David Keys Catastrophe
In his book Catastrophe: An Investigation Into the Origins of the Modern World, David Keys states
that a volcano that later became Krakatoa erupted in 535 A.D, and that the ash kicked up into the
atmosphere by the eruption caused a climate crisis that ultimately had massive geopolitical and
religious consequences. Keys attributes more or less everything that happened in the sixth century to
this climate crisis. Many of his points are quite convincing, but some of his most crucial points are not
well substantiated. This weakens both Keys conclusion and the book as a whole. Ultimately,
Catastrophe has many subpar arguments among a few good ones.
Keys starts off the book by arguing that the plague epidemic in the 6th century came from the climate

The navigation structure of the site is broken into blocks and is very clear. Being broken up this way
makes it easy to see the different sections instead of everything blending together without clear
dividers. The only criticism would be that there seems to be a great deal of links, which could cause
viewers to feel overwhelmed by the options. The navigation bar banner and the side navigation bar are
strongly apparent on each page making it easy to go back and forth between pages. The back to home
button sits under the Ducks Unlimited logo in the top left hand corner of the page, but it does not stand
out. It should be more prominent on the page or highlighted better so the user can see how to get back
to the home page from any page within the site.
The site does include the basic document elements of who, what, when and where and these elements
are very helpful. Having current news releases and content that is dated helps the site remain relevant

During the latter half of the nineteenth century, Minnesota was rampant with political discontent
(MNopedia). National movements called for shorter work days, restrictions on child labor, as well and

Abolitionist movements began to arise in the North and this did not delight the Southern slaveholders.
Slavery was encouraged by Hinton R. Helper in this publishing of Impending Crisis of the South. But
it didn t create a lasting effect for emancipation was dropped. Due to this, stricter slave laws were
placed as many slaves attempted to rebel such as Prosser and Vesey. Their differences on social issues
were the main cause of why the civil was even erupted. With the inauguration of Jefferson As
President, it seemed as political issues in the new republic were not going to be that much of an issue.
This political tranquility did not last the first 60 years of the 1800s. As the era of good feelings came
to the end with the Whig party, the two party system, had returned to the United States. This
development created further separation between the South and North as one party was dominant in
one region and a different one in the other. As this separation was created, it helped create the
inevitable was between the North and South. The only noticeable political similarity would be their
Southern Code of Honor system and Northern character . It both represented that they each strived for
living a specific way of life. The differences far outweigh their similarities and the economical, social,
and political issues all contributed to the divergence of the North and South. What had started as a
