WHAT INDEED IS IT?
A multi-disciplinary field
which integrates
anatomy, robots,
mechatronics, and
puppetry resulting in
lifelike animation.
Animatronics refers to the use of robotic devices to emulate a
human or an animal, or bring lifelike characteristics to an
otherwise inanimate object.
Animatronic is a mechanized puppet.
o It may be preprogrammed or remotely controlled.
o The animatronic may only perform a limited range of
movements or it may be incredibly versatile.

Animatronic
creations include
animals (including
dinosaurs), plants
and even mythical
creatures.
A robot designed
to be a convincing
imitation of a
human is more
specifically
labelled as an
android.
Modern animatronics
have found
widespread
applications in movie
special effects and
theme parks and have
been primarily used as
a spectacle of
amusement.
Figures are covered
with body shells and
flexible skins made of
plastic materials, and
finished with details
like colors, hair and
feathers and other
components to make
the figure more realistic.
Animatronic figures are
often powered by
pneumatics, hydraulics,
or by electrical means,
and can be
implemented using
both computer control
and human control.

The History Of
Animatronics
01 02
Advanced mechanical
clocks were built in
Europe which
featured animated
characters.
The 3rd and 5th
century BC, Chinese
inventors had designed
artificial wooden birds
(ma yuan) that could
fly.
The father of medieval
architecture, Leonardo da
Vinci designed and built the
Automata Lion, one of the
earliest described
animatrons in history.

Purpose of Animatronics
• To replace live animals in
films by animatronics to
reduce the risk of getting hurt
in some action sequences.
• Some toys are created using
animatronic methodology,
which are life like and are
programmed to respond like a
real living animal.
• For making films of
bizarre and extinct animals
like dinosaurs and
monsters in horror movies.

AUDIO ANIMATRONICS BY DISNEY
The term Audio-Animatronics was
coined by Walt Disney when he
started developing animatronics for
entertainment and film.
Autonomatronics, was also defined
by Walt Disney Imagineers, to
describe a more advanced audio-
animatronic technology featuring
Cameras and complex sensors to
process information around the
characters environment and respond
to that stimulus
