This document presents a synthesis of approaches to regional analysis in geography. It begins by defining geography as the study of the worldwide ecosystem of which man is a dominant part, examining this system from a spatial perspective. It acknowledges there are various approaches or dichotomies within geography, such as natural vs human geography. The document proposes a simple system to depict the different approaches as interdependent parts united by the overarching spatial viewpoint. It suggests general systems theory can help geographers develop "generalized ears" to better communicate across specializations and identify new approaches by understanding related fields.
