Destruction Of Innocence
Isn t it crazy how growing up works? Every child is born innocent, yet how they
choose to lose it, is dependent on what choices they make in life, and others choices.
In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper E. Lee, Jem and Scout symbolically represent the
mockingbird by illustrating that innocence is often destroyed at the hands of others
experience.
Jem had a particular way of destroying his innocence. Although To Kill a
Mockingbird was primarily about racism and bigotry, Jem experienced backlash and
hatred even from kids he knew. One clear example of this new experience, is when
Jem barked, My sister ain t dirty, and I ain t scared of you (Lee 78). Jem is still a
young child, and many people seem to forget that. Jem experienced a lot for being ...

Adults were often the reason for Scouts destroyed innocence, and even some of her
childhood. People would say things that scout recognized as bad. As she was with
her family, she said A nigger lover. I ain t very sure what it means, but the way
francis said it... (Lee 86), while referring to Francis. A mockingbird is someone
who is realizing the world as a destruction of innocence. In this case, she does not
know what a nigger is, but she knows that it is wrong. Her innocence is starting to
leave, like the true mockingbird she is. Even if it is at the beginning of her life.
Innocence can also be portrayed through an understanding of social justice. It is a
main theme in the book, but scout is starting to understand this more and more.
The Tom Robinson case was no different with social justice, and the issues that
were present. When told that there were four different types of people, she
questioned I told Jem if that was so, then why didn t Tom s jury made up of folks
like the cunninghams, acquit Tom like the Ewells? Jem waved my question away
as being infantile. (Lee 226). People were questioning Scout as she gained a clear
understanding of problems with social justice. A mockingbird is a very smart bird,
as Scout is a very smart girl. Through her destruction of innocence she is starting to
realize that the world isn t as fair, or as true as she thought. Others decisions have
helped her gain an understanding of the world and with that, her lost innocence.
Scout being very smart does not help with her depleting innocence, but others
decisions are making it worse and worse, and she knows too much for a little

Chapter 5 Normalization of Database Tables Discussion Focus Why are some table
structures considered to be bad and others good and how do you recognize the
difference between good and bad structures? From an information management point
of view, possibly the most vexing and destructive problems are created through
uncontrolled data redundancies. Such redundancies produce update and delete
anomalies that create data integrity problems. The loss of data integrity can destroy
the usefulness of the data within the database. (If necessary, review Chapter 1,
Section 1.4.4, Data Redundancy , to make sure that your students understand the
terminology and that they appreciate the dangers of data redundancy.) Table

Also in regards to wisdom, the Greek word tem is used as inner man, mind, will
heart, and understanding (blueletterbible.org). In scripture, tem is used by addressing
the skilled tabernacle workmen in Exodus 35:10, And every wise hearted among you
shall come, and make all that the LORD hath commanded, (NASB).
New Testament Usage of Wisdom In the New Testament, words like wisdom and
wisely are translated from the Greek word phronimos (blueletterbible.org). It is
translated to mean prudent, sensible, and wise (Vine, 2006). In Luke 1:17,
phronimos is used when the angel says And he shall go before him in the spirit
and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the
disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the
Lord, (NKJ). Throughout the New Testament, it appears that wisdom is mostly
referred to as something gained through life experiences or experiences from God. It
seems to also be implied that wisdom is the best in old age.

The Negative Effects Of Social Justice
Mary Wollstonecraft, famous activist for women s rights in the late seventeen
hundreds declares, It is Justice not charity that is wanting in the world. The difference
between justice and charity can shape the way Americans live and think. For
instance, charity is appeasing the effects of injustice, while justice roots out the
problem and hopefully demolishes it. However, today in America people scream the
word discriminationor White privilege believing that it is the answer to all their
problems. They scream for social justicethat was supposedly never given to them.
They say these terms blaming others for their problems instead of looking at
themselves. The need for reparation for the past feeds their desire for social justice
and equality in everything. The new Social Justice movement has harmful effects
on America because it divides society, focuses on improbable equality, and pushes
one down to bring others up. White privilege, the concept of being at advantage
due to skin color has been the bases for arguments on improbable equal
opportunities in the fight for social justice. According to Su L. Boatright Horowitz,
author of Difficult Times for College Students of Color: Teaching White Students
about White Privilege Provides Hope for Change, white privilege is real and
growing in colleges in America causing white students to be ahead of the game.
Nevertheless, this belief is one sided. Where is the white privilege to those white

Pete Rose And The Hall Of Fame
My controversial topic is on Pete Rose and how he should be inducted into Baseball s
Hall of Fame. Pete Rose was a player that I looked up to when I was a young boy
playing baseball. I was a big fan of his collecting all of his baseball cards from rookie
year up to the present time. Now, most of the baseballcritics and others do not want
Pete Rose inducted. They claim that his illegal betting on baseball games should
keep him out of the Hall of Fame.
Almost all of the highly questionable evidence that Commissioner Bart Giamatti
held was derived from former friends and associates of Rose. Up to $30,000 per
day , so some of Roses close friends say. These former friends of Rose are Tommy
Gioiosa, Donald Stenger, Mike Fry, and Paul Janszen. This evidence is what
prompted the banishment from baseball of Pete Rose, which he signed. The
evidence was enough for the Commissioner. In 1989, baseball s Commissioner
Bart Giammati suspended Pete Rose from association with professional baseball for
life for gambling. Rose also spent five months in a minimum security prison for tax
evasion in 1990. He did not report cash money he accepted for signing baseballs and
photographs at baseball card shows. It is still to this day not proven that Rose did
bet on the baseball team that he was managing. Rose himself still holds true to his
statement that he never bet on the game of baseball. Evidence is minimal and it has
been over ten years, yet he is still ineligible to be voted into
Ezra Pound developing ideas Essay
Ezra Pound s Developing Ideas
Often called quot;the poet s poet, quot; because of his profound influence on 20th
century writing in English, American poet and critic, Pound, believed that poetry was
the highest of the arts. You never would have believed that a writer and optimist such
as Ezra Pound would have been born in Hailey, Idaho in 1885. From the sound of
his work you d thing he was definitely one of those European Imagist. In 1908, after

Examples Of Racism In This Is England
The film This is England is a movie about twelve year old Shaun growing up and
trying to fit in with the local skinheads. The film takes place during 1983 in a small
town in England. The eighties in England was a time under Thatcher s government,
and society was deeply affected by how Thatcher had governed the country. The
Thatcher years had caused a lot of problems for the working class like
unemployment, poverty, racism, and people were angered by the unnecessary
Falkland war. All of these factors that Thatcher s government induced is well depicted
in the movie, but is the film s portrayal of life under Thatcher s government an
accurate portrayal?
High unemployment, poverty and immigration were all factors that lead to a rise in
racism and hate crimes in England in the eighties. Many white working class youth
were angry and resentful due to the lack of jobs and the bad conditions they
suffered and this often turned into racial hatred. One of the main characters, Combo,
is in fact young and part of the working class, and the movie gives a great insight
into how society at that time caused a lot of hate towards immigrant. Combos racism
is caused by him believing that all the immigrants can just walk into the England, get
a flat for their family and then take away the jobs from ethnic ... Show more content

Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands in 1982 and Thatcher used that opportunity to
play the part of a heroic war leader, some people praised her, while most of the
working class felt the whole war in itself was absolutely unneeded. In the film
Shaun s father was killed in the conflict with Argentina, and in real life many
people like Shaun s father lost their life or a loved one in this war. There is a lot of
talk about the war in the film, Combo talks about it being a total waste of time and
lives. The working class discontent only grew stronger towards Thatcher due to the

Ap Calculus Ab Topic Is Solving Limits
My favorite AP Calculus AB topic is solving limits. This is because limits are
fairly simple to solve. AP Calculus AB was extremely difficult for me, so I was
happy to find a topic that was somewhat easy for me to understand. I know that a
limit is the value that a function or sequence approaches as the input or index
approaches some x value. To solve most limits, I had to use six basic properties of
limits: the sum rule, the difference rule, the product rule, the constant multiple rule,
the quotient rule, and power rule. Sometimes I had to use substitution, factor the limit
first, use the conjugate method, or simplify the complex fraction in the limit. To
solve limits involving infinity, I had to look at the highest degree of the numerator
and denominator. If the degree of the numerator is equal to the degree of the
denominator, the limit is the lead coefficient ratio. If the degree of the numerator is
greater than the degree of the denominator, the limit does not exist (DNE), В± в€
ћ. If
the degree of the numerator is less than the degree of the denominator. Understanding
how to solve limits pleased me. I liked solving limits because I did not have much
difficulty doing it.
My least favorite AP CalculusAB topic is Riemann sums. This is because I had a
hard time remembering how to do them. Riemann sums are used to estimate the
answer to an integral or estimate the area under a curve. There are three different
types of Riemann sums: left Riemann sums, (LRAM), right Riemann
Lay Le Freine
hereas a variety of Canterbury Tales tales are inclined to make the nobility aware of
the capability of ordinary people and how beauty presents itself in their lives, other
medieval popular romances strive to provide a sense of wish fulfillment for a
different audience; the powerless. Thomas Chestre s Sir Launfalin particular appeals
to someone who wishes to escape profound social inequality and injustice. Thomas
Chestrespeaks to his audienceby rewriting a better version of the difficult life of a
commoner as a fairytale that idealises familiar views of the peasant; Her faces wer

