In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
role of women and girls in various terror groupssadiakorobi2
Women have three distinct types of involvement: direct involvement in terrorist acts; enabling of others to commit such acts; and facilitating the disengagement of others from violent or extremist groups.
2. The magazine top of the pops is aimed
at young girls, this is shown by the
bright pink colours.
The glitter on the mast head suggests
that the magazine is targeted at young
girls.
There are pictures of Justin Bieber and
Harry Styles with the title “Who’s the
Fittest”. This implies that the audience
would think that either Justin or Harry
are fit.
The puff reads “Get summer’s hottest
trend now!” This connotes that the
readers of this magazine will be into
fashion.
£2.99 is a cheap price this suggests
that this is the price range for the
target audience.
The font has swirls at the end of the
letter, this shows the reader that the
magazine is feminine and aimed at
girls.
The colour scheme is pink’s purples'
and whites, this reflects the interests
and the feminine attitude of the target
audience
The main image is of Jessie J who is a
well known singer, this attracts the
young female audience. She has a
direct mode of address which engages
the target audience.
3. • Subscription Advertisement is displayed at
the top, this is done because companies
want to advertise their product to
audiences they think will be interested in it.
Therefore having the BBC at the top next to
an advertisement of a popular show (Glee),
targets the audience of young girls who
would be likely to watch the show.
• Price Line is displayed at the bottom of the
magazine on the right. This is the last place
the readers eye will rest. This is done so
that hopefully the reader has already seen
an article they are very interested in and
will want to buy the magazine.
• The Date Line is displayed at the bottom of
the magazine on the right. The date line is
not something that would persuade a
customer to buy the magazine however it
still needs to be displayed on the cover.
Therefore it is put at the bottom, so that it
does not distract from the rest of the cover.
• Barcode is also at the bottom of the
magazine for similar reasons to the Date
Line. The barcode is needed on the
magazine however it’s not something that
would ever attract a buyer to get the
magazine and magazine company don’t
want it to take away from the cover.
4. The puff reads “WIN! Signed LTD
edition Stone Roses artwork”. This
suggest that the target audience for
the magazine is mid twenties and
older men.
There is a gold, red and white colour
scheme. This is quite manly, which
reflects the magazines target audience
of mid twenties and older men.
The writing Is block letters, the isn’t a
fancy font. The suggests that this is not
a feminine magazine.
The left third of the magazine contains
the main articles that would attract
the main target audience. For example
the main cover line “Julian goes solo”
would attract the twenties to older
men target audience.
The main image is of Julian
Casablancas, he is the lead singer in
the band “The Strokes” who feature as
the main article. Therefore anyone
who is a fan of the band will be
encouraged to buy the magazine.
5. The quote from the main article artist is
confrontational and invites the reader to
want it find out more about the artists.
The other artist s listed on the front
cover are artists that should potentially
attract more readers to the magazine.
The “World Exclusive” implies that you
can only read about this in NME which
encourages the reader to buy the
magazine.
The message “Arctic Monkeys Live In NY”
suggest that the magazine has news and
information about the Arctic Monkeys
new show which would engage the
target audience for this magazine,
6. • The writing is has a slight curve to it, this gives
the impressions of being trendy.
• There is a red white and black colour scheme, it is
very sophisticated which is used to target a
specific audience of mid teens- twenties that
consider themselves “cool”.
• T.I is wearing a suit, hat and trendy glasses, this is
reflected in the sophisticated nature of the front
cover. People that want to read about “trendy” T.I
will want to read a “trendy” magazine.
• The cover does not have many articles showing, it
has a very fresh and organised cover. This again
reflects the sophisticated young and trendy cover.
• The front cover lists Artists that should appeal to
the type of audience that would want a cool,
sophisticated magazine. Artists themselves that
would be described as “cool”. For example 50
Cent, Prince and Jay Z.
• The Artists listed on the front cover also appeal to
more than one generation of music, for example
Prince who was very successful in the 80’s and
then Jay Z who is a very popular rap artist now.
This engages more than one target audience
which will result in increased sales.
