1. Pros and cons of print magazines
Pros cons
• Don’t have to wait for an
article to download
• physical presence
• It’s portable
• Not everyone is online
• Not eco friendly
• Some shops may not sell
the magazine
• Can be lost or broken
• Is able to reach all types
of people
2. The masthead of this magazine doesn't exactly
stand out from the rest of the front cover as it
follows the same colour scheme and blends in,
however it doesn't’t need to stand out as the
magazine is already widely recognised. The same
font and colour is used in every issue to make it
memorable for the audience, this is effective
because it is easy to spot a Q magazine since the
masthead never changes leading to more people
purchasing it, it also presents reliability in the
magazine as the audience know they are getting the
same quality every time they buy it.
The Dominant image of this is magazine is a mid shot of the
musician ’Liam Gallagher’, this has been done to make the
image eye level with the audience which is directly
addressing them, urging them to purchase the magazine as
they feel connected to the artist. The image takes up a large
majority of the cover, portraying the importance and influence
of the artist, this can once again be backed up by the image
of the artist overlapping the masthead, this is effective as the
image can be easily seen, since the artist is so widely
followed and recognizable, the target audience are more
likely to spot this image of one of their favourite artists,
leading them to buy the magazine. The image has been
made black and white, this is because it is a older photo of
the artist, giving the older target audience a nostalgic feel, it
will also make the younger audience feel like they are holding
a piece of history.
The Tagline at the top of the masthead say’s The
world’s greatest music magazine’ , once again this
instils a high grade magazine into the audience, this
is effective as it makes fans of music believe that
this is the only magazine they need leading to more
people buying ‘Q’ than any other music magazine.
There is a Pull quote on the cover from the artist
Liam Gallagher, this intrigues the audience by
making them curious as to what the quote is about
since no context has been given on the cover, this is
effective in selling more copies of the magazine as
people will buy it to read these interviews of their
favourite artist, in this case Liam Gallagher.
The sell-lines of the magazine include a number of large,
influential names from a variety of different music genres.
With the conventions of a rock music magazine elsewhere
on the magazine, it is juxtaposed with names like ‘Sam
smith’ who are pop music artists, this attracts people who
are fans of pop music as well as rock music fans. Fans of
pop music are generally a younger audience and are more
likely to be female. This is effective in selling more copies
of the magazine and informing fans of pop music about
what is going on in with artists in that genre.
The Barcode is very important to the magazine, it
includes the price of the magazine and the date in
which it was issued. The barcode must also be
scanned to enable the audience to actually
purchase it.
The colour scheme used on this cover is mainly red and
white with a small bit of blue, these colours are usually
associated with the ‘mod’ scene. This scheme follows the
conventions of the cover as the artists in the dominant
image is one of the biggest ‘brit pop’ stars to ever live, this
genre of music is heavily followed by people of the ‘mod’
scene meaning this colour scheme is effective in attracting
a wider target audience.
3. The Target audience for this magazine is male and
female as it is gender neutral but it will be mostly
males who are appealed by it, this is because the
content of the magazine is mostly rock bands which
are male dominated and usually followed more by
men. The age of the audience could range from 15-40
with both old and new musical artists being written
about. The social grade of the target audience will be
from C1 to E grade since such a wide spectrum of
people have strong interests in music, both old and
young, skilled or not. They will also be reformers and
mainstreamers.
The Purpose of the magazine will be to inform and
entertain their audience. It informs the audience by
giving information on things such as upcoming albums
and singles and when they will be releasing, Also
included in the magazine are reviews of recent gigs
and newly released albums by music experts, they
also notify the audience when a musician is going on
tour and when and where they will be touring. The
magazine entertains the audience by including things
like interviews with big stars, free posters and
competitions where you can win things such as a
’fender 60th anniversary commemorative Stratocaster
worth £1499’, this gives the target audience a further
incentive to buy the magazine as they may want to
decorate their room with the free posters they receive,
read an exclusive interview with their favourite star or
win the very valuable prizes.
The Distribution channels for the magazine will be
any participating local newsagent or supermarket that
has the magazine in stock
4. The article begins with a Drop capital, this is a convention of a normal magazine
as they are used quite frequently to start the paragraph and signify to the audience
where to begin reading. This is effective in making the magazine look professional
portraying high quality to the audience. A Column gutter is used to separate the
Bodies of text, this layout is effective in making the article easier to read and
adding to the professional feel the magazine gives to the audience.
In the bottom corners of the double page spread is Folio, this is the number of the
page and the date the magazine was issued, this is a convention of a typical double
page spread as almost all magazines use them.
The whole right page of this double spread is taken up by the Main image of the
artist, this indicates to the audience that this article is solely about Kid Cudi, this
also signifies to the audience the artists importance and influence in music,
specifically rap and hip-hop. A mid shot of the artist has been used, making kid Cudi
eye level with the audience, giving both the artist and the audience a connection.