Lay le Freine explores themes of patience being rewarded, of the oppressed turning
out to be noble, and of identity establishment. Le Freine and her mother form a
central conflict within the moral structure of the tale that condemns envy and
rewards kindness. The mother is so envious of the birth of her neighbour s twins
that she spreads a rumour that a woman only gives birth to twins if they belong to
two different men. Through this subplot, Lay le Freine includes reference to the
extensive superstition about whether or not a woman is virtuous if she gives birth
to twins. The presence of this superstition may reflect the court s strictness about
reproduction levels, particularly to do with the poor, during the medieval times
during which this was written. Pressure from the court, the church, as well as
embarrassment within society could have often lead to the abandonment of a
child; such as le Freine. In her story, le Freine manages to flourish even though she
has been exposed, proving that her difficulties have not damaged, but improved
her character; And damisel Freyn, so hende of mouth, / Her semblaunt and her
gentrise, / Her lovesum eighen, her rode so bright (ll. 265, 268, 269). In this way,
this story is incendiary in nature since it ignites a feeling of confidence in the
audience who would enjoy hearing about a mistreated character like themselves,
who rises from the ashes despite their limitations to prove themselves noble, and
despite having nothing to their name. As much as this story would likely ignite
feelings of hope amongst the audience, they are also able to relate to the voice of le
Freine, which is not directly spoken to them until line 379, just before the end. In
acquiring a voice only once
Charlie Chaplin s Commentary On Society In The Film
City...
City Lights In the 1931 film City Lights , Charlie Chaplin opens our eyes , so to
speak, about how society values trivial elements of people over the deeper person by
using blindness. In this film, Chaplin brilliantly mixes lighthearted comedy with deep
and complex ideas about problems with society. Chaplin uses music, gags, and a
genuine love connection to portray this point in multiple ways throughout the movie.
Chaplin also took the bold step of not making a talking movie, even though they were
available at the time, making the details in the pictures and sounds he was creating
that much more important. What makes City Lightsso special, and different from
other comedies, is Chaplin s natural blend of comedic scenes with tense and serious
scenes. Chaplin weaved together a masterpiece that culminates in the end with the
lady seeing who she fell in love with, which is also the moment Chaplin slaps the
viewer in the face with the realization that the priorities in society are misguided and
that the important things cannot be seen with the eye.
To see Chaplin s commentary on society, one must first look at how he uses sound
to spread his message. Right from the first scene, Chaplin infuses his views on
society with sound as he plays the kazoo to represent the high class men speaking
when they are unveiling a new statue. During this speech, the view can see the tramp
(Charlie Chaplin) behind them sleeping on top of the statue. With this scene, Chaplin
is saying

The History of the Quebec Francophones and the Attempts Made to Accommodate

The merging of two separate and distinct groups is what has given Canada its unique
cultural identity. While some early politicians believed assimilation was the best
approach to building a strong Canada, it became increasing difficult to convince the
Quebec francophones that a national identity should take precedence over retaining
their unique culture. Opposing viewpoints and different agendas have caused
mistrust among the Quebec francophones towards the federal government and
mistrust among other provinces towards Quebec. Constitutional amendments have

While it appears critical that Quebec be acknowledged as a distinct society, I
believe it is imperative that the issue of distinctness is granted not only to Quebec
but also to all of Canada s first nation people. Additional amendments to the
constitution should include a provision that any group recognized as a distinct
society is given the same rights as any other distinct society. While Quebec wishes to
have special recognition and powers to maintain their unique cultural identity, so to
should the aboriginal people of Canada. If Quebec is awarded the right to limit the
use of English language in the province in favour of the French language, then the
Cree of James Bay should also be granted the right to have the Cree language take
priority over French and English. The Inuit and the many other aboriginal groups
should also be recognized as distinct, having their own unique language and, as such,
have their language and culture protected and guaranteed under the constitution.
While Canada has entrenched the bilingual feature of our nation, it has failed to
acknowledge that first people of Canada, had languages of their own that should be
recognized and protected.
Linguistic duality was embedded in the British North America Act of 1867 and has
had both positive and negative repercussions for Canada. Language has evoked
divisive social and political tension between French speaking and English speaking
Canadians. (Jackson Jackson, 1998: 230) By

framing the Cold War as a fight between the good and free capitalist United States

In a political snafu the Reagan administration sold arms to Iran so that they could
secure the release of US hostages and also generate enough money to support
Contra. This became known as the Iran Contra Affair and steeply affected Reagan
s popularity with the people. (Mayer, Jane and Doyle McManus) Reagan s
willingness to use violence alarmed many, especially when he took up the position
of the Soviet Union being purely evil. After Gorbachev became a chairman
representing many soviet political parties and took on a position of negotiator,
Reagan became less militant and more open to discussion, seeing Gorbachev as a
good man who came out of an evil system. A significant event during this period
was Reagan s speech at the berlin wall, which urged Gorbachev to bring down the
wall and reunite berlin. As tensions rapidly declined the Soviets declared that they
would no longer interfere in allied affairs.
Domestic Policies Reagan s domestic policies focused on conservative economic
values, specifically his implementation of supply side economics and large tax cuts,
which thereafter were dubbed Reaganomics Which lowered tax rates, reduced
regulation, limited new currency, reduced the growth of government spending. When
he entered the presidency Reagan faced an extremely high rate of inflation and high
interest rates which he sought to limit by making large tax cuts and curbing social
spending. This produced major results, expanding the economy and
A Pleasurable Fabliau In The Miller s Tale
The Miller s Tale: A Pleasurable Fabliau Pilgrims of the Tabard Inn, it is with great
pleasure to announce that the winning of the story telling contest is The Miller.
After hearing all of the tales told on our adventure, which can also be found in The
Canterbury Tales, By Geoffrey Chaucer, the answer to the question, who told the
best tale, seemed quite evident to me. A story consisting of good moral and great
pleasure was my initial criteria, which The Miller s tale met and exceeded through
several literary elements. This story does not have an overall moral, but instead,
several morals found singularly within each characterbased off of their actions. The
Miller successfully delivers his tale through a third person limited point of view,...

Instead, the Miller scatters several morals throughout the story, each one applying
to a different characters situation. John s moral is slightly ironic, in that it s
idealogy stems from a philosopher Nicholas is studying. The Miller has already
disclosed that this is not something John believes in. A Roman philosopher, Cato
believed that people should not marry outside of their age range, something John
did. Alison is, therfore, unfaithful. In fact, he [John] was jealous and kept close
watch upon her, for she was wild and young, while he was old and thought himself
likely to be cuckolded . (Chaucer, pg. 67) Because of John s overbearingness and
old age, Alison is driven to cheat with a younger man. For Nicholas, however, the
moral lesson he walks away with is different. When Absolon returned to where he
was tricked into kissing Alison s butt, he was ready with his hot iron and he smote
Nicholas in the middle of his ass (Chaucer, Pg. 79) Nicholas, being the ringleader
of the events leading up to this, had his trick backfire on him. Nicholas walks away
with the moral lesson that the trickster is the one who gets burned in the end. While
these two morals are wholly different and the experiences leading up to them do not
parallel in the slightest, the multilayered morals that The Miller dispersed in his tale

