is something
really of my interest.
In general, I like to be involved in all kinds of water sports. Formula one Powerboat racing is my
favorite and the most interesting part which fascinates me about it is the speed on the water. It is the
fast race on the water in the world. According the Formula One H2o website, it states that Powerboats
runs faster than even the formula one race cars and the F1 boats are capable of going from 0 to 160
kilometers per hour in only 4 seconds (F1H2o). It is great as this is independent from anyone else, the
F1 speed boats contend at these velocities without the utilization of brakes or riggings. It is focused,

Some of the most common stimulants are methamphetamine, caffeine, nicotine, cocaine, and Ecstasy.
Methamphetamine is a highly addictive stimulant drug. Its physical effects include disturbed sleep
patterns, Nausea, and Bizarre, erratic, sometimes violent behavior. Methamphetamine increases the
amount of dopamine, which results in increased chemicals in the brain. Methamphetamine is a
dopamine agonist. Caffeine is a CNS stimulant. It is the world s most consumed drug. Some physical
effects include high blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, and hyperglycemia. Caffeine binds to our brain s
adenosine receptors; preventing the chemical from binding with the receptors and making us tired.
(This is what caffeine does to your brain, 2014) Caffeine is a receptor antagonist. Nicotine is a highly
addictive chemical substance present in tobacco. Some physical effects include heart disease, stroke,
and depression. The nicotine molecule is shaped like a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine.
Acetylcholine and its receptors are involved in many functions, including muscle movement,
breathing, heart rate, learning, and memory. They also cause the release of other neurotransmitters and
hormones that affect your mood, appetite, memory, and more. When nicotine gets into the brain, it
attaches to acetylcholine receptors and mimics the actions of acetylcholine. (How Does Nicotine Act
in the Brain? 2015) Nicotine is an agonist to ACH. Cocaine is a highly addictive drug synthetically
derived from coca. Some physical effects of cocaine include increased heart rate, body temperature,
and increased rate of breathing. Normally, dopamine is then recycled back into the transmitting neuron
by a specialized protein called the dopamine transporter. If cocaine is present, it attaches to the
dopamine transporter and blocks the normal recycling process, resulting in a buildup of dopamine in
the synapse, which contributes to the pleasurable effects of cocaine.

The Garden By William Makepeace Thackeray Analysis
The garden straddles the border between the public and the private, the social and the personal, and
the city and the country. It is both man made, yet natural; both intimate, yet open. Hence, the garden,
as a place of such contradictions, becomes a space for William Makepeace Thackeray to facilitate
characters contemplation, pushing the engagement with the dichotomy between nostalgia and
progress.
It is in the Royal Gardens at Vauxhall where William Dobbin s intense desire for Amelia begins to
slowly manifest. As she wanders through the paths of the garden with George Osborne, he becomes
distracted by her, ignoring the gardens that surround him:
[A]nd as he saw that good looking couple, threading the walks to the girl s delight and wonder, he
watched her artless happiness with a sort of fatherly pleasure. Perhaps he felt that he would have liked
to have something on his own arm besides a shawl [...] And the truth is, that of all the delights of the
Gardens; [...] Captain William Dobbin did not take the slightest notice. (Thackeray 63)
This passage, set in a very social engagement it is the evening of an expected proposal sees Dobbin
caught in a moment of disengagement of a private longing for Amelia. Thackeray teases Dobbin s
desires by suggesting that [p]erhaps he felt that he would have liked to have something on his own
arm besides a shawl and going into a lengthy list of all the delights of the Gardens which he ignores
(63). Dobbin, in a sense, becomes withdrawn

The Problem of Poverty in Famine, Affluence, and Morality...
Peter Singer is often regarded as one of the most productive and influential philosophers of modern
times. He is well known for his discussions of the acute social, economic, and political issues,
including poverty and famines. In his Famine, Affluence, and Morality , Singer (1972) discusses the
problem of poverty and hunger, as well as the way this problem is treated in the developed world.
Singer believes that charity is inseparable from morality, and no distinction can be drawn between
charity and duty. The philosopher offers possible objections to his proposition and relevant arguments
to justify his viewpoint. The modern world does not support Singer s view, treating charity as a
voluntary activity, an act of generosity that needs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Singer (1972) is convinced that affluent societies should give away within the limits that do not slow
down their economic and social growth. Here, the concept of marginal utility comes into play.
According to Singer (1972), marginal utility is the level, at which, by giving more, I would cause as
much suffering to myself or my dependents as I would relieve by my gift (p. 241). In other words, it is
a fragile boundary between being a moral person and a person, who makes his dependents suffer for
the sake of saving some distant communities from poverty. Marginal utility is a measure of balance,
which implies that bad things are prevented without causing other bad things to happen. Singer (1972)
does not say that affluent societies should limit themselves to marginal utility, but they should avoid
causing something significantly bad to their families. Certainly, the world presented by Singer (1972)
differs considerably from the real order of things. In the real world, charity is not considered as a
moral duty. Rather, it is a voluntary act of generosity, which is subject to public approval and praise.
This position favors many society members, who can use charity as an instrument of manipulation to
achieve their own purposes. Meanwhile, a consensus is emerging that charity is a negative
phenomenon, which does not allow changing the situation from within. According to BBC (n.d.),
charity deals with the symptoms, rather than causes, of poverty and famines. It

their lives and how they act, for better or worse. Personally, I am not one to be extremely impacted by
events, but some of the events I have experienced really did leave a lasting effect on me as an
individual. Life changing events are not always negative, but in my case the events that changed my
life had not benefited me. I do believe that these events matured me, but I still do feel devastated that