The artist is giving the middle finger to the audience with a raised eyebrow which
portrays him as rebellious and that he is able to do what he wants, this targets a
teenage audience, from the ages of 16-25, who generally are more rebellious than
older people. This could once again show the artists importance as he believes he
can’t be touched. Another thing to point out is that the image of kid Cudi stands out
from the dark, black background, this represents him standing out from anyone else
like him and emerging from the shadows into the spotlight.
The Purpose of this double page spread will be to inform the readers of Q
magazine who Kid Cudi is as it says he is ‘New to Q’, it also informs the reader on
his new album and where to find it.
5. Pros and cons of digital magazines
Pros cons
• Much cheaper than printing.
• Digital distribution costs are a
fraction of conventional media
distribution.
• Worldwide
• Huge advertising potential
• video, sound and interactive
links
• email direct to your target
audience
• Can be hard to read;
requires zooming in and out
• Not everyone has access to
the internet or knows how
to use it
• Some people prefer
something they can hold
6. The Masthead of this magazine challenges the
conventions of a normal magazine cover. Usually the
masthead will stand out from everything else and
attempt to get the audiences attention whereas on
this cover it has been covered by the words ‘definitely
maybe’ which is the name of the debut and iconic
album by the band oasis. This is effective in drawing
in a certain target audience, which would be fans of
the band oasis who are generally males from the
ages of 15-40 as the masthead is usually the most
important thing on a magazine cover and on this one,
it is covered, showing that this issue will be full of
content for oasis fans, it also shows the size and
power of the band as they are able to cover the
masthead and make the front cover all about them.
Since the conventions of magazines is challenged
here it may also portray the bands rebellious nature.
The Dominant image of this magazine cover is an outtake
from the cover of the oasis’ debut album. The image takes up
almost all of the front cover, once again signifying how big and
influential Oasis are. This will appeal to fans of oasis as the
image will draw their attention as at first glance they will think it
is just an oasis album, when they inspect it further they will see
that it is a magazine about oasis’ 25th anniversary which they
will most likely proceed to read. This challenges conventions
as usually studio photoshoots are used for the image on the
cover, whereas on this one they have used an album cover,
this gives the feel of a collectors item to the audience which
will really appeal to fans of oasis.
The Sell lines of this cover challenge the
conventions of a normal magazine cover. Usually,
sell lines are placed on the sides of the front cover,
however on this one they are placed at the bottom.
This once again represents how large and influential
this band is as all the sell lines aren’t covering the
dominant image. The sell lines themselves contain
names of artists who are of a different genre to the
band oasis, names like ‘Freddie Gibbs’ who is quite
big in the hip-hop scene, this is effective in drawing
in a larger audience and selling more magazines as
people who are interested in rap and not rock music
may also purchase the magazine.
The Distribution channels for digital magazines is
online through the publishers website, in this case
www.qthemusic.com
A Plug has been used which entails all of the content about
oasis that will be inside the magazine. Buzzwords like ‘unseen’
photos and ‘revelatory’ secrets have been placed on the cover,
this is effective in grabbing the interest of the audience and
making the audience want to purchase the magazine to find
out this oasis information which is portrayed as exclusive to Q
magazine. The plug is the only thing that has been placed over
the dominant image, this will show that the articles included in
the magazine about oasis will be of very high quality and will
appeal to the target audience of 15-40 year old males.
The Purpose of the magazine will be to entertain and Inform
music fans, mostly fans of oasis as this cover leads me to
believe that this is a special edition that will pay homage to the
band oasis as it states on the cover that this is their ‘25th
anniversary fiesta’
The social grade of the target audience will be from C1 to E
grade since such a wide spectrum of people have strong
interests in music, both old and young, skilled or not. They will
also be reformers and mainstreamers.
7. This double page spread begins with a Drop capital, following the conventions
of a typical magazine, this makes the spread look professional and makes it
easier for the audience to read as there is a lot of text on this page.
The layout of this double page spread is questions and answers from the band
‘Idles’. The questions are in a Subhead in bold, this is to make it easier for the
audience to read and separates the questions from the answers.
The pull quote sets the tone for this Q&A, it says ‘I'm going to be an abrasive
c**t now and again’. This shows that the target audience will be an older one
with people above the age of 15 as that type of profanity wouldn’t be used with
a younger audience. It also makes the article more personal as the colloquial
language used will feel more genuine to the people reading it as the audience
will be a C1 to E grade, this effective in connecting to the reader making them
want to read more and overall buy more magazines.
The Main image shows the band looking at pieces of paper which is
presumably the questions they have received. The expressions on their faces
show them to be confused and startled by what they are reading, this will tell
the audience that their burning questions are being asked and not just boring
mundane ones. This interests the reader as they must read the Q&A to find
out why the band is so taken back by the questions they have received.
The Purpose of this double page spread will be to inform the audience since
this segment is all about questions and answers from the band. This will be
effective in selling copies of the magazine as this Q&A is exclusive to Q
magazine and people will want to hear what the band had to say.