Cinderella, By Charles Perrault
In Charles Perrault s Cinderella, there are many different ways he conveys
goodness being a magical thing in people s hearts. When reading it, it is easy to
point out how he thinks kindness is the most important thing it one s life. In Maria
Tatar s An Introduction to Fairy Tales, she talks about fairy tales being an escape to
children. She states that there is a world of imagination in fairy tales that takes reality
and makes it exciting and adventurous. She also mentions that fairy tales help
influence the way people look at certain things and the paths they choose. Cinderella,
by Charles Perrault, is a story that inspires all kinds of people to focus on inner
beauty in order to get their happily ever after. Cinderella, by Charles Perrault is a
piece of writing that seems to be an average fairy tale. The name Cinderella is a
name known throughout the world; it is known by a variation of people ranging
from kids to adults. We associate this name with the average fairy tale. When
looking at this particular story of Cinderella, it is clear that it is the story of the
house maiden who ends up living happily ever after. The main point of Cinderella is
that when someone is a good person and they live a life of kindness, good things
happen to them. For example, throughout the story Perrault hints to the idea of
Cinderella being beautiful and having a good heart, Cinderella, in spite of her mean
apparel, was a hundred times more handsome than her sisters, though

economic integration, the European Union (EU) is an assemblage of 27 countries
that share a common goal of mutual prosperity, cooperation and peace. There is no
other such union in the world, although it in many ways serves as a model of
integration that has so far has not been successfully replicated. Being part of the EU
has many advantages and disadvantages for countries. The advantages include access
to SEM; funds that aid in infrastructure building; and world representation by a larger
entity that has more power than a small country alone. Among the disadvantages
however, is having to give up a degree of sovereignty that sometimes impedes a

The EU has the world s second longest coastline, after Canada. The combined
member states share land borders with 21 non member states for a total of 12
million miles, the fifth longest border in the world (Pascal, Europe in 12 Lessons).
Evidently, the EU is an entity that warrants careful observation, due to its
enormous size, population, and economy, as well as its role in international
relations. History of the EU In order to understand the current business
environment of the EU, it is critical to examine its origins and schools of thought
that shaped its history. The EU is not just a twentieth century concept; it is a
unified Europe whose purpose is to maintain peace and create a common European
culture that can be traced throughout history, and is rooted in classical
philosophical thinking. In the early 1300s, Pierre Dubois, a French lawyer and
pamphleteer during the reign of Phillip IV, advocated a unified and stronger
Europe to fight papal corruption and win a Crusade. Victor Hugo, a French poet,
imagined a more federal type of Europe, as a unity of nations and people, during
the 1800s. However, the progression of wars between mainly Germany and France
between 1870 and 1945 resulted in massive loss of life and economic deterioration,
making the need for peace integral to the survival of Europe (Pascal). The EU s
evolution is based on different theories of
Accidental Overdose Research Paper
Accidental Overdose
An overdose happens when a drug overwhelms and poisons the body. This can result
in severe illness or death. Drugs that can cause an accidental overdose include illegal
drugs ( street drugs ) and prescription and over the counter medicines. There are many
different possible causes of an accidental overdose. Symptoms and treatment vary
depending on the cause.
An accidental overdose should always be treated as an emergency. If you think that
you or someone else has accidentally overdosed, call 911 immediately.

The Indian Reservation System
An Indian Reservation is a legal territory managed by a certain Native American tribe
given to them, with only partial sovereignty, by the United States government. Only
326 of the country s 567 recognized tribes were granted land, but even the land they
were granted is not sufficient enough to support a sustainable lifestyle. With no rights
to their land, no sense of home, and a rapidly dying culture, native americans have
been dealt with in the worst ways possible after their own massacre and consistently
broken treaties. An analysis of the Indian reservationsystem in the US provides
deeper insight to the idea that the treatment of natives has left profound, long lasting
negative impacts on the lives of native Americans. BODY PARAGRAPH
NUMBER 1: (PUT IN TOPIC SENTENCE) Some officials in the early years of the

to solve this Indian problem was simply to civilize the Native Americans. The goal of
this civilization campaign was to make Native Americans as much like white
Americans as possible by encouraging them convert to Christianity, learn to speak and
read English, and adopt European style economic practices such as the individual
ownership of land and other property (including, in some instances in the South,

Positive And Negatives Of American Culture In The 1980 s
The 1980s culture illustrated both the positives and negatives of American society at
that time. From the many movies, to the toys, new technology, fashion, music, and
sports, all of these reflected the decade. As a matter of fact, most of these examples
listed did have a huge impact on today s culture. To begin with, the 80s had
memorable moments such as the famous movies at that time. Science Fiction or Sci

Furthermore, both science fiction and sci fi are fictional situations that relied on
scientific or technological advances that took place somewhere in the future or on
different planets. Examples include, Star Wars, ET, and Tron, just to name a few,

Essay about Egyptian Funerary Practices
Egyptian Funerary Practices
Ancient Egyptian civilization was based on religion. Their belief in the rebirth after
death became their driving force behind their funeral practices. Death was simply a
temporary interruption, rather than an end to life, and that eternal life could be
ensured by means of worship to the gods, preservation of the physical form thru
mummification, substantial ceremonies and detailed burial policies and procedures.
Even though many today have varying views of an afterlife, many of the funerary
practices that originated in Egypt can be seen in present day funeral services.
The Egyptians believed that the human soul used the first night after death to travel
into the afterlife. The body, which the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though we today do not invest the time, the amount of care given is still present.
The temples, pyramids, tombs, and religious artifacts left behind all tell us that the
Ancient Egyptians believed in the resurrection of the dead. Their belief in
immortality was the fundamental driving force behind their religion. The
formulae which were declared to have been recited during the performance of
ceremonies were written down and copied for scores of generations, and every
pious, well to do Egyptian made arrangements that what had been done and said on
behalf of Osiris should be done and said for him outside and inside his tomb after
his death. (Liturgy of Funeral Offerings, pg.2) This illustrates just how important
the ceremony and the process was to the Egyptians. Their belief in the afterlife and
the importance of the ceremonial steps taken to get them there caused them great
concern with their own funerals. Today, everyone has an idea of what they would
like to do for their own funeral as well. We may follow in the same patterns as our
family heritage has done for generations with either a traditional funeral or
cremation, or we may have a newer alternative in mind for our self. Even though we
may not be preparing for an afterlife, we still have an
Canada s Immigration System Lacks Heart
Canada s immigration system lacks heart, critics say, is an article filled with
professional opinions and debates. These debates and opinions are regarding the
humanitarian and compassionate side of immigration and refugee law in Canada.
The article s main purpose is to expose how Canada has changed its compassion for
acceptance of refugees in recent years. Canadahas always been recognized as an
accepting and go to country in crisis. However, in recent years, there have been
changes. Refugeelegislation has become extremely strict, qualifications for refugees
have become unfair, and limitations regarding what Canada offers refugees have
been set. There is always going to be opposing opinions regarding the compassion
Canada has towards refugees. However, in the article, Peter Harder, a man who has
dealt with the legality of immigrationfrom 1987 to date, believes Canada lacks
compassion for refugees. Peter believes Canada does not contain heart when it comes
to refugees because of the increase in deportation, the extreme conditions attached to
refugee status, and the unfair qualification testing.

North Korea Research Paper
North Korea s leader Kim Jong un has made audacious claims alluding to the power
and potential of the country s nuclear programme. The United State has yet to
confirm the validity of these claims, but the US intelligence has decided to air on the
side of caution; our country is preparing for a nuclear strike. The most dangerous
thing about Kim Jong un s claims is the details. A number of tests conducted, the type
of bombs being tested, the material being used to manufacture these bombs, and
whether or not North Korean intelligence has achieved miniaturization are all very
important factors in the rush to defend our country against these threats. If the
country has conducted multiple tests, it s had more opportunities to refine its
weapon; if the bombs are hydrogen bombs, they are far more powerful; if uranium is
the nuclear reactant being used, North Koreacan make many many more bombs than
before; if they have been able to miniaturize a bomb small enough to fit on a
missile, they can launch an attack on US soil. Kim Jong un has claimed for all of

Classic Drag Analysis
Sue Ellen Case perspective on Classic Drag: The Greek Creation of Female Parts is
staggering. Her frame of reference is strictly feminist. She takes us to the beginning
of fifth and six century feminist movement all the way through the seventeen and
nineteen century. For women, their public life is the property of men and women
are relegated to the invisible private sphere (Worthen 166). There she begins to break
down the the absence of women in theatre. In the sixth century, men and females
were both participated in theatre, unlike in the fifth century where women were void
from the presence of theatre. The drag came about where men dressed as women in
the theatre because it was taboo for a womanto perform on stage. Over the course of
the years, there was an uphill downhill battle between the sexes. There is no
evidence as to why the removal of women from the stage first begin or why it was
even considered. However, women have fought to get their voices heard for years on

Scarlet Begonias/Fire on the Mountain Essay
Michael Peller has been a fan of the Grateful Dead for as long as he can remember.
As a child, he listened to their albums on cassette tapes in the car, and as a college
student, he attended live performances.
The Grateful Dead debuted in 1965 in Palo Alto, CA. It was known for its eclectic,
psychedelic rock style, which was sculpted amid the San Franciscan countercultural
movement of the 1960s. The movement gained speed alongside the civil rights
movement and hippie culture. The Grateful Dead embraced these new beliefs in their
songwriting, rejecting common structure by adopting the jam genre, which is based
off of live improvisation.