Texas Vs Fort Myers Essay
Florida is known as the Sunshine State. Whereas Texas is the Lone Star state. Both states are complete
opposites, beaches vs cowboys. So which is better, there really isn t a true winner. Both states have
amazing cities. For example, Fort Myers Florida and Porter Texas. Both these cities are good to live
in. Although they both are very similar, one has more activities for you to do and the other is more
calm.
Notably Florida is known for having many glamorous Theme Parks. Fort Myers is positioned just
three hours south from all the big Parks. It doesn t have all the traffic of living in a congested city like
Orlando, but is close enough to be able to leave your house at five or six in the morning and arrive at
Universal studios as it is opening. The closest Theme park to Fort Myers is Busch Gardens. This park

Importance Of Bernini Master Piece
Bernini s Master Pieces
It s impossible to talk about Italian Baroque art without Bernini. Bernini, who is considered the most
important sculptor and one of the most important outstanding architect during the 17th century, still
gives to the world the opportunity to enjoy the most inspiring and wonderful seeing of his artworks
almost three hundred thirty seven years after his dead until now [1]. Many of his artwork can be still
appreciated at the gallery Borghese and other public piazzas, such as Piazza Navona, Piazza Barberini,
and others.
In Piazza Navona can be appreciated the fountain of the four rivers or La Fontana di Quattro Fiumi .

Bernini s style is just recognizable because of his engagement and drama, texture, movement and
naturalism of his artworks, which is completely expressed in the fountain of the four rivers. This
master piece was from the beginning designed and sculpted by Bernini and Bernini s workers. This
was not the case for the fountain of the moor. This fountain, which was originally designed by della
Porta with just a central dolphin and four tritons, lacks detail. If we compared these two fountains we
can noticed that the fountain of the four rivers is carefully made in detailed. It has movement, it
expresses something. Just considering the obelisk surmounted by the dove in the fountain of the four
river makes us realized how passionate was Bernini in his pieces, which is the same detail and
expression that reveals the center master piece in the moor fountain. The difference in technique
between these two fountains as well as the design style between della Porta and Bernini, from what he
modeled to what Bernini s did in the fountain of the four rivers, is just simple, stagnant and not

The Feminist Movement
The feminist movement has been developing its method of solving social and economical issues in
three consecutive waves, from the end of the 19th century till present. Each stage had its benchmarks
and significant shifts in the treatment of women from viewing them as objects and commodity to
perceiving them as citizens in full rights and creators of their own destiny. Gradually, together with the
growth of self consciousness and demand for more rights and freedoms, suffragists and later feminists
managed to secure more legal precedents and norms manifesting and consolidating their
achievements, including the right to vote, to own property and participate in public life. As the number
of these precedents accumulated and their visibility in the legal field became clearer, as their practical
application turned from the exception to a norm, then the issue raised: is the system which needs such
significant amendments viable and whose interest does it represent? As one of the most prominent
spokespersons on the issue, Catharine A. MacKinnon, described it, the existing system of justice and
the power itself attained the male shape; and lack of power and inability to influence the happening
got the female shape. The overall message broadcasted by the society as a whole and the legal field in
particular was that the established state of affairs was normal and universally accepted, and women
should be contended with it, as everyone else was. Everyone else in this case meant the

The Lightning Thief Book And Movie Analysis
Movies are Thieves A common goal of Hollywood productions is to attract a vast audience. In order to
earn mass profits from their movies, directors will change any storyline to create an easy to follow,
action filled success. The Lightning Thief novel, written by Rick Riordan, and The Lightning Thief
motion picture provide excellent examples of how books are morphed into classic, money making
attractions. Even though The Lightning Thief book and movie both share main characters and settings,
the book expresses more detail and educates the audience while the movie focuses more on action and
convenience, allowing for more errors between plots. Action is one of many differences found
between the book and the motion picture. The entire plot of the movie revolves around finding and
fighting for the pearls of Persephone, but in the book, Percy, the main character, receives the pearls as
a gift on behalf of his father for use in a time of trouble. The settings and opponents faced by Percy
and his companions, Annabeth and Grover, are the same: Medusa at the Emporium, Hydra at the
Parthenon replica, and the Lotus eaters at the casino. However, the reward for winning in the book is
survival, not a pearl as portrayed in the movie. Another example is the scene involving Hades
Minotaur. Percy is not an experienced fighter at the beginning of the book; therefore, Percy faints after
taking one of the Minotaur s horns. The movie illustrates Percy as a potentially skilled hero in

Insanity And Detachment Of Order

30 May 2017 Insanity and Detachment of Order
Insanity is a field of behaviours characterized by abnormal mental or behavioural patterns. It may be
apparent as violations of societal norms, including a person becoming a danger to themselves or
others. In modern usage, insanity is mostly seen as a term implying mental instability. Insanity is a
recurring theme in Timothy Findley s fictions. While he does not dispute its existence, the author
brings into question its meaning and its role, as well as the values of the societies that seek to define it.
Findley brings into question the meaning of this theme, both in a narrative context within his books
and as a term in itself and within ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In both cases, the theme of insanity creates a detachment of societal norms. Hooker s hint of insanity
develops at the beginning of the book, when he goes on to describe the conditions in which he lives in,
and goes on to state that his ...house was just on the outskirts of town, unlike the rest of the town s
people. All through the house they closed doors and drew shades, they got dead quiet. That is how his
father liked it after Jessie came home (Findley 9). This life of isolation has already given Hooker the
incentive to detach from society, as he is constantly seen as a character that has trouble with
understanding societal ideals. He is seen as a character who has been forced to detach from society
when his mother Jessie comes home wanting to live in isolation after the miscarriage of her unborn
child; therefore allowing some of his mothers negative behaviours about life to rub off on him.
Through the characterization of Hooker, Findley explores the vice potential of such a subject, who
becomes the servant of destruction of the social structures that produced him. In Julie Salem Wiseman
s essay Insanity Begins at Home: Madness in the Family in Timothy Findley s Last of the Crazy
People, she states that Findley creates a Laingian portrait of how a disordered and degenerate social
reality of which the Winslows especially Hooker are an extreme representation produces subjects who
have not only internalized the social pathology that has formed them but also use the

