During the Gupta period, large areas of land were donated to Jain saints, Buddhist monks, and Brahmanas. Brahmins and officials had the right to exchange land and make farmers work their land, though the farmers had no rights over the land. This led to increased agricultural production but miserable lives for farmers. The decline of the Gupta empire weakened royal power and concentrated it in the hands of landlords, while discrimination based on the varna system became more rigid. Significant developments occurred in literature and science, with many books written in Sanskrit by writers like Kalidasa, Vishakhadatta, and Varahamihira.
