Animals are classified into groups based on shared characteristics. The main groups are mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and insects. Mammals give birth to live young and are warm-blooded, while birds lay eggs and have feathers, and reptiles have dry scaly skin and are cold-blooded. Amphibians can live on land and water and lay eggs, fish only live in water and breathe through gills, and insects have a three-part body and six legs.