At what stage does ongoing active monitoring of competitors come into play in the grand scheme of
an SEO campaign?
The digital world can be pretty cutthroat. It s not enough to simply be aware of who your competitors

you to stay competitive, you can critically evaluate what works and what doesn t without needing to

Impact Of Digital Media On Cinema
It is obvious that technological convergence leads to the changes in media production and distribution
(Bolin 2007; Tryon 2009; Dixon Foster 2011). These changes can be observed through the ways films
are promoted and exhibited have also been affected by the use of digital media. The following sections
will provide a detail analysis of these changes.
Tryon (2009) examines the transformation of cinema to the digital form. The proliferation of new
portable technologies sparked the debates about the changes in the film industry. On the one hand,
there are concerns that digital media and home entertainment systems threaten the future of cinema, as
they provide viewers more choices and flexibility in watching movies. On the other hand, media ...

The first thing to consider is the formats of movies. Digital formats have gradually replaced the film
for many reasons: space efficient, inexpensive, immediate and unlimited (Pavlik McIntosh 2014, pp.
223 224). This is because physical films not only cost more but are also inconvenient to print, deliver
and preserve. Meanwhile, the transfer of data by using digital tools is extremely fast and easy, whether
through a computer or via satellite. For example, traditional types of film reels, such as the 35mm or
70mm, have given place for high capacity hard drives (Dixon Foster 2011, p. 22). Pavlik McIntosh
(2014) also emphasize that while the digital data still need to be kept in a physical storage, it is still far
more space saving than that needed by an analog form. Furthermore, it is totally free to duplicate the
digital movies and send them to distributors.
The movie industry, along with other mass media industries, has become more democratized and
fragmented due to the use of digital technology. While the market is still dominated by a few giants,
there are more spaces for smaller players. Retailers like Netflix or Amazon have paved the way for
niche products to be consumed. This is what academics refer to as the long tail, which is the main
focus of Chris Anderson s 2006 book. According to Anderson, our culture has long been obsessed with
a small number of hits popular contents made by powerful companies.

Heroic Qualities Of Odysseus
Homer s epic poem The Odyssey begins by painting Odysseus as a brave and powerful leader and an
impulsive decision maker who over time becomes more intelligent; Homer develops these relatable
and heroic characteristics through detailed imagery and word choice as well as through symbols and
homeric similes which amplify the representation of Odysseus as a normal person as well as a heroic
figure. Odysseus s tendency to succumb to impulsive strokes of curiosity enables readers to relate with
his inner character. The protagonist gives into the natural human curiosity to find and fix one s
weakness. Circe tells him of the sirens who know the secrets of Odysseus s weakness, she also tells
him that listening to their knowledge is unwise and he along with his crew should close their ears.
However, in his impulsivity, Odysseus actually tells his crew to force him to listen while they cover
their ears. Odysseus also shows his impulses in regards to thirst for knowledge when he sends two
scouts to explore the land of the Lotus Eaters, knowing full well that their chance of return is unlikely.
This quest for knowledge could have been in a slower, but more logical and effective way. This shows
how Odysseus can easily succumb to less logical ideas if it is a question of his power or knowledge.
Another constant in his early story is his portrayal as a daring and fearless figure, often taking control
and triumphing over potential threats. Odysseus witnesses two of his shipmates be

The Characters in The Matrix
The Matrix (Wachowski Wachowski 1999) is a battery powering an unending chatter of thought,
images, productions, and discourse. In the film, a stabbing needle penetrates the black plug mounted
on the back of a human skull, and the mind is overwhelmed by the matrix, an extensive simulacral
world that, to its unknowing inhabitants, is in every way the same as reality, and to those merely
passing through, is a sinister, green tinted prison. The film sets, by dialogue and symbolism, a place

The philosophical conventions at play are a string of universalizing contentions about the ways of
Man, Truth, and the World. What is striking in the appropriation of so many minutes of screen time
into rational argument is the theoretical inevitability into which they stumble as if for the first time and
in a serendipitous glee. Is (discussion of) the film finally to be a moment of truth?
It is high time we rid ourselves of the notion that we can somehow free ourselves from illusion (or
from ideology) by recognizing and theorizing our own entrapment within it. Such dialectical
maneuvers tend, ironically, to reinforce the very objects of their critique. They achieve their
explanatory power at the price of transforming local, contingent phenomena into transcendental
conditions or developmental necessities. The self reflexive theorizing that allows us to become aware
of certain structural constraints also ends up echoing and amplifying those constraints, reproducing
them on a larger scale. (Shaviro 11 12)
When Žižek rejoices, inconsistencies are the film s moment of truth (Žižek 12), the recognition of an
inconsistency in the film is the simultaneous codification of consistent principles where what was
present before can be forgotten[1]. The wholism of such maneuvers follows theatrical trailers, wherein

Francis character through the perspectives of other characters. Hemingway develops Francis character
as a man full of shame, cowardice, and bravery by using multiple perspectives as he threads a negative

Topic Sentence: A characteristic of Francis that is developed through the short story is shamefulness.
Example Wilson Perspective: Francis brings shame upon himself when he continually asks Wilson to

