Antonio Lopez was a Puerto Rican fashion illustrator born in 1943 who gained recognition for his illustrations in major fashion magazines in the 1960s and 1970s. He discovered and promoted many up-and-coming fashion models. Lopez used various media for his illustrations including watercolor, ink, pencil and charcoal. He was adept at using different materials together to create unique blended works of art.

Antonio Lopez was a fashion illustrator, born in
Utuado, Puerto Rico on February 11th, 1943. His family
migrated to New York when he was seven years old. He
went to school there where he gained the friendship and
admiration of other children as well as teachers because
of his talent. He was awarded a scholarship to the
Traphagen School of Fashion, at the age of twelve.
“Lopez was encouraged to attend the High School of Art
and Design by his junior high school art teacher and
the Fashion Institute of technology while attending the
F.I.T. he began an internship at Women’s Wear
Daily which led to him leaving school and working at the
publication. Shortly afterward he left for a position at the
New York Times”
In the early 1960, Lopez started to work for fashion
magazine such as Vogue, Bazaar and Elle. He also did
illustrations of Fashion Design by Charles James.
“In 1969 Lopez moved to Paris along with Ramos and was
an associate of Karl Lagerfeld; he stayed there until the
mid-1970s. Antonio discovered Jessica Lange in 1974. He
discovered Jerry Hall and lived with her in Paris at the
beginning of her modelling career. Lopez and Ramos also
discovered Grace Jones and Tina Chow.”

This is the one of fashion Illustration by Antonio
Lopez. In this drawing, he used mainly
watercolors because you can see the brush
stroke in the drawing. Also you can see the paint
are kind of transparent and look wet. Also he
painted light to dark because adding light colors
later can be difficult in watercolors. He used
yellow color to bring out the drawing and used
dark brown color for shadowing.
I was impressed by this drawing as watercolors
are very fast to dry and harder to layer on top of
the other paint and also harder to fix mistakes
when it’s dry

In this drawing I think Antonio used water
colour, charcoal and pencil because some of the
paint, you can see through and they look watery
and also you can see the brush stroke in the
painting. I think he sketched the figure with
pencil before painting as you can see the outline
in the drawing and some of them are really thin
and clean line. There are lines in the drawing and
some are short and some are long and they are
pretty dark and they look like they were drew by
charcoal to me. I really like this painting as he
used three different materials and he knows how
to use and where they put. It looks a bit kind of
messy but it made the painting more unique.

Another one of Antonio Lopez’s painting. In this
painting he used only charcoal as the colour is
pretty dark that you can’t make by pencil or pen
and the painting is a bit rough and sketchy look.
Also the lines are really black and heavy as
charcoals are used to make bold finished
drawing and to create shadows and heavy
shading. The figure in the painting is proportional
and the strokes are clean and perfect as
charcoal are really difficult to draw as they are
easily spread by the touch of the hand. I
influence by this drawing as charcoal is easy to
pick up, but very hard to master.

This painting is called Fashion Girl (a.k.a) Woman
with hat or Stylish Lady. In this painting Antonio
used watercolour as the painting is really bright
and colourful.
Some people say that watercolour art is a very
powerful way to express your feelings in
particular; watercolour can be effectively used
to represent the artistic vision on a piece of
paper. “Watercolour paintings are considered a
unique way to creatively represent
dreams, illusions, emotion, and bright feelings
using water-soluble pigments.” I think Antonio
used this painting to express his feeling as
women are become stylish and fashionable.

This is also one of the paintings from Antonio
Lopez. I think this is a combination of ink and
watercolour as the colour look wet and lively.
The colour on the hair is a bit more watery and
transparent so I think it’s the watercolour. I think
the black paint is an Ink as ink is an incredibly
versatile medium.
When you are painting with ink, you can create
many of the same strokes, textures and shapes
that you can create with coloured paint. But
because ink is restricted in tone, you can only be
creating works in black, white and grey.

Another one of Antonio Lopez’s painting. In this
painting I also think this is the combination of
pencil and charcoal as this one look like a rough
sketch but very neat one. I think first he used
pencil to sketch a face and then he started to
shade it. After that he drew proper
eyes, eyebrow, nose and mouth. Then he tops it
with the charcoal. I like this picture as I
personally like the pencil drawing because it’s
easy to draw than any other paint and the
mistakes will be easily erase by rubber.
