At the onset of COVID 19,
Capgemini was engaged in a digital
transformation project for a large
German automotive financial
services giant.
The customer portal and helpdesk
application were being migrated to
AWS cloud. Some idea of scale –
10,000+ active customers
300 Mn+ Euro worth of loans
6 Business Critical Modules
1800 employees worldwide
Integrations with Magento, IBM
Sterling, SFDC, Email, SMS and
many more..
Timelines – 8 months of migration
followed by 4 months of testing

The Challenges
Customer Management
Client confidence was shaken. Ability
to deliver fully remotely was not
tested. GDPR compliance and data
security was a concern
Delivery Enablement
Most developers, testers,
administrators did not even have a
laptop. Connectivity was a concern
even as the lockdown forced a freeze
on being able to subscribe to services.
Remote Work Management
Lack of right tools for security,
communication, productivity
management.
Onboarding new resources without
F2F interactions were unheard of.

Financial data had to be secured and
special projects taken up for that
purpose.

Remote working productivity was unknown. Sprint velocity,
resource utilization were all facing a big shake-up
Sprint backlog was increased to ensure people did not have much distractions
Regular communication, increased stand up meetings were encouraged
Self policing teams eliminated unnecessary roles in teams (tester when not needed)
Customers opted to either put on hold or altogether drop
upcoming projects, product increments and new initiatives
Emphasized greater business sponsor, end-user interactions with the Teams
Increased customer engagement through senior leadership level dialogs
Virtual tours, investments in innovation, and automation to convince customers
Compliance with contractual obligations, data security, IP
rights management were uncertain
Tools such as secure VPN, Microsoft Intune etc. to ensure compliance
GDPR compliance were achieved by moving tasks with live data access to EU
and masking/pseudonymization of data for offshore access
With rising COVID, employee well-being was a huge concern
Shadow resources for critical positions – project manager and above
Travel was restricted to the most necessary even after easing of flight
restrictions
Increased utilization of bench strength and young professionals

Lest We Forget
Have a keen eye for all enablers in the ecosystem, appreciate the
value they bring and understand risks deeply
Business As Usual should not be taken for granted
Ask yourself what delivers value? Is it time spent on collaborating
with customers and colleagues or is it commuting to office? Is it
elaborate planning or delivering incremental features?
Reprioritize regular activities to focus on what delivers
value to stakeholders
At the center of everything we deliver are the people – services by the
people, of the people and by the people. Taking care of your employees
will allow them to take care of your customers.
People matter – Results count
Ensure you use all tools available that allows you to deliver maximum value. Be it productivity
or security, front-end or back-end
Invest for tomorrow – Digital Technologies, Training, Tools and Processes