Transition sentence: The narrator also contributes to tell about and bring shamefulness into the life of
Francis Macomber
Evidence Narrator:Sometimes Hemingway uses the narrator to further develop characteristics, such as
on page 1, The gun bearers had taken no part in the demonstration.
Explanation: The gun bearers do not verbally bring shame into Francis life, however they do bring
shame into his life by their actions. They brings shame to Francis because they know what really
happened with the lion hunt. The gun bearers not congratulating him for the kill plays a major role in
the story and the unmanliness Mr.Macomber experienced through his life.

shame for Francis because he is constantly looked down from his wife and Wilson. By using multiple
characters to portray this character trait, it further explains and shows the true meaning of this

Furthermore, researchers have developed some newer methods, such as protocol normalization and
distributed firewalls but they have yet to be widely adopted . In addition, because selective data must
be able to pass in and out of a firewall in order for the protected network useful, every attack cannot
be stopped by firewalls. Particular emerging technologies, such as Virtual Private Networks and peer

Like firewalls, if you put intrusion detectors in place as a preventative measure you could be saving
your network from security meltdown. Intrusion detection is when you monitor the happenings of a
network itself and investigate possible incidents or impending threats of computer security policies or
acceptable use policies. After you put intrusion detection and prevention systems in place, it mainly
focuses on recognizing likely incidents, recording data regarding them, remediation, and reporting
them to security administrators. The remediation process use several response techniques, which
involve the IDPSs hindering the attack itself, altering the security environment (e.g., reconfiguring a

Women As An Adult Female Person
Dictionary.com defines woman as an adult female person. This does justice in simple terms but a
woman is much more than simply an adult female person. Women are caregivers and nurturers. We are
strong, independent, protective, and driven. We are the electricity that keeps the lights on and the
washers of the laundry when their children are too lazy to do it (only because we care, not because it is
our duty ). Unfortunately, this is not how women were always seen. We have had to fight hard to get
where we are today, and must continue to fight so we can be somewhere new tomorrow. Women were
seen as housewives, who cooked cleaned, and cared for the children while their husband was bringing
home the bacon. This transferred into the theater as well. Women were expected to always attend with
a male escort to one, keep her safe, as theater could easily turn into a riot, and two because attending
without a man suggested one was a prostitute. The invention of the matinee performance allotted
women the opportunity to attend shows during the day, making it safe from brawls and thieves while
also sparing a woman s reputation. Women s participation in public life increased in the later portion
of the 1800s, majorly due to the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848, and later in the 1920s due to the
Women s Suffrage Amendment of 1920. However, in the 1840s, the Philharmonic took a leap in

There are two different claims: it helps fight dementia and it doesn t help fight dementia. Each side

The Best Athletes Money, Clothes, Cars
Another argument is that these full ride scholarships that are given to the best athletes do not actually
cover all of their expenses. When this happens, schools have boosters. Boosters give the college
athletes money, clothes, cars etc. Example of that is Reggie Bush, running back for the University of
Southern California from 2003 2005. Bush was paid by boosters to attend USC, which violated NCAA
rules. Bush was talked about bad when the violations were revealed and had to return his Heisman
trophy. While Bush actions were clearly wrong and him returning the Heisman trophy was warranted,
its tough to give him much a hard time. At the time, Bush didn t come from much wealth and even
with a full ride football scholarship, he could not cover all of his expenses. Bush s mother was having
trouble paying rent, so a booster at USC offered to pay for his mother s apartment. Bush felt like he
had to take this offer, as there was no other way to make money and pay for his mother s apartment. If
Bush were paid for his participation in the NCAA, then Bush would have not had to violate NCAA
rules. The last and the most important reason to pay college athletes, is that it will ensure that most
college athletes will complete their degrees. Paying student athletes would provide athletes an
incentive to stay in school and complete their degree programs, instead of leaving early for the
professional leagues (Should Student Athletes Get Paid?). If athletes are paid to play,

Procedure:
Obtain a preserved sheep brain from the bucket and place this on a dissection tray.
Examine the outer surface of the brain and locate the dura matter (the outer toughest layer of the
brain).
Remove the dura matter.
Place the brain on dissecting tray and position its ventral surface upward. Identify olfactory nerve,
optic nerves, optic chiasm, pons, medulla oblongata, and spinal cord.
Position the brain with its ventral surface down and identify cerebral hemispheres, cerebral lobes

Annotated Bibliography Of Maririta s Bargain
Annotated Bibliography Gladwell, Malcolm. Marita s Bargain. Collections, edited by Beers, Hougen
Jago et al., Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2015, pp. 3 14. The research paper, Marita s Bargain discusses
how it s difficult to get an education, but putting effort into it will get us where we want to be. All
things considered, were gathered by researcher Malcolm Gladwell, who interviewed students living in
high crime areas. This research paper was intended for adolescents to read. So they can get motivated
and work for a better living and won t live in the conditions they live in now. Similar to Dweck s
article both were concerned about the student s success. Therefore, every chance we get we should
take it. Because chances come very rarely so take them while it lasts. Carol S. Dweck The Secret to
Raising Smart Kids. Collections, edited by Beers, Hougen and Jago et al., Houghton Mifflin Harcourt,
2015, pp. 21 26. The research paper, The Secret To Raising Smart Kids states how a fixed mindset is
an important factor of success. Also, how lack of motivation is committed by parents since they
believe their kids are naturally born smart and if they aren t smart then they won t succeed. Dweck
gathered his information by interviewing university students. This research paper was intended to
engage those people that believe in the belief that children are actually born smart. Dweck s article
differs from Gladwell s because he talks about how the intelligence of students is