However, the parts of the song that most affected Mike Peller were the allusions to
and imagery of the 70s. The song s story follows a young man, walking around the
local square, who is entranced by a young woman with scarlet begonias tucked into
her curls (Grateful Dead). She also had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes,
a line that has stuck with Mike because of how the image reminds him of the 70s,
and as an extension, the ideas of freedom and being carefree. Mike doesn t have
much of an opinion about the lyrics of Fire on the Mountain , but he does love the
rhythm and the bass guitar because it just makes anybody want to dance (Michael
Peller). However, I found the lyrics to be meaningful in ways related to Mike s
enjoyment of the song. The line, fire, fire on the mountain , is repeated throughout
the song, and almost sounds like an urgent call for help. Despite this, the beat and
music rolls on. The song pokes fun at a long distance runner who continues to make

fans dance to the music live at a concert, the lyrics take on a different meaning: on

Evil And Socialism In Upton Sinclair s The Jungle
! Upton Sinclair s The Jungle is about an immigrant family who moved to America for
opportunities and found themselves in the Gilded Age. The conditions of the
factories, housing and workers were disgusting. Social Darwinism is shown
throughout the book with tons of different characters and metaphors. Upton Sinclairs
purpose and main theme for the book was that Capitalism is evil and Socialism
should replace it.
During the book it shows the effect that capitalism has on Jurgis as he slowly
deteriorates. It also shows other characters and how they deal with the pressure of
trying to survive. Some of the people did some terrible things to stay alive and
thriving.
! Social Darwinism is when people do whatever they have to do to survive. The
people in The Jungle do terrible things to stay ahead of the game. One example is
when
Conner denies everything in court so Jurgis gets thrown in jail. If Conner had told
the truth Conner might have gone to jail too and that would ruin his reputation.
Another example would be when Marija had to turn to prostitution so she could
make enough money to survive. She could have gotten arrested, simply because
she was trying to live. A lot of people rationalize their actions with the simple fact
of if they didn t do these things, they cant support themselves or their families. The
managers of Packingtown seem to have the mentality that their life has been
terrible so why should their workers have it any better? Conner is an Irish
immigrant so he understands how hard it is to be an immigrant in America, yet he
still treats Jurgis and Ona terribly. It isn t very common to find someone that will
help you out and be your friend. Throughout the novel, Jurgis witnesses more and
more people that he cares about die. There isn t anything he can do about it because
they don t have enough money. Eventually Jurgis starts to do everything he can to
find a job or at least money. People are taking his money and cheating him out of his
money. When Jurgis lived on the streets begging, he was stripped of his dignity.
Jurgis ran into Jack Duane again and fully went to the dark side.
He turns into a street thief and starts swindling people just like he had been when he

Civil War Analysis
The Civil War, known by many as one of the most tumultuous times in our country s
history is one of the most crucial wars that the United States has ever participated in.
The reason for this is that the country was not at war with an enemy from another
country but within itself. With the many years of conflict between the northern union
states and the southern confederacy states and with the Union s victory over the
confederate south, it has been known as one of the most infamous wars of
United States History. This war also proclaimed the crucial significance of six
presidents from states that represented both the Union and Confederacy and the
effect their political pursuits had on the Civil War. These Presidents were Abraham

The final president, but not the least known, is Mr. Penny himself, Abraham
Lincoln. Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States. He was the
President who ended the Civil War on May 9, 1865. Abe Lincoln was a very trusted,
intelligent, and self taught kid; through self teaching, Lincoln even became a lawyer.
As president of the Union, Lincoln had to lead the North in order to defeat the
Southern Confederacy.
On January 1, 1863, Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation after the Union s
Victory at the Battle of Antietam. Lincoln also initiated several acts to pay for the
high costs of the war such as The Revenue Act of 1861, The Morrill act of 1862, and
the
Homestead Act, which was also passed in 1862. Abraham Lincoln met his death on
April 14, 1865. He was attending a play at the Ford s Theatre in Washington D.C.,
and was shot in the head by John Wilkes Booth. Booth sided with the Confederates.
Lincoln soon died the following day after leaving America feeling a bitter loss and
Imagery In The Scarlet Ibis By James Hurst
A short story written by James Hurst, The Scarlet Ibis, tells the story of the narrator
and his younger brother who he called Doodle. Throughout the story, the narrator
expresses guilt because his whole family never believed his brother would survive
long after childbirth. He even planned to kill him once. In the future, he would also
decide to teach him to walk simply because he was embarrassed about having a
sibling who couldn t fulfill his purpose as a typical brother. Imagery is the use of
language to represent objects, acts, feelings, thoughts, ideas, states of mind and any
sensory or extrasensory experience (Trombley 5). James Hurstuses vivid imagery

knew, Old Woman Swamp. I pulled the go cart through the saw tooth fern, down
into the green dimness where the palmetto fronds whispered by the stream. I lifted

swamp is a central setting in the story because it s where Doodle and the narrator
spend a lot of time together but also where they work to help Doodle learn to walk.
Hurst uses such brilliant imagery so the reader can imagine the environment in his
mind and connect it to the important events occurring in the text. But, Hurt s
description of the scarlet ibis is perhaps the most meaningful use of imagery in his
short story. Unfortunately, the bird dies right in front of the narrator, Doodle, and

Causation
When looking at any historical event, it is vital to utilize logic, and not allow pride
and other emotions to interfere. In order to understand a historical concept as
intricate as, for example, multiple causation, a special, scholarly reasoning must be
applied. Rather than trying to discover what one wishes to unearth, it is best to study
documents with a spirit of humility. That being said, it cannot be disputed that
multiplecausationwas indeed responsible for the Protestant Reformation.
Using the elementary line of thought, which dictates that a single event caused the
Reformation, is fruitless. It is important to elucidate the various events that are

The powerful social forces at work, which emerged from economic motives, were a
separate cause of the Reformation. Luther and his supporters were one such social
force, but were not the only ones. Merchants of the time were disgusted by the
infusion of cash to Rome. The papacy was raking in all sorts of financial
acquisitions, and the majority of people were paupers. The common folk living in the
sixteenth century were upset at what they saw: a continuous drain on national wealth.
It would only take a single person to begin sowing seeds of dissent among them:
Martin Luther. Luther was part of the chain that developed the Reformation, but
events had to occur before and after him to bring about the change.
Another event needed to occur to ensure that Luther would be able to implement his
plan: Charles V s dilemma. Unsure of the support he had, given that his own prince
supported the reformers and had the power to incite a rebellion, Charles decided to
play it safe. Admittedly, the Crown could have destroyed the rebellion in its infancy,
but it did not. The Church itself also had the power to deal with the rebels. A quote
from Gustavson carefully clarifies the reasons that it could not. After many centuries
as the universal Church of Western Europe, it had undergone both a loss of

Writing Is A Process That I Have Learned
Writing is a process that I have struggled with throughout my entire life. Last
semester in ENGL 1101, I slowly began to understand the writing process.
However, I still struggled with developing my essays. One aspect of writing
effectively, that I feel I lack, is confidence. Last semester, I was slowly becoming
more confident, but as the due date for this semester s first essayapproached, that little
confidence seemed to disappear. The structure of the course, however, helped in
gaining my confidence back. My first official writingwas a biography for the
portfolio. This allowed me to introduce myself for my professor. In less than a week,
the major writing assignments started. As I finished one essay and began the next, I
slowly gained confidence as my teacher encouraged my writing ability. One aspect of
the writing process that was extremely helpful for building my confidence was the
revisionstage. Although personal revisions were helpful, the peer revisions were the
most helpful for me. After the final essay, I felt much more confident in my ability to
write. I believe I have become a much more effective writer, and through the structure
of my portfolio, this will become evident.
The first aspect of my portfolio was the revisions of two of the major writing
assignments. By going back and reviewing and revising my essays, this allowed me
to not only fix some of the major mistakes that I made but also learn from them. I
choose my second major writing assignment to
Robert Walton And Robert Walton In Frankenstein By
Mary...
In Frankenstein by Mary Shelly, Robert Walton is comparable to Frankenstein s
monster. Neither are able to find any sense of belonging, and have a craving for the
companionship of someone similar to themselves.
Robert Walton plays an often overlooked role in this story, although he can be
considered the primary narrator. Walton is the captain of a failing expedition to the
North Pole who discovers a freezing and lost Victor Frankenstein. Walton nurses
Frankenstein back to health, and Frankenstein tells Walton of his misfortune of a life
story. The similarities between Frankenstein and Walton are made fairly obvious, as
Frankenstein himself points out their somewhat similar pursuits of knowledge and
failure to realize their own limits, as well as warns Walton about the consequences of
taking an obsession too far, implying that Frankenstein sees a little of himself in the
captain.
However, I think that there is an even more interesting observation to be made of
Walton, by comparing him to the monster. Both Walter and the monster experience a
considerable amount of loneliness, with a contrasting cause and a comparable effect.
Both of them are also fairly intelligent, with little education, creating another parallel
between the two.
Walton s search for a like minded individual is seemingly endless. Walton is unable
to find people with thoughts and tastes similar to his own. This is made clear in
Walton s letters to his sister. The source of the monster s loneliness is a

