Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) work by blocking the angiotensin II type 1 receptor and include candersartan, olmesartan, telmisartan, eprosartan, and irbesartan. ARBs are more selective than ACE inhibitors and don't cause dry cough as they don't affect bradykinin metabolism. ARBs have been shown to significantly reduce the progression of nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and kidney disease. Potential side effects include hyperkalemia, renal insufficiency, and orthostatic hypotension.