Tess Being a Victim of Fate in Tess of the D Urbervilles
The president of the Immortals had done his sport with Tess
In his novel Tess of the d Urbervilles Thomas Hardy expresses his dissatisfaction, weariness, and an
overwhelming sense of injustice at the cruelty of our universal fate disappointment and
disillusionment. Hardy puts out an argument that the hopes and desires of Men are cruelly saddened
by a strong combination of fate, unwanted accidents, mistakes and many sad flaws. Although Tess is
strong willed and is clearly educated emotionally and mentally she soon becomes a victim of fate .
Many people would say that Tess was just unlucky, Had a stroke of bad luck, others would prefer to
differ and argue that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whilst on the other hand Abraham blames it on the blighted star. I would say that there is a sense of
fate in this chapter with the discussions between Tess and Abraham with regard to the stars.
Even though realistically the event is an accident, Thomas Hardy writes in such a way that we are lead
to believe that it is a cruelty of fate rather than a, direct sense of cause and effect . In the result to the
death, Tess feels tremendously guilty; this will make her more susceptible to her fathers wishes and
doings.
Tess is a beautiful young girl who oozes sexuality; however in this novel her beauty does not do her
any good. We can see examples of this in many chapters; in chapter eight we can see that Alec is
driving at a reckless speed to perhaps appear more manly in the company of Tess. Her natural instinct
is to grasp Alec s arm. It seems to me that Alec s intention was to have some type of physical contact
with Tess. However the arm holding was not enough for Alec so he asked her to grab his waist with
the excuse that he couldn t steer with her latching on. Alec uses Tess as a, sexual conquest . If Tess
wouldn t have killed Prince she wouldn t be exposed to such danger with Alec, in fact she wouldn t
even be on the carriage with Alec as she wouldn t have needed to go to

Battle Of Midway Dbq
Sections 2: Investigation
The Battle of Midway was a drastic war between the United States and Japan on the small island of
Midway, Atoll. In the hot, bright summer of June, 1942 had become a grim, dark period. A battle that
brought tides of the attack on both sides due to their past actions such as, when Japan had attacked
Pearl Harbor and now wanted to get more territorial land. And on the other hand America s attack on
Tokyo. Ultimately a surprise attack was staged by the both sides and in the end leading to the victory
of the United States. This battle will forever live in every American heart due to their huge victory.
However, many historians and philosophers state that the Battle of Midway was just won by luck
ignoring the real factors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, to certain extent, they are right. The Americans being able to predict where the Japanese are
going to come from whether southwest or northwest. This lucy decision had changed the whole war.
And in fact the decision of Admiral Fletcher to send the naval force northwest was positively
impactful to the war (Mcgowen 29). Consequently made Americans stand in front of the Japanese. On
the other hand, many historians think that Japanese were the cause of their own destruction. Evidently,
when they attack Pearl Harbor. Japanese knew that there will be revenge for this, but their false
assumption of the United States will not step into war after the drastic loss of the harbor but United
States still came to war. (Symonds 35) Another cause was that the Japanese false assumption that
United States s main battleship, Battleship of Yorktown, was destroyed at Pearl Harbor. They didn t
realize that United States was superior in industrialization and this had repaired their battleship and

Security Risks And Risk Management Process
Abstract:
Protecting the data related to health sector, business organizations, information technology, etc. is
highly essential as they are subject to various threats and hazards periodically. In order to provide
security, the information has to adapt to certain risk analysis and management techniques which has to
be done dynamically with the changes in environment. This paper briefly describes about analyzing
the security risks and risk management processes to be followed for electronic health records to ensure
privacy and security.
Overview of Security Risk Management:
Security is being free from threats. The term can be used with reference to crime, accidents of all
kinds, etc. Security is a vast topic including security of countries against terrorist attack, security of
computers against hackers, home security against thieves and other intruders, financial security
against economic collapse and many other related situations. Security risks are often at the base of
many other risks associated with eHealth. The data present in the Electronic Health Records that are
recorded, maintained or transmitted by the third party devices and so, must be secured in order to
protect the information from breaches such as anticipated threats or hazards. These security measures
must be managed as eliminating all threats is impossible, and so, health organizations will periodically
conduct a risk analysis to determine their possible exposure and find the best way to manage the risks

Introduction
Safety and security is vital, especially for housekeeping and engineering department in hospitality
industry, because both departments comprise working physically and use of equipment which would
increase the risk of accident and injury. In hospitality operation, safety refers to the actual conditions
in a work environment. Security refers to the prevention of theft, fire and other emergencies. (Aleta

Minstrelsy Research Paper
The Complex Nature of Minstrelsy In 1828, a white stage performer named Thomas Dartmouth Rice
became famous for his new song, Jump Jim Crow, which he performed in blackface as Jim Crow, a
primitive, well known black trickster character. Although Rice was not the first man to perform in
blackface, he was the first to so overtly imitate and mock blacks. The Jim Crow routine inspired other
performers to wear blackface and perform as caricatures of blacks in order to degrade them. Due to
Rice, minstrelsy became the prominent American theatrical form. Beginning in the 1840s, minstrel
performances featured both black and white actors. In 1855, many all black groups joined the minstrel
scene. Historians typically portray minstrelsy as an art ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the 1820s, the abolitionist movement was growing, and passionate abolitionists actively fought to
abolish slavery. The creation of minstrelsy was a response to violent anti slavery actions. For example,
a jury indicted four white men in 1822 for telling slaves that they had the right to fight for their
freedom, and three black men published writings in 1829 openly calling for a massive revolt.
Northerners, such as Rice, who was from New York, created minstrelsy to convince the North and its
congressmen to stop fighting for abolition. They believed that holding middle class values, such as a
strong work ethic, patriarchal authority, propriety, and maturity were the markers of deserving
freedom. Consequently, minstrel shows characterized male slaves as submissive, lazy, irresponsible,
immature, and, therefore, unqualified for freedom. Minstrel shows were extremely popular and
performances targeted all socioeconomic groups. Minstrel groups would tour and perform both in
prestigious opera houses and makeshift stages. Thus, whites initially created minstrelsy to convince
the country, specifically the North, of their pro slavery