The two ads I chose were the Nationwide Baby commercial and the Progressive
prank protection commercial. I chose these ads because they show a practical

The first ad I will talk about is the Nationwide Baby ad. The ad starts off with a

A Media Analysis Of A River Runs Through It Worldview
Media Analysis of the film, A River Runs Through It Our worldview is how we
interpret reality and what we believe to be true. Our worldview evolves over time
as our life experiences shape how we approach life. According to Ronald Nash, a
biblical worldview is defined as Human beings and the universe in which they
reside are the creation of God who has revealed himself in Scripture (Faith and
Reason, 1988, pg. 47). When you believe the Bible is true, then it will be the
foundation of everything you say and do. As I watched the movie A River Runs
Through Itthe worldview that the film portrays was evident. It was easy to pick up
on the worldviews of the characters. The film is about a familyliving near the
Blackfoot River in Missoula, Montana, in the early 1920 s. The father is a
passionate fisherman and Presbyterian minister who emphasizes in his sermons
that the disciples were fishermen. The film also revolves around the ministers two
sons and their love for fly fishing. They were taught the skill well by their father.
Their father ties the love of God into the ability of His people to use rudimentary
tools to engage in the beautiful act of fly fishing to provide food. One of the things
that the father tells his sons right away in the movie was, All good things come by

Essay on The Price of Diamonds Is too High
The Price of Diamonds Is Too High
For centuries the diamond has fascinated man for its alluring sparkle and physical
hardness. Formed about three billion years ago, the diamond may very well be the
oldest and most precious item any person can own. The internationally accepted
notion that this commodity is one of the most treasurable commodity of them all
has led to the public being prepared to pay the prices that are set by a group of
companies in an agreement known as a cartel. This essay will evaluate the diamond
market on a microeconomic level and discuss how the diamond cartel came about,
what has allowed it to operate for decades, as well as how it determines the price of
diamonds. In addition, this essay will, by aid of diagrams ... Show more content on

In the same light, if the price varied vastly between companies, people would be
able to purchase from the company that charges less, resulting in people losing their
appreciation of the product. A threat to the company came about in the 1950s when
diamonds were discovered in Siberia, and although these diamonds were of a
somewhat inferior quality to the ones sold the company De Beers, these cheaper
diamonds would lead to a decrease in the quantity of De Beers diamonds demanded.
Therefore, De Beers bought up almost every diamond from Siberia, meaning that it
owned the vast majority of the diamonds of the world. Price fixing and output
restriction were the next step to ensure that diamonds do not lose their value to the
world.
The general law of demand states that the higher the price of a good, the lower the
demand. However, the cartel introduced an incentive so that regardless of how high
up they decide to push the price of diamonds, there would still be a great demand
for them. They developed the marketing strategy of making diamonds synonymous

Jan Johns Accomplishments
If you are one of the many people who has a passion for playing video games, you
may be familiar with the vocal artistry of Jan Johns without even realizing it. She
has worked on some prestigious games including Dungeons and Dragons and
Fallout 3 and 4. What you may not know is the backstory of this versatile actress,
and I was so excited to get the recent opportunity to chat with her about her work in
the industry as well as some details that have shaped her as a person and
entertainer. What inspired you to get involved in the entertainment industry?
When I was growing up, I was fairly isolated. My dad was a repo man, and car lots
aren t the best places to meet kids your own age. I really had no friends, and I was
surrounded by adults. So I discovered that I could make people laugh. I was really
good at mimicking people, and that was something that always made everyone
laugh. I was also an overweight kid. I actually joined TOPS (Take Off Pounds

I used to do a lot of summer stock because I love musical theater, and I wanted to
keep working even between voice and film/TV work. Interestingly enough, I went to

back, I was sick. We have no idea where or how I picked up the disease, but I
developed Secondary Addison s Disease. For six years, I suffered with this disease. In
some ways, I practically lost those six years. I still did some voiceover work, but this
disease affects your energy level. You body doesn t make cortisol which affects
your blood sugar and blood pressure. When I did my work, I would take everything
with me and sleep in the car as I knew after work, I wouldn t have the energy to

5 Maps And Charts That Will Surprise You Analysis
The article titled, 5 Maps and Charts That Will Surprise You by Ezra Klein asks,
Which chart did you find the most surprising? The chart I found the most
surprising was the chart that was titled, Switzerland is the best place to be born
because I thought that the U.S. would be a better place to be born. Also, I didn t
know that the geography of a place needs to be counted to determine if children
have the best chance of a happy, safe and prosperous life. I also didn t think that
trust in public institutions and the health of family life counted in children having
the best chance for a happy, safe and prosperous life. I didn t think these would be
needed because these don t seem that important to live a happy, safe, and prosperous
life.
Christopher Columbus vs. Alvez Nunez Cabeza de Vaca
Essay
Christopher Columbus and Alvez Nunez Cabeza de Vaca were both explorers for
Spain, but under different rulers and different times. The more famous, Christopher
Columbus, came before de Vaca s time. Columbus sailed a series of four voyages
between 1492 and 1504 in search for a route to Asia which led accidentally to his
discovery of new landinhabited with Indians. Christophersailed under the Spanish
monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabellafor his journey to the Indies, whom he was loyal to
by claiming everything in their name. De Vaca , followed in Christopher s footsteps
and journeyed to Hispanionola for Spain s emperor, Charlves V, the grandson of
Ferdinand and Isabella. Both, Columbus and de Vaca composed a series of letters
addressing the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During his fourth voyage, Christopher endured many hazards, like imprisonment,
which triggered him to compose a letter filled with his many accomplishments that he
believes went unnoticed. Columbus had hopes that this will generate some sort of
pity from the monarchs.
Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca wrote his letters for entirely different reasons. His
sole purpose was to inform others (of his sufferings and his discoveries of the
Native Americans). He also wanted to justify his conclusions regarding Spanish
policy and behavior in America which is mainly addressed to Charles V. De Vaca
believes that [his] only remaining duty is to transmit what [he] saw and heard in the
nine years [he] wandered lost and miserable over many remote lands. Therefore, he
conveys to Charles V the many incidents that occurred throughout his struggle for
survival while in Texas. In De Vaca s opinion, he thinks that the information he is
revealing will be useful to others and will be of no trivial value for those who go in
[his majesty s] name to subdue countries.
The descriptions which Christopher Columbus and Alvez de Vaca reveal are entirely
different. Columbus wrote information that was insignificant. His explanations are
very vague and are only somewhat in depth when something interests him greatly, like

The lost of confidence by investors have caused the regulatory repercussion in the
global markets. The best way to evade future crises and build business is not about
implementing regulation to avoid fraud, but to use smarter ethics as well in order to
maximize the company s integrity. However, ethical behavior must not be confused
with following the law or achieve what communities suppose is acceptable or
satisfactory.
Social norms and laws could ride contrary to what is ethical, for instance lets think
about apartheid and slavery. Ethics need to stand above and not manipulated by an
individual, who might conduce these ethics into a negative side, that can lead to
induce people to accept what is wrong just because the law says that.
Why are ethics important in global banking? Ethics are vital to maintain a level of
trust between the organization and their clients, to support the required independence
and providing suitable investment advice. These decisions result in the physical
transfer of financial assets, funds that can be withdrawal from BRIC equity markets
and reinvested in London property or commodities, in some types of cases. Banking
in general has a prolonged history of a successful regulation disturbed by
monopolization periods such as, Babylon s temples in 2000 BC, Augustus QV in

grown ups do, in this case his auntie. We can use this to call the others. Have a

their actions, Piggy has the ability to stay calm and thoughtful about situations.
Piggy is one of the important characters because he is the most intelligent and

statesman and strategos were his first jobs before he became a leader. His first jobs
influenced him to be one of the greatest leaders of Athens. He ruled Athens from 460
B.C. to 429 B.C. Pericles prospered the land by strengthening the democracy,
expanding the empire, and glorifying Athens. When Pericles first ruled Athens, he
created The Council of 500. The Council of 500 discussed and voted in assembly
meetings. Although Pericles supported The Council of 500, he thought that all people
had the right to vote. Not only the wealthy citizens, but also the poor were able to

