Antarctica is Earth's southernmost continent located in the Antarctic region, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice that averages at least 1.6 kilometers thick. It is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent with no permanent human residents, though research stations are home to 1,000-5,000 people seasonally. Temperatures range from -80 to -90 degrees Celsius in the interior in winter and 5 to 15 degrees Celsius near the coast in summer.

If you are considering a trip to Antarctica, you should choose this one, as by simply joining this Journey to Antarctica you will help us raise much needed funds to support the McGrath Foundation’s mission to place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities right across Australia and to increase breast awareness in young Australians. Proceeds from berth sales on this voyage will directly benefit the McGrath Foundation.
Facts, environment, tourism, resource and the treaty, all about Antarctica. A comprehensive description of the environmental component of the white continent. Can be taught from Year 9 to Year 13, in Geography, Social Studies, Global Perspectives or Environmental Science. Subject taught in Geography Year 9 at Pukekohe Christian School by the geography teacher Mr. Dumitrache. PCS is a Cambridge school from Auckland, New Zealand. Please send me a message if you want to download this Power Point presentation for educational purposes.
Todd Latham joined Robert Swan and an international group of people on an expedition to Antarctica in March 2011. Part of the 2041.com effort to educate the world about climate change, renewable energy and the future of the planet's last untouched wilderness - Antarctica.

The Antarctica is centered asymmetrically around the South Pole. It is the southernmost continent in world. The 66 degree 34 minutes south latitude forms the outermost boundary of the Antarctic circle. The area covered within this circle is called as the Antarctic Continent. It includes parts of the Southern ocean, surrounding seas, ice shelves, continental glaciers, plateaus and mountain ranges. The Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent, possessing many unique features to learn.
Tundra is the coldest of all the biomes. Tundra comes from the Finnish word tunturia, meaning treeless plain. It is noted for its frost-molded landscapes, extremely low temperatures, little precipitation, poor nutrients, and short growing seasons. Dead organic material functions as a nutrient pool. The two major nutrients are nitrogen and phosphorus. Nitrogen is created by biological fixation, and phosphorus is created by precipitation. Tundra is separated into two types: arctic tundra and alpine tundra.
Characteristics of Tundra
Extremely cold climate
Low biotic diversity
Simple vegetation structure
Limitation of drainage
Short season of growth and reproduction
Energy and nutrients in the form of dead organic material
Large population oscillations

2. Antarctica is Earth's southernmost continent, underlying the South Pole. It is situated in the Antarctica region of the southern hemisphere, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice, which averages at least 1.6 kilometres (1.0 mi) in thickness. Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent, and has the highest average elevation of all the continents. Antarctica is considered a desert, with annual precipitation of only 200 mm (8 inches) along the coast and far less inland. There are no permanent human residents but anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 people reside throughout the year at the research stations scattered across the continent. Only cold-adapted plants and animals survive there, including penguins, seals, mosses, lichen, and many types of algae.