Example Of A Synthesis Essay
Synthesis Essay Over the years, the main source of media entertainment has changed from radio to
television. This had a massive impact, as it allowed streaming of live news with picture and video.
Such a change was met with high criticism as it allowed for violent and graphic scenes from all
around the world to be shown to the public, many people became fearful of the psychological impact
it might have on not only themselves, but more importantly, their children. Nowadays, the main source
of entertainment, especially for the younger generation, can be summarized under the broad term of
video games. These games allow simulations of different scenarios to be interacted with by a player.
Such scenarios can also depict violent acts, brutal behavior ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Henry Moore Seated Woman Analysis
Henry Moore s Seated Woman, 1958 59
In this paper I will describe my interpretation of the sculpture through visual observation. Henry
Moore is said to be the most important British sculptor of the 20th century, and the most popular and
internationally celebrated sculptor of the post war period. Moore, believed that a material had its own
vitality and therefore used a direct carving technique and worked on the material directly instead of
molding and casting. Moore was inspired by the human body and the nature. This led him to creating
abstract forms to draw analogies between the human body and landscape. (Henry Moore Biography,
Art, and Analysis of Works. (n.d.). Retrieved June 21, 2016, from http://www.theartstory.org/artist

The sculptor has a lot of texture all throughout and seems to be disproportionate. The bottom half or
legs of the sculpture is not only large but appears to be thick, solid and robust. The middle of the
sculptor which would be the abdomen is concaved and seems to have been carved out. The top part of
the sculptor or the torso seems to be the most disproportionate. The arms of the sculptor are not well
defined and one arm might even appear to be crossed over her breast while her breast seem to be full
and voluptuous. From the back, the sculptor is much more defined as you can clearly see that it is a