The Volatility of Crude Oil Prices
The volatility of crude oil prices have been experienced since the end of the 20th
century. The March 1999 spikes were experienced due to the restriction of crude oil
production and cooperation among OPEC member states, the growth of oil demand
in Asia that signified its recovery following the Asian financial crisis and decreased
production from non OPECcountries (Al Abri, 2013). The world market reacted
with a sharp rise in prices with the increase in crude oil going beyond 30USD
/barrel in the last quarter of 2000 (Chen, Hamori and Kinkyo, 2014). OPEC
countries tried to stabilize prices through the increase or reduction in production to
a range of 22USD per barrel to 28USD per barrel (Ghosh and Kanjilal, 2014). The
incident on September 2001 caused a deep reduction in crude oil prices, irrespective
of earlier decreases in production by exporters that are non OPEC and quota
reduction by OPEC countries. After a short while, prices rose to 25USD per barrel
with prices going beyond this in 2004 to about 40USD per barrel (Jimenez
Rodriguez, 2011).
Factors linked to the rise in the price of oil include the continuous fall in the value of
USD and subsequent Middle East tensions, China s increased demand for crude oil
and the uncertainty of Russian s producer, Yukos (Chuku, 2012). The 2008 banking
crisis, which was a consequence of the financial crisis, reinforced significantly the
cyclical downturn. After the insolvency of numerous financial institutions and banks
in the US,
Mortality In Raymond Chandler s The Big Sleep
Raymond Chandler, author of the novel the The Big Sleep , was able to obtain the
title of his book by how he used the characters to give a comprehensive plot. The
title of this novel was a metaphor to speak about death in a more light way and to
have a deeper meaning to it as the characters shown in the novel. The question of
mortality is seen on every page of this novel, the title itself means death as it talks
about a prolonged, deep, almost unending slumber. It alludes to rumination in the last
pages of the book about resting the big sleep.
You were dead, you were sleeping the big sleep, you were not bothered by things
like that, oil and water were the same as wind and air to you. You just slept the big
sleep, not caring about the nastiness of how you died or where you fell (230).
When we look at the whole novel, we can see that there are series of death cases,
and there is a hidden plan, which leaves the characters in this story to have a
different perspective about death. Chandler has created a nice story line that shows
how the community of Los Angeles handles or defines mortality. 1930s Los Angeles
with its killers and blackmailers is fundamentally a city of doubt, where every ...

  • 2. Destruction Of Innocence Isn t it crazy how growing up works? Every child is born innocent, yet how they choose to lose it, is dependent on what choices they make in life, and others choices. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper E. Lee, Jem and Scout symbolically represent the mockingbird by illustrating that innocence is often destroyed at the hands of others experience. Jem had a particular way of destroying his innocence. Although To Kill a Mockingbird was primarily about racism and bigotry, Jem experienced backlash and hatred even from kids he knew. One clear example of this new experience, is when Jem barked, My sister ain t dirty, and I ain t scared of you (Lee 78). Jem is still a young child, and many people seem to forget that. (Lee 86), while referring to Francis. A mockingbird is someone who is realizing the world as a destruction of innocence. In this case, she does not know what a nigger is, but she knows that it is wrong. Her innocence is starting to leave, like the true mockingbird she is. Even if it is at the beginning of her life. Innocence can also be portrayed through an understanding of social justice. It is a main theme in the book, but scout is starting to understand this more and more. The Tom Robinson case was no different with social justice, and the issues that were present. When told that there were four different types of people, she questioned I told Jem if that was so, then why didn t Tom s jury made up of folks like the cunninghams, acquit Tom like the Ewells? Jem waved my question away as being infantile. (Lee 226). People were questioning Scout as she gained a clear understanding of problems with social justice. A mockingbird is a very smart bird, as Scout is a very smart girl. Through her destruction of innocence she is starting to realize that the world isn t as fair, or as true as she thought. Others decisions have helped her gain an understanding of the world and with that, her lost innocence. Scout being very smart does not help with her depleting innocence, but others decisions are making it worse and worse, and she knows too much for a little

From an information management point of view, possibly the most vexing and destructive problems are created through uncontrolled data redundancies. Such redundancies produce update and delete anomalies that create data integrity problems. The loss of data integrity can destroy the usefulness of the data within the database. • 5. The Negative Effects Of Social Justice Mary Wollstonecraft, famous activist for women s rights in the late seventeen hundreds declares, It is Justice not charity that is wanting in the world. The difference between justice and charity can shape the way Americans live and think. For instance, charity is appeasing the effects of injustice, while justice roots out the problem and hopefully demolishes it. However, today in America people scream the word discriminationor White privilege believing that it is the answer to all their problems. They scream for social justicethat was supposedly never given to them. They say these terms blaming others for their problems instead of looking at themselves. The need for reparation for the past feeds their desire for social justice and equality in everything. The new Social Justice movement has harmful effects on America because it divides society, focuses on improbable equality, and pushes one down to bring others up. White privilege, the concept of being at advantage due to skin color has been the bases for arguments on improbable equal opportunities in the fight for social justice. According to Su L. Boatright Horowitz, author of Difficult Times for College Students of Color: Teaching White Students about White Privilege Provides Hope for Change, white privilege is real and growing in colleges in America causing white students to be ahead of the game. Nevertheless, this belief is one sided. Where is the white privilege to those white families that are
  • 6. Pete Rose And The Hall Of Fame My controversial topic is on Pete Rose and how he should be inducted into Baseball s Hall of Fame. Pete Rose was a player that I looked up to when I was a young boy playing baseball. I was a big fan of his collecting all of his baseball cards from rookie year up to the present time. Now, most of the baseballcritics and others do not want Pete Rose inducted. They claim that his illegal betting on baseball games should keep him out of the Hall of Fame. Almost all of the highly questionable evidence that Commissioner Bart Giamatti held was derived from former friends and associates of Rose. Up to $30,000 per day , so some of Roses close friends say. These former friends of Rose are Tommy Gioiosa, Donald Stenger, Mike Fry, and Paul Janszen. This evidence is what prompted the banishment from baseball of Pete Rose, which he signed. The evidence was enough for the Commissioner. In 1989, baseball s Commissioner Bart Giammati suspended Pete Rose from association with professional baseball for life for gambling. Rose also spent five months in a minimum security prison for tax evasion in 1990. He did not report cash money he accepted for signing baseballs and photographs at baseball card shows. It is still to this day not proven that Rose did bet on the baseball team that he was managing. Rose himself still holds true to his statement that he never bet on the game of baseball. Evidence is minimal and it has been over ten years, yet he is still ineligible to be voted into

  • 8. Examples Of Racism In This Is England The film This is England is a movie about twelve year old Shaun growing up and trying to fit in with the local skinheads. The film takes place during 1983 in a small town in England. The eighties in England was a time under Thatcher s government, and society was deeply affected by how Thatcher had governed the country. The Thatcher years had caused a lot of problems for the working class like unemployment, poverty, racism, and people were angered by the unnecessary Falkland war. All of these factors that Thatcher s government induced is well depicted in the movie, but is the film s portrayal of life under Thatcher s government an accurate portrayal? High unemployment, poverty and immigration were all factors that lead to a rise in racism and hate crimes in England in the eighties. Many white working class youth were angry and resentful due to the lack of jobs and the bad conditions they suffered and this often turned into racial hatred. One of the main characters, Combo, is in fact young and part of the working class, and the movie gives a great insight into how society at that time caused a lot of hate towards immigrant. • 9. Ap Calculus Ab Topic Is Solving Limits My favorite AP Calculus AB topic is solving limits. This is because limits are fairly simple to solve. AP Calculus AB was extremely difficult for me, so I was happy to find a topic that was somewhat easy for me to understand. I know that a limit is the value that a function or sequence approaches as the input or index approaches some x value. To solve most limits, I had to use six basic properties of limits: the sum rule, the difference rule, the product rule, the constant multiple rule, the quotient rule, and power rule. Sometimes I had to use substitution, factor the limit first, use the conjugate method, or simplify the complex fraction in the limit. To solve limits involving infinity, I had to look at the highest degree of the numerator and denominator. If the degree of the numerator is equal to the degree of the denominator, the limit is the lead coefficient ratio. If the degree of the numerator is greater than the degree of the denominator, the limit does not exist (DNE), В± в€ ћ. If the degree of the numerator is less than the degree of the denominator. Understanding how to solve limits pleased me. I liked solving limits because I did not have much difficulty doing it. My least favorite AP CalculusAB topic is Riemann sums. This is because I had a hard time remembering how to do them. Riemann sums are used to estimate the answer to an integral or estimate the area under a curve. There are three different types of Riemann sums: left Riemann sums, (LRAM), right Riemann

