Competency #4:Students will utilize a variety of reading strategies in order to deconstruct a piece of literature.

As you read Night, independently…you will be annotating the text to show your interaction with
          it and further comprehension.

BENEFITS OF ANNOTATINGfor all you non-believers – as much as you may complain
about annotating, there is good reason why we crazy teachers have you do it:

                    1) It will help you see reading as process
                    2) It will deepen your comprehension of a text, especially a difficult one.
                    3) It will slow down your reading which will help you discover ideas that you may not
                       have uncovered otherwise.
                    4) It makes you a more active reader, and therefore a better reader – helping prepare you
for reading college texts where you won’t have as much help in class. You will
already have habits formed that will help you in reading the text alone and discussing
the text in class with your professor and peers.

WHAT IS ANNOTATING? Annotating is reflecting on what you read. You have TWO options for
HOW you will annotate Night since it is not your copy of the book.

          Option #1: Sticky Notes
You can place sticky notes on the pages with you notes regarding various passages. Make sure you label
your annotations as to what kind of thought you are having (see below for options).

          Option #2: Two Column Chart
Make sure to label your interpretation so I know and you know what kind of thought you are having (see
          below for options).

                    Information Interpretation

No matter which option you choose, the following are things you may comment on:

          >Summarize – Read a passage and make a note about what it means in your own words.
          >Make predictions – based on what you read, make a note about what you think will happen
          >Formulate opinions – make a note about on opinion you have about something you’ve read.
          >Make connections – text to world, text to self, text to text
          >Ask questions – about something you don’t understand, or something about a character or author’s choice
          >Analyze the author’s craft – make a note about why you think the author presents things the way he or she chooses
          >Write reflections/reactions/comments – basic commentary
          >Look for patterns/repetitions – comment on themes or motifs you notice.

You need to have Night read and annotated by Tuesday January 15th, 2013!!!!
Mark your calendars – that’s when we begin discussion.