  • 2. Use Of Anthropomorphism In Farley Mowat s Never Cry Wolf Never Cry Wolf , by Farley Mowat, uses a lot of anthropomorphism. We see wolves as bloodthirsty savages that prey on the weak, cause havoc, and do a lot more evil things just for the fun of it. In reality, the wolves just do what is needed to survive. Humans hunt mostly for food, but also for pleasure. The wolves hunt for food, nothing else. The use of anthropomorphism completely adds to the book by showing how the wolves are not the enemy, more so the humans. In simple terms, Mowat is not just comparing wolves and humans, but also contrasting. The wolves have a mate as well as the humans. The wolves mates are for life, unlike the many humans that have gotten divorced. The wolves are in a pack; humans are in a family. Unlike wolves, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay On Super Cam Bradly VanCamp Super Cam Anyone that enjoys football enjoys the excitement that comes with the game. A lot of the excitement that comes with football is the touchdowns. After touchdowns, it has become customary to celebrate. These celebrations have become more tame over the years, thanks to Commissioner Roger Goodell and his anti fun ways. Long gone are the days of using the pylon to play miniature golf or stashing a cell phone under the goal post and making a phone call. The most extreme celebration one will see nowadays is a little dance or giving the football to a kid in the crowd. Unfortunately, the media and many other people are trying to make big deal about Cam Newton celebrating his touchdowns with his signature superman ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The media does not like the idea of someone other than Tom Brady or Peyton manning dominating the quarterback position, especially a black quarterback. It is time for the media to move into 2015 like the rest of the world is. In order for Cam Newton to get the respect he deserves, the media has to learn to accept that Cam is here to stay and is an elite talent. How many teams are still undefeated in the NFL this season? There is only one and it just so happens to be Cam Newton s Panthers. With the season that Cam has had, he should be a near lock for MVP, but the media still keeps bringing up other names like Tom Brady. What people fail to realize is that Newton is putting up these numbers with very few receivers. Ted Ginn is the number one receiver for the Panthers and he has never been more than a number three option in his career. Newton does have a great tight end in Greg Olson, but for the most part is single handedly carrying this team with his legs and his arm. It is time for Newton to be put in the positive spotlight. Super Cam is good for the NFL and good for the African American community. He broke the mold and proved that an African American can be a great quarterback in the NFL and have a ton of fun while doing it. Next time you see number 1 flashing that contagious smile and celebrating a big touchdown, embrace it because we are witnessing something ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the 19th century it was seen that the prison system could not reform the prisoners. Citizens lost faith and felt that there was no cure to society s crime problem. It is interesting to see how our prison came about. Through the years and centuries we have been trying to find the right way to deal with criminals. It seems to me that they usually have been in prison for so many years they have trouble going back to society. The only way they know how to live is how they lived in prison. In prison they get a bed to sleep in, food and clothing and they don t have to work hard for it. So they are quick to commit another crime to go back there. Stoddart conducted a study about animals presence in skiing industry in his article, Grizzlies and Gondolas: Animals and the Meaning of Skiing Landscapes in British Columbia, Canada. When people think of skiing, most of them probably picture snow covered nature, especially mountains and forest; however, that public perception has been overlooked one thing: animals are also present as the part of nature (Stoddart, 2011). The subject of this article is to examine three ways in which animals present in skiing world: animals as symbols of nature in the skiing business, environmentalists concern about endangered animals as a consequence of expansion of industry, and interactive interviews with encounters. He selected discourse analysis, field observation, and in person interview for review and analysis (Stoddart, 2011). Certainly there were advantages to both telescopes, one being The Hubble Space Telescope makes a complete orbit, 353 miles above the surface, around the Earth in 97 mins (Hubblesite). Meanwhile, The ALMA being ground based collects information while in one location using the earth s own rotation to see different areas into space. In further research, I found that both telescopes are reflecting telescopes using a large mirrors to bounce wavelengths to the center of the telescope and then into instruments the sends the information to certain instruments that makes images. (Parfitt 84 88) This dynamic shapes the mutual mistrust that exists between black Jews in America and the overwhelmingly Ashkenazi majority. The problem of marginalization began with the waves of Jewish immigrants from Europe who fled the Russion pogroms and later the Nazis. In their homelands, these people were Jewish, but in America they had the opportunity to be white. In cementing their status as white, these Amnerican Jews further alienated the small minority of Jews of African descent and others who do not fit nicely into the white race group. Despite this, the black Jews of America share a diverse cultural history that is both African and Jewish. The Commandment Keepers, are one of the largest and best known black Jewish congregations in America. The movie opens with a scene of Dr. Strange performing surgeries with Dr. Christine Palmer, his friend throughout his typical work day. The importance of these first scenes is to show how important his hands are to him and the people around him. This scene is also important because it seems as though Strange has a love interest in Christine. During one of Strange s surgeries he successfully extracts a bullet from a man s brain and afterwards he is shown celebrating his success in the hallway of the hospital. This scene is relevant because it shows how much pride Strange has in himself and how much he believes that he can do anything. When the viewer gets to the beginning of the movie we are shown Strange s extravagant apartment and the physical things he values. It appears that Strange has a nice life until he gets into a horrendous car accident while on his way to a party. • 20. The Garden By William Makepeace Thackeray Analysis The garden straddles the border between the public and the private, the social and the personal, and the city and the country. It is both man made, yet natural; both intimate, yet open. Hence, the garden, as a place of such contradictions, becomes a space for William Makepeace Thackeray to facilitate characters contemplation, pushing the engagement with the dichotomy between nostalgia and progress. It is in the Royal Gardens at Vauxhall where William Dobbin s intense desire for Amelia begins to slowly manifest. As she wanders through the paths of the garden with George Osborne, he becomes distracted by her, ignoring the gardens that surround him: [A]nd as he saw that good looking couple, threading the walks to the girl s delight and wonder, he watched her artless happiness with a sort of fatherly pleasure. Perhaps he felt that he would have liked to have something on his own arm besides a shawl [...] And the truth is, that of all the delights of the Gardens; [...] Captain William Dobbin did not take the slightest notice. He is well known for his discussions of the acute social, economic, and political issues, including poverty and famines. In his Famine, Affluence, and Morality , Singer (1972) discusses the problem of poverty and hunger, as well as the way this problem is treated in the developed world. Singer believes that charity is inseparable from morality, and no distinction can be drawn between charity and duty. The philosopher offers possible objections to his proposition and relevant arguments to justify his viewpoint. Singer (1972) is convinced that affluent societies should give away within the limits that do not slow down their economic and social growth. Here, the concept of marginal utility comes into play. According to Singer (1972), marginal utility is the level, at which, by giving more, I would cause as much suffering to myself or my dependents as I would relieve by my gift (p. 241). In other words, it is a fragile boundary between being a moral person and a person, who makes his dependents suffer for the sake of saving some distant communities from poverty. Marginal utility is a measure of balance, which implies that bad things are prevented without causing other bad things to happen. Singer (1972) does not say that affluent societies should limit themselves to marginal utility, but they should avoid causing something significantly bad to their families. Certainly, the world presented by Singer (1972) differs considerably from the real order of things. In the real world, charity is not considered as a moral duty. Rather, it is a voluntary act of generosity, which is subject to public approval and praise. This position favors many