Lay Le Freine hereas a variety of Canterbury Tales tales are inclined to make the nobility aware of the capability of ordinary people and how beauty presents itself in their lives, other medieval popular romances strive to provide a sense of wish fulfillment for a different audience; the powerless. Thomas Chestre s Sir Launfalin particular appeals to someone who wishes to escape profound social inequality and injustice. Thomas Chestrespeaks to his audienceby rewriting a better version of the difficult life of a commoner as a fairytale that idealises familiar views of the peasant; Her faces wer whit as snow on downe (l. 251). Lay le Freine explores themes of patience being rewarded, of the oppressed turning out to be noble, and of identity establishment. Le Freine and her mother form a central conflict within the moral structure of the tale that condemns envy and rewards kindness. The mother is so envious of the birth of her neighbour s twins that she spreads a rumour that a woman only gives birth to twins if they belong to two different men. Through this subplot, Lay le Freine includes reference to the extensive superstition about whether or not a woman is virtuous if she gives birth to twins. The presence of this superstition may reflect the court s strictness about reproduction levels, particularly to do with the poor, during the medieval times during which this was written. Pressure from the court, the church, as well as embarrassment within society could have often lead to the abandonment of a child; such as le Freine. In her story, le Freine manages to flourish even though she has been exposed, proving that her difficulties have not damaged, but improved her character; And damisel Freyn, so hende of mouth, / Her semblaunt and her gentrise, / Her lovesum eighen, her rode so bright (ll. 265, 268, 269). In this way, this story is incendiary in nature since it ignites a feeling of confidence in the audience who would enjoy hearing about a mistreated character like themselves, who rises from the ashes despite their limitations to prove themselves noble, and despite having nothing to their name. As much as this story would likely ignite feelings of hope amongst the audience, they are also able to relate to the voice of le Freine, which is not directly spoken to them until line 379, just before the end. In acquiring a voice only once
  • 11. Charlie Chaplin s Commentary On Society In The Film City... City Lights In the 1931 film City Lights , Charlie Chaplin opens our eyes , so to speak, about how society values trivial elements of people over the deeper person by using blindness. In this film, Chaplin brilliantly mixes lighthearted comedy with deep and complex ideas about problems with society. Chaplin uses music, gags, and a genuine love connection to portray this point in multiple ways throughout the movie. Chaplin also took the bold step of not making a talking movie, even though they were available at the time, making the details in the pictures and sounds he was creating that much more important. What makes City Lightsso special, and different from other comedies, is Chaplin s natural blend of comedic scenes with tense and serious scenes. Chaplin weaved together a masterpiece that culminates in the end with the lady seeing who she fell in love with, which is also the moment Chaplin slaps the viewer in the face with the realization that the priorities in society are misguided and that the important things cannot be seen with the eye. To see Chaplin s commentary on society, one must first look at how he uses sound to spread his message. Right from the first scene, Chaplin infuses his views on society with sound as he plays the kazoo to represent the high class men speaking when they are unveiling a new statue. During this speech, the view can see the tramp (Charlie Chaplin) behind them sleeping on top of the statue. With this scene, Chaplin is saying

The History of the Quebec Francophones and the Attempts Made to Accommodate Their Concerns The merging of two separate and distinct groups is what has given Canada its unique cultural identity. While some early politicians believed assimilation was the best approach to building a strong Canada, it became increasing difficult to convince the Quebec francophones that a national identity should take precedence over retaining their unique culture. The Inuit and the many other aboriginal groups should also be recognized as distinct, having their own unique language and, as such, have their language and culture protected and guaranteed under the constitution. While Canada has entrenched the bilingual feature of our nation, it has failed to acknowledge that first people of Canada, had languages of their own that should be recognized and protected. Linguistic duality was embedded in the British North America Act of 1867 and has had both positive and negative repercussions for Canada. Language has evoked divisive social and political tension between French speaking and English speaking Canadians. (Jackson Jackson, 1998: 230) By

In a political snafu the Reagan administration sold arms to Iran so that they could secure the release of US hostages and also generate enough money to support Contra. This became known as the Iran Contra Affair and steeply affected Reagan s popularity with the people. (Mayer, Jane and Doyle McManus) Reagan s willingness to use violence alarmed many, especially when he took up the position of the Soviet Union being purely evil. After Gorbachev became a chairman representing many soviet political parties and took on a position of negotiator, Reagan became less militant and more open to discussion, seeing Gorbachev as a good man who came out of an evil system. A significant event during this period was Reagan s speech at the berlin wall, which urged Gorbachev to bring down the wall and reunite berlin. As tensions rapidly declined the Soviets declared that they would no longer interfere in allied affairs. Domestic Policies Reagan s domestic policies focused on conservative economic values, specifically his implementation of supply side economics and large tax cuts, which thereafter were dubbed Reaganomics Which lowered tax rates, reduced regulation, limited new currency, reduced the growth of government spending. When he entered the presidency Reagan faced an extremely high rate of inflation and high interest rates which he sought to limit by making large tax cuts and curbing social spending. A Pleasurable Fabliau In The Miller s Tale The Miller s Tale: A Pleasurable Fabliau Pilgrims of the Tabard Inn, it is with great pleasure to announce that the winning of the story telling contest is The Miller. After hearing all of the tales told on our adventure, which can also be found in The Canterbury Tales, By Geoffrey Chaucer, the answer to the question, who told the best tale, seemed quite evident to me. A story consisting of good moral and great pleasure was my initial criteria, which The Miller s tale met and exceeded through several literary elements. This story does not have an overall moral, but instead, several morals found singularly within each characterbased off of their actions. The Miller successfully delivers his tale through a third person limited point of view,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead, the Miller scatters several morals throughout the story, each one applying to a different characters situation. John s moral is slightly ironic, in that it s idealogy stems from a philosopher Nicholas is studying. The Miller has already disclosed that this is not something John believes in. A Roman philosopher, Cato believed that people should not marry outside of their age range, something John did. Alison is, therfore, unfaithful. In fact, he [John] was jealous and kept close watch upon her, for she was wild and young, while he was old and thought himself likely to be cuckolded . (Chaucer, pg. 67) Because of John s overbearingness and old age, Alison is driven to cheat with a younger man. For Nicholas, however, the moral lesson he walks away with is different. When Absolon returned to where he was tricked into kissing Alison s butt, he was ready with his hot iron and he smote Nicholas in the middle of his ass (Chaucer, Pg. 79) Nicholas, being the ringleader of the events leading up to this, had his trick backfire on him. Nicholas walks away with the moral lesson that the trickster is the one who gets burned in the end. While these two morals are wholly different and the experiences leading up to them do not parallel in the slightest, the multilayered morals that The Miller dispersed in his tale truly allow for it s utter

