I feel that everything was discussed in a rush that it really did not give the
commissioner s time to really think the issues that were discussed through. The
commissioner meetings have an agenda that must be followed and lets them be
aware of all the subjects that need to be discussed. I know this meeting was being
rushed because there was one time that they even accidently skipped one subject and
had to go back to it. I was told that usually commissioner meetings are usually two
hours long and this meeting was only one hour and eighteen minutes long. I must

Race is highlighted as playing a significant role in the power held by the white
people and denied to blacks. Whites are valued over blacks. Race determines one s
fate. Throughout the story, the protagonist dreams of winning a thirty six dollar
bingo game in order to save his sick wife. However, the story illustrates that
because of the power and social dominance of the whites, there is no way that the
protagonist can escape the hopeless situation he is in. A similar standpoint was
stated by Anne Marie Hacht. The black protagonist of Ellison s story dreams of
finding success, even if it only means winning a thirty six dollar bingo jackpot. Yet
his ambition is largely a dream that he has little hope of realizing (Hacht 2). We get
the first glimpse of the hopelessness he feels when he is watching the movie and
says, But they had it all fixed. Everything was fixed (Ellison 252). This realization
reflects his feelings of not being able to succeed in a society controlled by whites.
This feeling of powerlessness is manifested in a dream that he has in which he is
running from a train down south, and just when he thinks he could escape it, people
look down on him following him right down the middle of the street, and all the
white people laughing as he ran screaming (Ellison 252). This reflects the desperation
that black people feel. Despite the protagonist s insistence that anybody can win , he
cannot because he is constantly under the heat and glare of the white light from the
projector. This institutionalization of racism is evident in the way other people
respond to the protagonist. A critic that shares this same belief is Troy A. Urquhart,
who claims that Ellison s King of the Bingo Game is about a pattern of naming that
reinforces the hierarchy which values whiteness over blackness and suggests that the

Discrimination against the Jews started immediately after the Nazi seized power
in Germany on January 30, 1933. Hitler had a vision for Germany that they
belonged to Aryan master race. Hitler also believed the Jews were interfering with
that vision. Hitler s discrimination against Jews began April 7, 1933, with a law
passed stating Jewish member couldn t practice their religion. The Nazi regime
began pushing out Jews from the country voluntarily with violence. Jewish
businesses were attacked and denied access to markets and advertisements. On
September 1935 Nuremberg Laws, which prohibited Jews and Germans to be
married, was put into effect. The Reich citizenship law stated that those of Germanic
or relative blood were defined as citizens which means Germans were striped of their

Eric Larson in his novel the Devil in the White City masterfully exercises several
rhetorical devices and storytelling strategies. The story itself centers on the Chicago

The intrepid architect who pulled it all together and against all odds puts on a
fantastical fair the likes of which will never be seen again. The other a prolific
serial killer who used the chaos of the fair to catch, kill, and dispose of victims with
great facility. To tell these stories Larson employs a varieties of techniques to convey
his tales in the way he envisioned. In particular he seems to draw heavily on
nonlinear narrativetechniques. Larson routinely jumps from the present, to the past, to
Larson s present, and back to present. He exercises these techniques as a means of
engaging his audience and to entertain his readers.
Larson manipulates nonlinear narrative techniques to keep readers engaged
throughout the novel. The whole prologue of the novel is an excellent example of
the use of nonlinear narrative structure to hook the reader and have them continue the
novel. The prologue, as it becomes evident in the epilogue, describes Burnham s boat
ride on the Olympia after all the events of the novel have transpired (Larson, 5). In