society members, who can use charity as an instrument of manipulation to achieve their own purposes. Meanwhile, a consensus is emerging that charity is a negative phenomenon, which does not allow changing the situation from within. • 26. The Feminist Movement The feminist movement has been developing its method of solving social and economical issues in three consecutive waves, from the end of the 19th century till present. Each stage had its benchmarks and significant shifts in the treatment of women from viewing them as objects and commodity to perceiving them as citizens in full rights and creators of their own destiny. Gradually, together with the growth of self consciousness and demand for more rights and freedoms, suffragists and later feminists managed to secure more legal precedents and norms manifesting and consolidating their achievements, including the right to vote, to own property and participate in public life. As the number of these precedents accumulated and their visibility in the legal field became clearer, as their practical application turned from the exception to a norm, then the issue raised: is the system which needs such significant amendments viable and whose interest does it represent? As one of the most prominent spokespersons on the issue, Catharine A. MacKinnon, described it, the existing system of justice and the power itself attained the male shape; and lack of power and inability to influence the happening got the female shape. In order to earn mass profits from their movies, directors will change any storyline to create an easy to follow, action filled success. The Lightning Thief novel, written by Rick Riordan, and The Lightning Thief motion picture provide excellent examples of how books are morphed into classic, money making attractions. Even though The Lightning Thief book and movie both share main characters and settings, the book expresses more detail and educates the audience while the movie focuses more on action and convenience, allowing for more errors between plots. Action is one of many differences found between the book and the motion picture. The entire plot of the movie revolves around finding and fighting for the pearls of Persephone, but in the book, Percy, the main character, receives the pearls as a gift on behalf of his father for use in a time of trouble. The settings and opponents faced by Percy and his companions, Annabeth and Grover, are the same: Medusa at the Emporium, Hydra at the Parthenon replica, and the Lotus eaters at the casino. However, the reward for winning in the book is survival, not a pearl as portrayed in the movie. Another example is the scene involving Hades Minotaur. Percy is not an experienced fighter at the beginning of the book; therefore, Percy faints after taking one of the Minotaur s horns. The movie illustrates Percy as a potentially skilled hero in ... All through the house they closed doors and drew shades, they got dead quiet. That is how his father liked it after Jessie came home (Findley 9). Odysseus s tendency to succumb to impulsive strokes of curiosity enables readers to relate with his inner character. Women are caregivers and nurturers. We are strong, independent, protective, and driven. We are the electricity that keeps the lights on and the washers of the laundry when their children are too lazy to do it (only because we care, not because it is our duty ). Unfortunately, this is not how women were always seen. We have had to fight hard to get where we are today, and must continue to fight so we can be somewhere new tomorrow. Women were seen as housewives, who cooked cleaned, and cared for the children while their husband was bringing home the bacon. This transferred into the theater as well. Women were expected to always attend with a male escort to one, keep her safe, as theater could easily turn into a riot, and two because attending without a man suggested one was a prostitute. The invention of the matinee performance allotted women the opportunity to attend shows during the day, making it safe from brawls and thieves while also sparing a woman s reputation. When this happens, schools have boosters. Boosters give the college athletes money, clothes, cars etc. Example of that is Reggie Bush, running back for the University of Southern California from 2003 2005. Bush was paid by boosters to attend USC, which violated NCAA rules. Bush was talked about bad when the violations were revealed and had to return his Heisman trophy. While Bush actions were clearly wrong and him returning the Heisman trophy was warranted, its tough to give him much a hard time. At the time, Bush didn t come from much wealth and even with a full ride football scholarship, he could not cover all of his expenses. Bush s mother was having trouble paying rent, so a booster at USC offered to pay for his mother s apartment. Bush felt like he had to take this offer, as there was no other way to make money and pay for his mother s apartment. If Bush were paid for his participation in the NCAA, then Bush would have not had to violate NCAA rules. The last and the most important reason to pay college athletes, is that it will ensure that most college athletes will complete their degrees. Paying student athletes would provide athletes an incentive to stay in school and complete their degree programs, instead of leaving early for the professional leagues (Should Student Athletes Get Paid?). Tess Being a Victim of Fate in Tess of the D Urbervilles The president of the Immortals had done his sport with Tess In his novel Tess of the d Urbervilles Thomas Hardy expresses his dissatisfaction, weariness, and an overwhelming sense of injustice at the cruelty of our universal fate disappointment and disillusionment. Hardy puts out an argument that the hopes and desires of Men are cruelly saddened by a strong combination of fate, unwanted accidents, mistakes and many sad flaws. Whilst on the other hand Abraham blames it on the blighted star. I would say that there is a sense of fate in this chapter with the discussions between Tess and Abraham with regard to the stars. Even though realistically the event is an accident, Thomas Hardy writes in such a way that we are lead to believe that it is a cruelty of fate rather than a, direct sense of cause and effect . In the result to the death, Tess feels tremendously guilty; this will make her more susceptible to her fathers wishes and doings. Tess is a beautiful young girl who oozes sexuality; however in this novel her beauty does not do her any good. We can see examples of this in many chapters; in chapter eight we can see that Alec is driving at a reckless speed to perhaps appear more manly in the company of Tess. Her natural instinct is to grasp Alec s arm. It seems to me that Alec s intention was to have some type of physical contact with Tess. However the arm holding was not enough for Alec so he asked her to grab his waist with the excuse that he couldn t steer with her latching on. Alec uses Tess as a, sexual conquest . • 46. Minstrelsy Research Paper The Complex Nature of Minstrelsy In 1828, a white stage performer named Thomas Dartmouth Rice became famous for his new song, Jump Jim Crow, which he performed in blackface as Jim Crow, a primitive, well known black trickster character. Although Rice was not the first man to perform in blackface, he was the first to so overtly imitate and mock blacks. The Jim Crow routine inspired other performers to wear blackface and perform as caricatures of blacks in order to degrade them. Due to Rice, minstrelsy became the prominent American theatrical form. Beginning in the 1840s, minstrel performances featured both black and white actors. In 1855, many all black groups joined the minstrel scene. Historians typically portray minstrelsy as an art ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the 1820s, the abolitionist movement was growing, and passionate abolitionists actively fought to abolish slavery. The creation of minstrelsy was a response to violent anti slavery actions. For example, a jury indicted four white men in 1822 for telling slaves that they had the right to fight for their freedom, and three black men published writings in 1829 openly calling for a massive revolt. Northerners, such as Rice, who was from New York, created minstrelsy to convince the North and its congressmen to stop fighting for abolition. They believed that holding middle class values, such as a strong work ethic, patriarchal authority, propriety, and maturity were the markers of deserving freedom. Consequently, minstrel shows characterized male slaves as submissive, lazy, irresponsible, immature, and, therefore, unqualified for freedom. Minstrel shows were extremely popular and performances targeted all socioeconomic groups. Minstrel groups would tour and perform both in prestigious opera houses and makeshift stages. Thus, whites initially created minstrelsy to convince the country, specifically the North, of their pro slavery ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Henry Moore is said to be the most important British sculptor of the 20th century, and the most popular and internationally celebrated sculptor of the post war period. Moore, believed that a material had its own vitality and therefore used a direct carving technique and worked on the material directly instead of molding and casting. Moore was inspired by the human body and the nature. This led him to creating abstract forms to draw analogies between the human body and landscape.