In the early 1300s, Pierre Dubois, a French lawyer and pamphleteer during the reign of Phillip IV, advocated a unified and stronger Europe to fight papal corruption and win a Crusade. Victor Hugo, a French poet, imagined a more federal type of Europe, as a unity of nations and people, during the 1800s. However, the progression of wars between mainly Germany and France between 1870 and 1945 resulted in massive loss of life and economic deterioration, making the need for peace integral to the survival of Europe (Pascal). The Indian Reservation System An Indian Reservation is a legal territory managed by a certain Native American tribe given to them, with only partial sovereignty, by the United States government. Only 326 of the country s 567 recognized tribes were granted land, but even the land they were granted is not sufficient enough to support a sustainable lifestyle. With no rights to their land, no sense of home, and a rapidly dying culture, native americans have been dealt with in the worst ways possible after their own massacre and consistently broken treaties. An analysis of the Indian reservationsystem in the US provides deeper insight to the idea that the treatment of natives has left profound, long lasting negative impacts on the lives of native Americans. BODY PARAGRAPH NUMBER 1: (PUT IN TOPIC SENTENCE) Some officials in the early years of the American republic, such as President George Washington, believed that the best way to solve this Indian problem was simply to civilize the Native Americans. The goal of this civilization campaign was to make Native Americans as much like white Americans as possible by encouraging them convert to Christianity, learn to speak and read English, and adopt European style economic practices such as the individual ownership of land and other property (including, in some instances in the South, African slaves). Robert Walton plays an often overlooked role in this story, although he can be considered the primary narrator. Walton is the captain of a failing expedition to the North Pole who discovers a freezing and lost Victor Frankenstein. Walton nurses Frankenstein back to health, and Frankenstein tells Walton of his misfortune of a life story. The similarities between Frankenstein and Walton are made fairly obvious, as Frankenstein himself points out their somewhat similar pursuits of knowledge and failure to realize their own limits, as well as warns Walton about the consequences of taking an obsession too far, implying that Frankenstein sees a little of himself in the captain. However, I think that there is an even more interesting observation to be made of Walton, by comparing him to the monster. • 36. Progressive Prank Protection Commercial Examples The two ads I chose were the Nationwide Baby commercial and the Progressive prank protection commercial. I chose these ads because they show a practical product, that most people use, in an funny and unrelated way. The nationwide ad shows a man taking care of a baby as if it is a car. This commercial is used to promote car insurance. The progressive ad shows agents Flo and Jamie sneaking around in the night pulling off their own version of pranks: fixing mailboxes, replacing windows, and leaving paper bags with money on doorsteps. This commercial is used to promote home insurance. Nationwide and Progressive are two well known insurance companies. The first ad I will talk about is the Nationwide Baby ad. The ad starts off with a man washing his baby in his driveway the same way one would wash a car (Nationwide). The ad goes on to show car related situations with a baby like running into a fire hydrant, car repair shop, and in a grocery store parking lot. The ad shows how Nationwide will protect what s precious to you by making it precious to them. Therefore, just like a baby is precious and people will do anything to protect their baby, ... This concept can be very persuasive in attracting people who are looking for a new insurance company. Therefore, if a person is looking for an insurance company that has good service and truly cares, then the Nationwide Baby ad would be a good start of them choosing a new insurance company. For people who already are Nationwide customers can be assured that they are a part of a caring company

  • 38. A Media Analysis Of A River Runs Through It Worldview Media Analysis of the film, A River Runs Through It Our worldview is how we interpret reality and what we believe to be true. Our worldview evolves over time as our life experiences shape how we approach life. According to Ronald Nash, a biblical worldview is defined as Human beings and the universe in which they reside are the creation of God who has revealed himself in Scripture (Faith and Reason, 1988, pg. 47). When you believe the Bible is true, then it will be the foundation of everything you say and do. As I watched the movie A River Runs Through Itthe worldview that the film portrays was evident. It was easy to pick up on the worldviews of the characters. The film is about a familyliving near the Blackfoot River in Missoula, Montana, in the early 1920 s. The father is a passionate fisherman and Presbyterian minister who emphasizes in his sermons that the disciples were fishermen. The film also revolves around the ministers two sons and their love for fly fishing. They were taught the skill well by their father. Their father ties the love of God into the ability of His people to use rudimentary tools to engage in the beautiful act of fly fishing to provide food. One of the things that the father tells his sons right away in the movie was, All good things come by grace, grace comes by art, art doesn t come easy (Redford, 1992). Later in the movie after Norman had returned from college, he commented on how his brother had become an artist in his

From the beginning of the conversation, he was the target of the president s well known pressure tactics. The president informed Smithe clearly that he felt the friendship of the two companies was at stake and reciprocal considerations were in order. Smithe informed the president that his bid was the highest received, and he suggested that the president knew by approximately how much he was high. Smithe stated that normally second bids were not accepted, but because of previous friendship he would in this case accept a revised bid from General. The president s reaction was to leave the meeting in anger with the parting comment that Smithe had better think again about awarding the contract to General and fast. Mr. Smithe set aside the shaft contract during the ensuing two weeks, partly as a result of his offer to the General representatives and also because he wanted to devote time to other problems. Formed about three billion years ago, the diamond may very well be the oldest and most precious item any person can own. The internationally accepted notion that this commodity is one of the most treasurable commodity of them all has led to the public being prepared to pay the prices that are set by a group of companies in an agreement known as a cartel. This essay will evaluate the diamond market on a microeconomic level and discuss how the diamond cartel came about, what has allowed it to operate for decades, as well as how it determines the price of diamonds. In the same light, if the price varied vastly between companies, people would be able to purchase from the company that charges less, resulting in people losing their appreciation of the product. A threat to the company came about in the 1950s when diamonds were discovered in Siberia, and although these diamonds were of a somewhat inferior quality to the ones sold the company De Beers, these cheaper diamonds would lead to a decrease in the quantity of De Beers diamonds demanded. Therefore, De Beers bought up almost every diamond from Siberia, meaning that it owned the vast majority of the diamonds of the world. Price fixing and output restriction were the next step to ensure that diamonds do not lose their value to the world. The general law of demand states that the higher the price of a good, the lower the demand. However, the cartel introduced an incentive so that regardless of how high up they decide to push the price of diamonds, there would still be a great demand for them. They developed the marketing strategy of making diamonds synonymous with the idea of love and romance, an idea that is strongly valued by cultures across the globe. As a result, even to present day times, diamonds are considered the ultimate token of love, and any of the other gems of the

The best way to evade future crises and build business is not about implementing regulation to avoid fraud, but to use smarter ethics as well in order to maximize the company s integrity. However, ethical behavior must not be confused with following the law or achieve what communities suppose is acceptable or satisfactory. Social norms and laws could ride contrary to what is ethical, for instance lets think about apartheid and slavery. Ethics need to stand above and not manipulated by an individual, who might conduce these ethics into a negative side, that can lead to induce people to accept what is wrong just because the law says that. Why are ethics important in global banking? Ethics are vital to maintain a level of trust between the organization and their clients, to support the required independence and providing suitable investment advice. • 50. The Volatility of Crude Oil Prices The volatility of crude oil prices have been experienced since the end of the 20th century. The March 1999 spikes were experienced due to the restriction of crude oil production and cooperation among OPEC member states, the growth of oil demand in Asia that signified its recovery following the Asian financial crisis and decreased production from non OPECcountries (Al Abri, 2013). The world market reacted with a sharp rise in prices with the increase in crude oil going beyond 30USD /barrel in the last quarter of 2000 (Chen, Hamori and Kinkyo, 2014). OPEC countries tried to stabilize prices through the increase or reduction in production to a range of 22USD per barrel to 28USD per barrel (Ghosh and Kanjilal, 2014). The incident on September 2001 caused a deep reduction in crude oil prices, irrespective of earlier decreases in production by exporters that are non OPEC and quota reduction by OPEC countries. After a short while, prices rose to 25USD per barrel with prices going beyond this in 2004 to about 40USD per barrel (Jimenez Rodriguez, 2011). Factors linked to the rise in the price of oil include the continuous fall in the value of USD and subsequent Middle East tensions, China s increased demand for crude oil and the uncertainty of Russian s producer, Yukos (Chuku, 2012). The 2008 banking crisis, which was a consequence of the financial crisis, reinforced significantly the cyclical downturn. After the insolvency of numerous financial institutions and banks in the US,
  • 51. Mortality In Raymond Chandler s The Big Sleep Raymond Chandler, author of the novel the The Big Sleep , was able to obtain the title of his book by how he used the characters to give a comprehensive plot. The title of this novel was a metaphor to speak about death in a more light way and to have a deeper meaning to it as the characters shown in the novel. The question of mortality is seen on every page of this novel, the title itself means death as it talks about a prolonged, deep, almost unending slumber. It alludes to rumination in the last pages of the book about resting the big sleep. You were dead, you were sleeping the big sleep, you were not bothered by things like that, oil and water were the same as wind and air to you. You just slept the big sleep, not caring about the nastiness of how you died or where you fell (230). When we look at the whole novel, we can see that there are series of death cases, and there is a hidden plan, which leaves the characters in this story to have a different perspective about death. Chandler has created a nice story line that shows how the community of Los Angeles handles or defines mortality. 1930s Los Angeles with its killers and blackmailers is fundamentally a city of doubt, where every ...
