Apprentice Induction Health and Safety Assessing Risk
1. How to assess and minimise risk

2. What is a Hazard and Risk?
A hazard is something that can cause
harm, e.g: electricity, chemicals, working up a
ladder, noise, a keyboard, a work place
bully, stress.
A risk is the chance, high or low, that any
hazard will actually cause somebody harm.
For example, Electric cabling is a hazard. If it
has snagged on a sharp object, the exposed
wiring places it in a 'high-risk' category.
Working in busy factory exposed to noise is a
hazard it becomes high risk when the noise is
too high
Induction
3. Remember this !! It may
come up in the learning
assessment
Induction
4. YOU need to minimise the RISK
In the workplace risks include
• Manual handling
• Machinery
• Noise
• Display Screen Equipment (using computers)
• Food Safety and Hygiene
Induction
5. Manual Handling
• There are many people
who do manual handling
as part of their job
without realising it
• e.g. office workers who
move boxes of
photocopier paper
• You should only lift what
you safely and
comfortably can!
Induction
6. Correct posture of lifting
Please watch demonstration video which is
part of Access Apprentice Induction Course
Induction
7. Do’s and Don’t
DO
DON’T
Make sure you lift
properly back straight and
legs bent
Check your route before
trying to carry items.
Are there stairs and/or
doors or obstructions?
Check the weight; you
may need to have two
X Lift items above YOUR
shoulder height
X Run with items
X Forget to check the route.
Try and carry though
doors get two of you.
Induction
8. YOU need to minimise the RISK
In the workplace risks include
• Manual handling
• Machinery
• Noise
• Display Screen Equipment (using computers)
• Food Safety and Hygiene
Induction
9. Machinery
• You must be trained to
use machinery no matter
how simple
• e.g. a photocopier, a
press, an iron, a fryer
• You should only use the
machinery you are
trained in and fully
understand its safe use
Induction
10. Do’s and Don’t
DO
Ask before you use –
ensure you are fully
trained
Follow all instructions
including the use of safety
equipment (i.e. eye
protection, safety boots)
Only use machines for
their intended purpose
DON’T
X Do not use faulty or
broken machinery –
Report it
X Don’t attempt to fix a
machine (i.e. a jammed
photo copier)
X Play with machinery
Induction
11. YOU need to minimise the RISK
In the workplace risks include
• Manual handling
• Machinery
• Noise
• Display Screen Equipment (using computers)
• Food Safety and Hygiene
Induction
12. Noise
• Some work environments are
noisy – its important to
protect your own hearing as
well as the hearing of others
• Remember once you have lost
your hearing it never comes
back
• Always use ear protection and
monitor noise levels
Induction
13. Do’s and Don’t
DO
DON’T
Ensure that you use ear
protection when
appropriate
Keep noise to a minimum
by closing doors, using
sound proofing
Do check your hearing
regularly especially if you
work noisy environments
X Don’t jeopardise your
hearing now – you will
need in the future
X Don’t expose others to
high volumes or
DISTRACTING noise
X Don't use headphones (i.e.
for listening to music) in
the work place
Induction
14. YOU need to minimise the RISK
In the workplace risks include
• Manual handling
• Machinery
• Noise
• Display Screen Equipment (using computers)
• Food Safety and Hygiene
Induction
15. Using Computers
Using a computer or a tablet has
risks, to avoid ensure
• You have correct posture, feet on the
floor, back straight, monitor at eye level
• You don’t slouch
• You don’t “wheel around on chairs”
• You take regular breaks to avoid eye
strain
• Wires and power cables are not trailing
and are not a trip hazard
Induction
17. Do’s and Don’t
DO
DON’T
Ensure that you are sitting
correctly, perhaps setting
a time to reinforce your
good behaviour
Take breaks – away from
the screen
Use risk rests, foot stools
and appropriate
ergonomic equipment
X Don’t slouch
X Don’t use computers for
long periods of time ensure you have the screen
at the wrong height
X Don’t use computers for
inappropriate purposes or
miss use access and trust
you have
Induction
18. E- Safety and E - RESPONSIBILITY
• As with all Health and Safety
you are responsible for your
use of computers.
• Remember keep yourself
safe, don’t jeopardise others
safety (i.e. sharing their
information)
• All internet use is logged
• Follow your companies and
college specific guidelines
Induction
19. YOU need to minimise the RISK
In the workplace risks include
• Manual handling
• Machinery
• Noise
• Display Screen Equipment (using computers)
• Food Safety and Hygiene
Induction
20. Food Safety and Hygiene
Food safety and hygiene is about protecting people
and minimising the risk.
You must understand the basics of
Cleaning – i.e. following routines, meeting
standards using correct materials, cloths
and clean uniforms
Chilling – storing food at appropriate
temperatures
Cooking – making sure food is cooked and
served at correct safe temperatures
Cross-contamination – avoiding food
poisoning
Induction
21. Do’s and Don’t
DO
DON’T
Follow the 4 C’s of Food
hygiene
Label and store food
appropriately, rememberi
ng to separate
Ensure food is cooked at
right temperatures
Be sensitive about peoples
food allergies and beliefs
with regard to food
X Use out of date food
X Don’t mix cleaning
products or bring products
in from home
X Leave food out in the open
or exposed
