Antarctica is Earth's southernmost continent, located almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by a thick layer of ice averaging 1.6 kilometers thick. It is the coldest, driest, and windiest place on Earth, with temperatures ranging from -80 to -90 degrees Celsius in winter and 5 to 15 degrees Celsius near the coast in summer. While no one permanently lives there, research stations house up to 5,000 people at different times of year to study the unique climate and wildlife, which has adapted to the harsh conditions.
